  本年度は帝国戦争博物館のコレクションを収集した委員会の一つである女性労働小委員会に焦点をあて、「女性が女性をコメモレイト（顕彰）する」ことに大きな意義を見出した同委員会が発揮したイニシアティヴとその限界に迫った。とくに絵画や写真、模型といった美術史料・ビジュアル史料の収集過程に着目することで、女性労働小委員会がテーマ設定、画家の選定から制作依頼まで一手に引き受け、博物館のコレクションづくりに積極的に関与した事実を明らかにした。小委員会の報告書や調査書、女性写真家の回想録といった史料の分析を通して、女性労働小委員会のコレクション・ポリシーを明確化するとともに、企画から収集、展示までの一連のプロセスを再構成することで、小委員会が直面した問題を当時のジェンダー概念との関わりのなかで考察した。以上の研究成果をもとに、論文'Museum as Propaganda'を執筆し、UrbanScope（12,2021)に発表した。
  また、捕虜、脱走兵、良心的兵役拒否者など、コメモレイトの対象から排除されてきた「弱き男たち」に焦点をあてることで、戦争博物館が描く戦時マスキュリニティの揺らぎについても考察した。兵士として勇敢に戦うことがマスキュリニティの核となる戦時にあって、戦争神経症に罹患した兵士たちは、自らが喪失したマスキュリニティをいかに回復しようとしたのか。戦後に立ち上げられた戦争神経症に関する調査委員会での証言に着目しながら、伝統的な戦時マスキュリニティがいかに修正され、再構築されたかを「覇権的マスキュリニティの揺らぎ？」と題する論文にまとめ『日本ジェンダー研究』（24,2021年）に発表した。, kaken

The transition and characteristics of the “women's narratives of the world wars” in the 1930s, 1950s, and 1970s were clarified, focusing on the experiences of women who lived during both wars, particularly the “ordinary” women who joined the armed forces. The process by which personal experiences and narratives have been remembered and historicised in the long space-time of the “post-war” period was historically reconsidered as a method to construct/reconstruct the current image of the world wars., kaken_url

During the First World War the British government introduced women into the armed forces on the large scale. The women, who enlisted in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps and stepped into the battle fields, destabialised binary gender systems. These 'fighting women' threatened not only the masculinity of soldiers but also the feminity of women on the home front. The 'female masculnity' could challenge the dominant masculinity that naturalised the relation between maleness and militarism., kaken_url

The ex-suffragettes' offensive action against contemporary feminism was motivated by their disillusionment with the outcome of female enfranchisement. The suffragettes who turned to fascism like Mary Allen, however, retained their identification as feminists. Allen, ultimately rejected the liberal democracy insisted the continuity between their militant feminism and fascism and tried to prove the benefits of this relationship. The close relationship between suffrage militancy and British fascist politics was persistent farther throughout the inter-war period., kaken_url

• 若手研究(B), 2005 - 2007, 17720196, 保主主義・性・階級-20世紀初頭イギリス女性警察を通して-, 林田 敏子, 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 若手研究(B), 摂南大学, 3500000, 3500000, 第一次世界大戦期のイギリスでは「カーキ・フィーバー」と呼ばれる制服熱が高まり、多くの女性が制服を着用する職業に殺到した。女性による制服の着用は、愛国心を表明する手段として社会の一定の理解を得る一方、男と女の境界を侵犯する行為として危険視された。本研究では、イギリス初の女性警察組織(Women Police Service:WPS)の制服をめぐっておこなわれた裁判を通して、大戦期におけるジェンダーとセクシュアリティの問題について考察した。裁きの主たる対象となったWPSの指導者M・アレンにとって、制服は旧来のジェンダー秩序を打ち破り、男性の領域に進出する道具であると同時に、自らの性的アイデンティティ(レズビアニズム)を表現する手段でもあった。
  本研究では、当時のイギリスで、レズビアニズムという概念がまだ流布していなかった事実に注目し、性科学の分野で女性同士のホモセクシュアル行為がどのようにとらえられていたのか分析するとともに、そうした概念が知的フィールドを越えて社会に広まった契機・背景・過程について考察した。制服裁判は、アレンのセクシュアリティを「暴露」することによって、レズビアニズムが概念化されるきっかけをつくるとともに、男性だけでなく女性のあいだにもホモセクシュアルの関係が成り立つとする点で「性的平等化」の契機にもなりうるものだった。第一次世界大戦は「レズビアニズムの発見」というもっとも極端なかたちで、女性のセクシュアリティに関する規範を破壊し、従来のジェンダー秩序に大きな修正を迫ったのである。
  以上の成果をもとに、研究会で口頭発表(於「越境する歴史学」2007年11月11日)をおこなった上で、論文「制服の時代-第一次世界大戦期イギリスにおけるジェンダーとセクシュアリティ-」を執筆し、『西洋史学』(日本西洋史学会)に投稿(2008年2月)した。, kaken

• 若手研究(B), 2002 - 2004, 14710267, 近代イギリス警察の社会史研究-「地域」の視点から-, 林田 敏子, 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 若手研究(B), 摂南大学, 3900000, 3900000, イギリス初の国家警察となったテムズ・ポリスの有給判事、ジョン・ハリオットの汚職事件を追った。1809年から数年にわたって審理されたハリオットの裁判は、脱税・密輸・公金横領・便宜供与など53もの事件で構成され、皮肉にもそれは、ロンドン港で繰り広げられるあらゆる「犯罪」を網羅したものであった。膨大な量の裁判記録を分析することで明らかになったのは、ハリオットの「汚職」が、税関役人や港湾労働者、船主や荷主、故買屋や窃盗団に至るまで、ロンドン港に生きる多くの人びとに「支えられる」形ではじめて可能になった点である。事務官による内部告発でありながら、有罪判決が下されたのがわずかに1件であったという事実が、法廷に立った多くの「関係者」の証言がハリオットにいかに有利に働いたかを物語っている。汚職判事を中心とした強固な腐敗構造が、ロンドン港全体を広く覆っていたのである。
  裁判は汚職事件の枠をこえ、警察あるいは治安維持のあり方をめぐる大論争へと発展した。「予防」「起訴」「裁判」3つの機能を備えた唯一の警察であったテムズ・ポリスは、国家の後ろ盾と有給判事という革新性をもってしても、18世紀の「旧き腐敗」を打破することはできなかった。法廷機能を備えた予防警察の「限界」をあぶりだしたハリオット裁判は、「予防」と「検挙」に特化した警察の導入議論に拍車をかけるとともに、国家警察の是非についても大きな見直しをせまることになった。現代的な意味での「法廷」と「警察」が「切り離された」瞬間であったといえよう。以上の成果をもとに、現在、「19世紀初頭のロンドン港と『汚職判事』-先駆的国家警察の「限界」-」(仮題)と題した論文を執筆中である。, kaken
