  • Refereed, Energies, MDPI AG, Investigation of the Visual Environment of Railway Station Stairs Using Qualitative and Quantitative Evaluation Methods, Jaeyoung Heo; Miki Kozaki; Takaaki Koga; Kotaroh Hirate; Hyun Bae Kim, A qualitative evaluation was performed by comprehensively considering the lighting environment of each staircase of 20 railway stations in Tokyo, the width of the stairs, the type of ceiling, wall lighting fixtures, and the color. As a result of the quantitative evaluation of 20 stairs, it was found that a difference of up to 400 lx occurred in the measurement results of the entrance, exit, and middle landing, even for the same stairs. As a result of qualitative evaluation, it was found that the quantitative evaluation result and the simple proportional relationship were not established. It was found that simply physically brightening a space cannot make a comfortable and safe space, and in some cases, glare is likely to occur. As a result of the analysis of variance and correlation analysis, it was found that the characteristics of the space, especially the material of the wall and the location of the lighting equipment, had a large effect on the impression of the space. As a result of simulation analysis, it was found that the performance varied greatly depending on the installation location of the lighting. In particular, the method of installing the line light source close to the ground was effective. In designing stair lighting for public facilities in the future, it is considered that qualitative factors such as the finishing of walls and ceilings, installation positions, and angles of lighting fixtures, which are environmental components other than lighting, should also be considered., Sep. 2022, 15, 19, 7013, 7013, Scientific journal, 10.3390/en15197013

  • Refereed, Applied Sciences, MDPI AG, A Study on the Comparison of Impressions of Tourist Information Signs Focusing on the Differences between National Languages in Japanese Regional Cities, Kei Suzuki; Jaeyoung Heo, From the perspective of universal design, signs should be easy to understand for all users. In Japan, tourist information signs have become increasingly multilingual in recent years as the number of tourists from other countries has increased. However, it is not clear whether the current signs are comprehensible to both Japanese and non-Japanese speakers. In this study, field and questionnaire surveys on signs were conducted in Matsue City, a regional city in Japan, and the evaluations of Japanese and non-Japanese speakers were compared. In the field survey, a caption evaluation method was used to evaluate the visual environment, and in the questionnaire survey, the SD method was used to evaluate the signs obtained in the field survey. The results indicated that non-Japanese speakers were more likely to focus on signs, and signs with diagrams and maps were evaluated more positively. In addition, the evaluation structure of signs was found to consist of four elements: “Harmonicity”, “Clarity”, “Visibility”, and “Comprehensibility”. “Harmonicity” was indicated to be as important as “Clarity” and “Visibility”. These results suggest that the replacement of text with diagrams on signs contributes to the improvement of impressions and is particularly effective for non-Japanese speakers., Jan. 2022, 12, 3, 1499, 1499, Scientific journal, 10.3390/app12031499

  • Refereed, Proceedings of the Conference CIE 2021, International Commission on Illumination, CIE, CREATING A SENSE OF THE UNUSUAL WITH CHROMATIC LIGHT, K. Inoue; S. Kaba; J. Heo, Due to the influence of COVID-19, there is a need to create an environment where people can relax and feel special in a separated space. Therefore, in this study, we will clarify the psychological changes that occur when people are surrounded by an unusual environment.
This study prepared eight LED lighting colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, light blue, purple, and white. The room was illuminated, and the participants were asked to evaluate their impressions using the SD method on a 7-point scale.
As a result of impression evaluation, red gave a warm impression, yellow gave a bright impression, blue gave a cold impression, and purple gave a mature impression, just like the psychological effects of colours. Green gave an artificial impression that was different from the psychological effects of the other colours.
From these results, we can conclude that impressions do not correlate with colour symbolism when the entire room is illuminated with coloured light. In the future, we will clarify the relationship between wavelength and impression by studying the spectral distribution of each light source., Dec. 2021, International conference proceedings, 10.25039/x48.2021.po44
  • Refereed, Proceedings of the Conference CIE 2021, International Commission on Illumination, CIE, A STUDY ON THE DIFFERENCES IN VISION BETWEEN THE YOUNG AND THE ELDERLY IN SIGNS, M. Ishihara; K. Suzuki; J. Heo, It has been shown that with aging, cataracts become cloudy and colour perception and visual acuity deteriorate. As the world's population ages, there is a need for signage that considers older people's visual characteristics. This study aimed to clarify the effects of sign components on visual perception and identify differences in the effects of age. We conducted a psychological evaluation using the semantic differential method on 20 young and 10 elderly. The results showed that the younger participants gave higher ratings to many questions than the older participants. The factor analysis results showed that the items of the questionnaire consisted of a "visibility factor" and "harmony factor". The elderly were more likely to be affected by the viewing distance than the young invisibility., Dec. 2021, International conference proceedings, 10.25039/x48.2021.op58
  • Refereed, Proceedings of the Conference CIE 2021, International Commission on Illumination, CIE, THE EFFECT OF LIGHTING ENVIRONMENT ON FACIAL EXPRESSION PERCEPTION IN VIDEO TELECONFERENCING, K. Suzuki; Y. Takeuchi; J. Heo, In this study, we investigated whether manipulating the lighting environment in videoconferencing changes the readability of facial expressions. In the experiment, the participants were asked to evaluate their impressions of a video that simulated the situation in a videoconference. A total of 12 lighting conditions were used, including three colour temperature conditions and four lighting directions conditions. As a result of the factor analysis, four factors were identified: "Clarity," "Dynamism," "Naturalness," and "Healthiness." The results of ANOVA showed that placing the lighting in front was effective for all factors. And in all of the factors, it showed that lighting from the front was effective for the participants. In addition, while lower colour temperature decreased clarity, it improved naturalness and healthiness and was particularly effective when the lighting was placed in front of the subject., Dec. 2021, International conference proceedings, 10.25039/x48.2021.op51
  • Refereed, Applied Sciences, MDPI AG, Comprehensive Evaluation of the Visual Environment of a Railroad Station’s Platform, Focused on the User’s Psychology, Jaeyoung Heo; Miki Kozaki; Takaaki Koga; Kotaroh Hirate; Hyun Bae Kim, Through a comprehensive evaluation of the spaces of 25 railway stations, where power-saving operations are being conducted due to an earthquake, the effects of various components of the space on users’ psychology were reviewed. For the platforms of railway stations, which are divided into ‘island platforms’ and ‘side platforms’ the ‘physical quantity measurement’ and ‘impression evaluation’ were assessed. When a simple power-saving method, such as partial lighting up is adopted, it has been shown that there is a negative effect on the users, both physically and psychologically. In particular, in the case of outdoor platforms, there is a concern that glare and anxiety due to contrast may increase; therefore, it is necessary to utilize the reflective surfaces effectively. Floor illuminance is fundamental to lighting design. However, some areas cannot be evaluated by floor illuminance alone. The difference in the results of the impression evaluation in five areas with floor illuminance around 50 lx was widely distributed, and it was found that the shape and material of the space affected the results. If platform screen doors are installed, a lighting method that can evenly illuminate the interior of the space is necessary. By reviewing each factor that determines the visual impression, it was revealed that the lighting location and lighting method were significantly affected., Jul. 2021, 11, 14, 6566, 6566, Scientific journal, 10.3390/app11146566

By measuring illuminance, brightness, and subjective evaluations of stairs of stations, it shows that illuminance and brightness of the lower view angle influence greatly on subjective evaluations. Taking that result, we conclude that lighting set in handrails of stair can illuminate most efficiently.
The second purpose is to clarify the influence of variation of lighting height. Intended for elderly people and young people, we conducted an experiment. As a result, variation of height of handrail lighting does not influence on subjective evaluations greatly. However, the evaluations in the environment of handrail lighting tend to be higher than that of ceiling lighting. In addition, it shows that elderly people can feel security in the environment of handrail lighting., Feb. 2018, 83, 744, 119, 127, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aije.83.119

Research Projects

, kaken
