  • Refereed, Journal of the Sedimentological Society of Japan, The Sedimentological Society of Japan, Distribution of gravel-sand on high water bed by Typhoon Hagibis (T1919) flood in the middle reaches of the Tama River, central Japan, Shirai Masaaki; Utsugawa Takako, Distribution of clastic grains transported and deposited on high water bed during Typhoon Hagibis (T1919) flood in the middle reaches of the Tama River was investigated. Gravel deposition tends to be predominant from upstream part to river channel side of central part of banks. On the other hand, middle-fine grained sand deposition tends to be predominant from far side from river channel of central part to downstream part of banks. The sands often make low-relief 2D dune bedform. The gravels were often deposited on a trough which has been fixed on a bank during several decades. Average rate of the gravel movement during T1919 flood on a trough was estimated as being less than several 10 m/hour. Even though the T1919 flood, one of the biggest flood during several decades in Japan, transported and arranged various sized grains (boulder-sand) on sand-gravel bank conspicuously, hardly changed the form of the banks. Considering devastating flood caused by the rainfall beyond an expected level might increase in future, it is important to record and publish the situation of transport and sedimentation of the clastic grains by T1919 flood at various place in the Japanese islands., 2022, 80, 1・2, 11, 25, 10.4096/jssj.80.11

    The valley in the upper reaches of the Abe River, Shizuoka Prefecture, was filled with an "Oya-Kuzure" slope failure deposit from the early 18th century Hoei Earthquake. The Akamizu Fall, which has maximum river-bed gradient in the distribution area of the slope failure deposit, is located on 0.4km downstream from the confluence of the Oya River originating from the "Oya-Kuzure" on the Abe River mainstream. Distribution of slope failure deposit (mainly debris flow deposit) and paleocurrent estimated from imbrication of gravels in the debris flow deposit around the Akamizu Fall showed that the waterfall was formed by a shortcut of the incised meander valley across a shale ridge due to deposition of slope failure deposit filling the valley. Similarly, constrained gorges located in the distribution area of slope failure deposit were formed by filling an old valley with slope failure deposit and subsequent downward erosion of basement rock (Neogene shale) slope. Sedimentological features of the slope failure deposit and the relationship of depositional surfaces of the deposit imply that transportation mode of the slope failure deposit might have transformed from debris flow to hyperconcentrated flow 0.5km downstream of the Akamizu Fall.

  • Refereed, Journal of the Sedimentological Society of Japan, The Sedimentological Society of Japan, Characteristics of breaking and abrasion mechanisms acting on fluvial sediments during production and transport processes : relationships between rock type, grain size, and roundness of gravel and sand, Utsugawa Takako; Shirai Masaaki, Breaking and abrasion mechanisms act on the sands and gravels transported in riverine environments as pristine finer grains are produced. To elucidate the characteristics of these grain-producing mechanisms, the relationships between rock type, grain size, and roundness of detritus were examined. The downstream changes in roundness of both sand and gravel fractions (0.5-128 mm in diameter) were investigated at two tributaries of the Watarase River, central Japan, under similar fluvial and geological conditions. The tendency that grain roundness and ratio of chert and shale (ch/sh) became lower as the grain size became finer indicates that pristine angular grains produced from broken and/or abraded coarser grains increased in the finer grain size fraction. At downstream sites, where more transported grains were deposited, the authors identified the phenomenon that the roundness values were highly similar within certain consecutive grain size fractions; i.e., “roundness in saturation.” This indicates an increase in angular grains produced from transported coarser grains and an increase in abraded and rounded grains become in attainment of equilibrium during transport. The onset of roundness value saturation, i.e., no additional increase of grain roundness during the transport process, would differ according to rock type. In this study, the roundness value of chert and shale was 0.4 (sub-angular) and 0.6 (sub-rounded), respectively.   • Refereed, Geographical review of Japan series A, The Association of Japanese Geographers, A Review of Roundness, a Fundamental Shape Parameter of Detrital Particles: History of Analysis and Analytic Prospects, Takako UTSUGAWA; Masaaki SHIRAI,

    Studies on the external geometry of detrital particles are subject to controversy. This paper reviews the history of detrital grain shape analysis, particularly "roundness", since the first half of the 20th century and within various fields, e.g., physical geography, civil engineering, and mathematics. The authors suggest a flow chart supporting stable evaluation of grain roundness with the Krumbein roundness chart, which is suitable for prompt semi-quantitative measurement of roundness and has been commonly used. Additionally, the authors redefine surface texture, a smaller-scale shape feature, because the boundary between roundness and surface texture is ambiguous in current studies with high-resolution image analysis. The methodological transition from analogue to digital measurement, i.e., image analysis, is in progress, and two- or three-dimensional quantitative image analysis is the preferred measurement approach. It is necessary to discuss further appropriate evaluation of grain shape corresponding to image analysis.

  • Distribution and sedimentological characteristics of boulders on refreshed gravel bar by Typhoon 1919 in the middle of the Tama River, central Japan, UTSUGAWA Takako; SHIRAI Masaaki, After the flooding caused by Typhoon Hagibis (T1919), a lot of boulders have deposited on the refreshed gravely bars in the middle reaches of the Tama River. Because the most coarse grains usually might deposit on the bottom of river channel which are hard to observe, investigation of them is important to understand the longitudinal and transverse riverine geomorphology as well as the characteristics of sediment which have transported before the condition under control of the water and detritus supply. On March to May in 2020, the authors have investigated the sedimentological characteristics of the boulders distributed on the gravel bars at three sites; Ome, Hamura and Tachikawa, in the middle reaches of the Tama River. We have measured the three axes; long, intermediate and short axes, and have investigated the lithology, the roundness and the broken condition of the boulders more than 25 cm in long axis, distributed around the parallel lines set along the flow direction. Sandstone, chert, diorite, shale, conglomerate, tuff, alternation of sandstone and shale, and limestone boulders were observed. Distinct decrease in grain size from the highest site (Ome) to the lowest site (Tachikawa) in the 15 km was not recognized. The ratio of broken gravels and the roundness of gravels reflect the intensity of water flow and gravel transportation in riverine environment.   • Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Apr. 2018 - Mar. 2023, 18K01128, Coinvestigator, Geographical study on Prompt land use changes on riverside land from the viewpoint of dynamics of physical and social environment along the middle Arakawa river, Saitama, Japan, 島津 弘; 鈴木 重雄; 宇津川 喬子; 伊藤 徹哉; 横山 貴史; 原 将也; 原 美登里, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Rissho University, 4420000, 3400000, 1020000, 埼玉県の荒川および宮城県の名取川において堤外地の空中写真の判読および現地における観察と聞き取り調査,現地における文献・資料収集を実施し,自然・生態と災害リスク,堤外地をめぐる社会と政治,堤外地の文化と生業の概要を把握した.自然分野に関しては微地形分布,社会分野に関しては土地利用変遷,土地所有形態,不法占有,かつて存在した堤外地集落の現状,生業分野に関しては現在の農業的土地利用についての概要を把握した.
    堤外地は築堤以前から存在する集落や土地利用の影響があるものの,自然の状態に近い微地形が存在している.土地所有や地割は流路跡などの微地形の影響を受け,矩形ではなく,1つの地形単位が分割されるような形態を示している.土地利用としては過去から大部分が畑地として利用されているが,比較的最近まで集落が存在していた場所の周囲では現在でも水田が分布し,稲作が行われている.一方で,名取川堤外地においては,畑地利用はされているものの,元の所有者以外に貸し出され,あるいは家庭菜園のように利用され,一部においては元所有者が不明になっているような場所も見られた.さらに,元々の所有者が自所有地に加え,国所有の官地を借り入れて農業を行っている事例も見られた.
    名取川では,特に河口に近いほど耕作の行われていない土地が広がり,東北地方太平洋沖地震の津波遡上による土地荒廃,あるいは所有者死亡,移転にともなっての耕作を行わなくなった土地が広がっていることが観察された.より上流側においては,かつて不耕作地が広がっていたのを確認していたが,ほぼ全面的に耕作が再開されていることも確認できた., kaken

  • Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 01 Apr. 2018 - 31 Mar. 2022, 18K03762, Coinvestigator, Understanding of mega debris flow disasters around mounatainous area of central Japan based on sedimentological investigation, Shirai Masaaki, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Tokyo Metropolitan University, 4420000, 3400000, 1020000, The sedimentological characteristics of hyperconcentrated flow (HCF) deposits formed by a slope failure event in the upper reaches of the Abe River, central Japan, were investigated. The lower major unit, composed of alternating pebble and cobble layers were interpreted as traction carpet deposits accumulating rapidly during a hyperconcentrated flow event based on the lithofacies, clast orientation, and matrix grain size distribution. Based on the extremely high mud content within the matrix of the middle unit, consisting of poorly sorted structureless muddy pebble gravel with cobble-boulder, this unit was interpreted as a suspension fallout deposit created during the waning phase of the hyperconcentrated flow event. Most of the cobble-boulder included in the middle unit likely consists of entrained basement blocks from the valley wall. The upper unit was interpreted as a debris flow deposit from which HCF was generated according to the dilution by water., kaken
