    東晋末から劉宋期にかけての北伐には、多くの逸話が伝わる。観世音に祈り救われる応験譚もその一種である。日本の青蓮院に伝存する『観世音応験記』については、日本・中国ともに少なからぬ研究の蓄積があるものの、そのほとんどが仏教史や志怪小説史の流れに位置づけて「観世音応験記」を考察したものである。本稿では、それら先学の研究成果を踏まえたうえで、個々の説話の歴史的地理的背景を詳細に検討することによって、観世音応験譚が希求された時代的・地域的・階層的状況を、可能な限り具体的に考察することを目指した。
    観世音応験譚はパターン化されている。今回、焦点を当てたのは、闇夜に灯火に導かれて北方から南に逃げ帰る型の応験譚である。このパターンに多いのが、一つには、北方出身の武人が南に帰順する際の逃亡劇であり、もう一つには、晋宋の北伐の際の捕虜や敗残の兵の逃亡劇である。前者の武人（毛徳祖や王仲徳）は、南渡後、北伐の主力として活躍する将軍でもあるから、両者とも北伐に関する語りと言ってよかろう。後者について留意すべきは、逃げ帰る兵の多くが彭城をはじめとする淮河南北や江北地域の人であり、言いかえれば、南と北との中間地域が語りの場となっている点である。観世音応験譚は、まさに南北の争いの境界域において生まれていたと考えられる。
    以上のように、武人をめぐる応験譚の発生と変容には、北伐の歴史の転換点、南北の中間地帯特有の地域性が大きく関わっている。なお、こういった将兵やその周辺の人々の語りが、武人の政治的台頭によって書物に記されるようになる過程があったと想定されるが、それについては更なる検討が必要である。, kaken
