  • Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 01 Apr. 2017 - 31 Mar. 2021, 17K02619, Study of " Heilbad"(health spa) images in early modern German literature, folklore, and pictorial sources, Yoshida Takao, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Nara Women's University, 2600000, 2000000, 600000, In early modern Germany, the hot springs that treat illnesses with mineral springs form a unique space of discourse where ancient Western spiritual medicine and views of nature compete with modern natural science, capitalism, and resort development. An attempt was here made to give a chronological overview of the ideological world of early modern Germans over hot springs.
    The main materials are the Hagiography of the end of the Middle Ages, the collections of early modern German miracle legends, Th. Murner in the 16th century, A. Kircher and Grimmelshausen in the 17th century. We aimed to give an overview and consider the range of the view of nature and space peculiar to the early modern period. The view of nature shows a unique spiritual consciousness that goes beyond mere materiality, and the reference to the source of hot water is a mechanism to awaken the consciousness of the origin of individuals, human beings, and history itself., kaken

  • Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 01 Apr. 2013 - 31 Mar. 2017, 25370357, Popular Cultural Study on the "Curiosity"-Narrative Collections in Early Modern Germany, YOSHIDA TAKAO, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Nara Women's University, 2600000, 2000000, 600000, Based on a group of works called "curiosity"-narrative collections which was disseminated to the German-speaking region of early modern epoch, I revealed the mental-historical features of this era. This was a great epidemic reading that was numerously publicated from the 16th century to the 18th century, accumulating the mysterious events of the world to serve bourgeoisie readers in cities. The negative "curiosity" view since Augustine underwent value change in the Renaissance period, and a unique interest in diverse phenomena and incidents of this world arise. Specifically, based on Tannhaeuser and Arlaune tradition, I analyzed the unique political implications of the discourse and the people's beliefs to the late medival times and the early modern era before they were given modern interpretations later by the Grimm brothers.
