  • Refereed, Europhysics Letters, Observation of Riemannian geometrical effects on electronic states, J. Onoe; T. Ito; H. Shima; H. Yoshioka; S. Kimura, Einstein first applied Riemannian geometry to develop the general theory of relativity almost one hundred years ago and succeeded in understanding astronomical-scale phenomena such as the straining of time-space by a gravitational field. Whether or not Riemannian space affects the electronic properties of condensed matters on a much smaller scale is of great interest. Although Riemannian geometry has been applied to quantum mechanics since the 1950s, nobody has yet answered this question, because the electronic properties of materials with Riemannian geometry have not been examined experimentally. We report here the first observation of Riemannian geometrical effects on the electronic properties of materials such as Tomononaga-Luttinger liquids, which were previously theoretically predicted by our group. We present in situ high-resolution ultraviolet photoemission spectra of a one-dimensional metallic C60 polymer with an uneven periodic peanut-shaped structure., 2012, 98, 2, 27001, Scientific journal, 10.1209/0295-5075/98/27001

  • Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas, 2006 - 2007, 18028018, 有限温度における擬一次元分子性導体の電荷秩序の理論-量子揺らぎと高次元性の共存-, YOSHIOKA Hideo; KATO Takeo, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas, Nara Women's University, 3600000, 3600000, 擬一次元電子系で見出されている様々な秩序状態の有限温度における性質を理論的に考察するには、従来、純粋な一次元の模型に対して平均場近似が適用されてきた。 , kaken

, kaken

It was shown that Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state is realized in the carbon nanotubes in the wide range of the temperature from 10 K to room temperature. The nano-graphite ribbons are known to have the anomalous dispersion relation near the Fermi energy different from the usual metals. We investigated the electronic correlation of the materials. It was shown that the mutual interaction leads to Mott insulating ground state and the spin excitation becomes gapless (gapped) for the odd (even) number of zigzag chains.
2.Splitting of the Knight shift and of the NMR relaxation rate have been considered to be the experimental evidence of charge ordering in the molecular conductors. In the case of quarter-filling, however, no one show theoretically that the charge ordering leads to such phenomena. In the present study, we calculated the Knight shift and the NMR relaxation rate in the pure charge ordered state of one-dimensional extended Hubbard model. Here, the fluctuation around the mean-field solution is taken into account by RPA. It is shown that the both quantities show splitting under the charge ordering, as has been already insisted. In addition, the amount of charge disproportionation estimated from the NMR experiments becomes larger than the actual value.
3.Quite recently, the materials with incommensurate decomposition ratios close to 2:1 such as (MDT-TSF)_2X_n, (MDT-ST)_2X_n, and (MDT-TS)_2X_n with X being a monovalent anion and n=0.42〜0.45 have been synthesized and the transport and magnetic properties of these compounds have been measured. The materials (MDT-TSF)_2X_n and (MDT-ST)_2X_n show metallic conduction and undergo the superconducting transition at 4 K for ambient pressure. On the other hand, (MDT-TS)_2(AuI_2)_<0.441> shows the metal-insulator transition at 85 K. In order to clarify why the metal-insulator transition occurs in the case of incommensurate band filling, we investigated the ground state of one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with incommensurate lattices. When the potential from the anions is taken into account, the ground state is Mott insulator, and the increase of band width leads to metal-insulator transition. These results will qualitatively explain the experimental observation shown above., kaken

Candidates for the island of TLL C-SET are carbon nanotubes and quantum wires. In this theory, the charging effect and the Tomonaga-Luttinger nature are treated in a consistent manner by the open boundary bosonization technique with consideration of zero modes based on the theory of C-SET for Fermi liquid electrodes. Analytical expression of the tunneling current in TLL C-SET is obtained up to the lowest order with respect to the tunneling Hamiltonian for arbitrary environmental impedance and it reasonably describes current-voltage characteristics caused by Coulomb blockade in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. We showed that, in the ultrasmall but finite Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, interaction-dependent exponent of the power law has system size dependence in addition to contact- (bulk- or edge-) nature dependence.
Electronic properties of carbon nanotube and carbon nanotube families are also studied. NMR relaxation rate, spin excitation and Friedel oscillation of local charge density are discussed. In future, based on the specific TLL theory to carbon nanotubes, the theory proposed in this research should be extended in order to understand the details of the current-voltage characteristics experimentally found., kaken

1.We have first confirmed one-dimensional van Hove singularities by means of photoemission spectroscopy by using highly purified single-wall carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, we have fond two power law dependences of electronic density of states (DOS). The first one is power law dependence of DOS on the binding energy and the second one is power law of DOS at the Fermi level on the temperature. The exponents are 0.46 and 0.48, respectively that just agree with the theoretical predictions for the one-dimensional metallic system so called Tomonaga Luttinger liquid (TLL) system. Our result is the most reliable evidence that the TLL system is realized even in the bundle of single-wall carbon nanotubes.
2.The isolated nanotubes embedded in the support materials were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition of ethanol and the optical properties of them were measured. The sample shows very narrow radial breathing Raman peaks with the half width less than 1.5 cm-1. The Raman spectrum does not contain any peaks peculiar to the bundles. This new sample gave us useful information about electronic structure of carbon nanotubes and the selection rule of the optical transition.
3.When we introduced water molecules into carbon nanotubes, we found that water molecules transformed to ice-nanotubes at low temperature. By changing the diameter of carbon nanotubes we can control the diameter of ice-nanotube. We found that ice nanotube with different diameter has different freezing point. The larger diameter of ice-nanotube leads to the lower freezing point, which is opposite to the empirical rule.

, kaken

, kaken

(i) The transition from insulator to metal occurs under pressures in the normal state of Bechgaard salts, which exhibit the charge gap. Such a transition is determined by a ratio of the charge gap to the interchain hopping. The mechanism has been studied by use of two-coupled chains with a half-filled band, in which the one-dimensional fluctuation is treated in terms of the renormalization group method. It is demonstrated that the confinement occurs when the charge gap becomes larger than than the interchain hopping. Further the effect of the electron-filling from the commensurate state has been examined. (2) The spin density wave of organic conductors exhibits a novel transition at temperature of the 1/3 of the critical temperature. By using a phase Hamiltonian for two-coupled chains of SDW, the effect of the phase difference between chain has been investigated by use of the transfer integral method. It is shown that the competition between the commensurability energy and interchain coupling gives rise to the transition from the commensurate state to the incommensurate state. (3) The effect of impurity in two-coupled spinless chain has been studied to understand the role of interchain hopping in quasi-one-dimensional systems. It is found that the one-dimensional localization occurs when the pinning energy of impurity becomes larger than the interaction induced interchain gap. Besides the above results, we have examined the electronic state of one-dimensional electrons, collective modes of spin density wave and the impurity effect on spin Peirls system., kaken

(J.Phys. Soc. Japan 64 No.11 (1995) 4092-4096) The aim of the present project was to utilize the new expression of the Mori formura for examining the traditional understanding of the Mori formula itself and searching possibility of its extensive application, e.g., for calculation of the transport coefficients in many electron systems.
As it should be, the Mori formula must be equivalent to the Kubo formula. In fact, we have confirmed the equivalence explicitly for resitivity due to impurity scattering and optical conductivity in 2 band systems. (J.Phys. Soc. Japan 65 No.2 (1996) 525-528) Moreover, with the help of some identities which hold among dynamical correlation functions, it. has been shown that the both formulae are equivalent to each other rigorously. (J.Phys. Soc. Japan 65 No.2 (1996) 342-344)
However, in real systems we must rely upon the some approximation procedure and it may happen that there occurs some discrepancy between results obtained through the two formulae. In fact, it has been widely believed that when we calculate electrical resistivity the memory function approximation based on the Mori formula is more convinient to he used. Then, in order to check whether it. is really so or not, we have calculated electrical resistivity clue to the impurity scattering and also that clue to the d-p hybridization term by applying the same approximation procedure to the two formulae and shown that the both results are identical and the memory function approximation is justified at high frequency limit, which invalidiate the traditional way of its application. (J.Phys. Soc. Japan 66 No.9 (1997) 2790-2797)。
In conclusion, we argue that the Mori formula and the Kubo formula are identical to each other as far as the same approximation procedure are applied., kaken

, kaken

Following three subjects have been investigated. (1) The fluctuation of the commensurate spin density wave (SDW) has been examined by calculating collective modes of a Hubbard model with a quarter-filled band. The longitudinal mode shows the gap and the coexistence of the 2k_F-SDW and the 4k_F-CDW.The effect of anion lattice was examined in terms of a phase Hamiltonian. (2) A role of interchain hopping in quasi-1D organic conductors was examined by applying the phase Hamiltonian based on the bosonization to two coupled chains with the repulsive interaction of backward and forward scatterings. The competition of SDW state and superconducting state explains the phase diagram of in the quasi-1D conductors. (3) The metal-insulatortarnsition in DCNQI-Cu salts was examined by applying the slave-boson mean-field theory to the periodic Anderson model with the electron-phonon (e-p) interaction. The fact that the M-I transition is the Peierls transition in the presence of the strong correlation has been shown by calculating the reentrant transition of M-I-M,the phase diagram specific heat and magnetic susceptibility, the dimensional effect and the antiferromagnetic state. Thus we have shown the mechanism of the M-I transition., kaken

, kaken
