Four years after the pandemic, COVID-19 is still spreading and subsiding, and it is expected that some athletes are still concerned about COVID-19. Therefore, we developed the COVID-19 Anxiety Scale for Elite Athletes (CAS-EA) to measure COVID-19 anxiety among Japanese elite athletes and to examine its reliability and validity. Method: This is an observational cross-sectional study. In study 1, a 35-item anxiety questionnaire about COVID-19 was administered to 100 elite athletes on 8/18-9/1/2020. In study 2, 296 elite athletes were asked to respond to the CAS-EA, the Japanese version of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the Japanese version of the Fear of Coronavirus Virus Scale (FCV-19S) from 8/31-11/8/2022. Results: In study 1, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted to create CAS-EA, which consisted of 19 items with four factors: Restrictions, Sport, Practice and Athlete value. The reliability of the scales was examined, confirming a certain internal consistency. In addition, study 2 showed significant positive correlations with CAS-EA and related scales. In the COVID-19 disaster, psychological stress was more strongly associated with A-trait than physical stress, a result that could be explained by Spielberger’s Trait-state anxiety theory. Furthermore, CAS-EA scores were significantly higher for female than for male, which was consistent with the results of previous studies. Conclusion: An attempt was made to create a scale to measure anxiety about COVID-19 in Japanese elite athletes, and a 4-factor, 19-item CAS-EA was created. The reliability and validity of the scale were tested and confirmed successfully., Apr. 2024, 3, 2, 63, 69, Scientific journal, 10.1024/2674-0052/a000080

- Refereed, Japanese Journal of Sport Psychology, 日本スポーツ心理学会, Developing a Model of the Kotsu Acquisition Process in Athletes, Asano Tomoyuki; Nakagomi Shiro, In this study, kotsu (knack) is defined as a physical movement's main aspect, subjectively judged by an athlete, enabling him or her to perform the movement. This study aimed to develop a model of external and internal changes in athletes during the process of their acquisition of kotsu for their sport, and to investigate the characteristics of psychological changes that occurred during the acquisition of kotsu. In phase I, to develop a model of the kotsu acquisition process, the cases of 20 top athletes from a previous study on kotsu acquisition were analyzed using the Modified Grounded Theory Approach. Results demonstrated the presence of external changes such as "a motive to acquire kotsu," "training to acquire kotsu," and "changes in performance," and also internal changes such as "desire for change," "clear ideals," and "psychological changes." In phase II, interviews were conducted with 3 athletes, retired and active, who had acquired kotsu in the past, and the characteristics of psychological changes accompanying acquisition were examined to further refine the model developed in phase I. Results indicated that there was an association between external and internal changes at each stage of the kotsu acquisition process. Moreover, when athletes acquired kotsu, they underwent psychological changes such as "cultivation of autonomy," "self-actualization in competitive environments," and "building a foundation for future challenges after kotsu acquisition." Thus, the findings of this study have clarified the process of athletes acquiring kotsu in their sport and also demonstrated the presence of psychological changes accompanying the acquisition of kotsu. The experience of acquiring kotsu also appears to be important for athletes' personality development., 2014, 41, 1, 35, 50, Scientific journal

こうした現場レベルでの事象,経験的知識も踏まえながら,アスリートのコツ獲得体験の意義について質的研究の立場から検討していく., kaken - Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Exploratory Research, 2009 - 2011, 21650159, The relationship between athletic adaptation and individuation in athletes, NAKAGOMI Shiro; EDA Kaori; KOTANI Katsuhiko; ASANO Tomoyuki, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, University of Tsukuba, 3190000, 2800000, 390000, The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between athletic adaptation (performance enhancement) and individuation (personality development) in athletes. In order to achieve this purpose, 3 sub-research tasks were settled as follows ; 1. to verify the effectiveness of mental training program oriented toward the exploration of the athlete's inner world, 2. to consider psychological meanings of Dialogical Athletic Experiences in self-development among athletes, 3. to examine psychological changes with acquiring Kotsu (knack or secret) in their individuation process. The accomplishment of 3 research assignments made it clear that there was the coincidental relationship between athletic adaptation and individuation in athletes., kaken
