- Refereed, Japanese Journal of Sociology, Wiley, The fan culture of the bluebird movement: The creativity of the younger generation in Taiwan's political activity, Chen Ichen, Abstract
This paper takes an in‐depth look into Taiwan's Bluebird Movement, a social movement that emerged in May 2024. The participants of this movement inherited many of the everyday methods utilized by the Sunflower Movement that happened in 2014. This study examines how the younger generation leverages the fan cultures they engage with and adapts them for practical applications within the Bluebird Movement. It has been observed that Taiwan's younger generation tends to view ‘political activities’ and ‘daily activities’ as equally important events, to such a degree that they would apply things seemingly ordinary in their fandom to political activities and thus break through established social norms. It was also observed that Taiwan's younger generation altered the fan culture they have adopted into their daily lives and strategically applied it to the social movement in which they participate. Furthermore, they would also extend the dedication they practice daily within their fandom toward the social movement. Taiwan has long been known for vibrant youth activism, especially since the 2014 Sunflower Movement, which integrated popular and subcultural elements to make political participation more accessible and emotionally engaging. Building on this context, our study investigates how female fans adapt the skills, affective networks, and cultural repertoires cultivated in K-POP and J-POP idol-fan culture to reimagine political activism.
Our findings highlight two key dynamics. First, female participants in these social movements are challenging traditional norms of activism, which are typically viewed as "out-of-the-ordinary and public." They achieve this by applying the skills and knowledge gained through their involvement in fan activities, which are often considered "everyday and private." Second, these fans actively share their experiences and stories related to their fan practices as they engage in social movements, effectively blending their "fan identity" with their "Taiwanese identity." Challenging Gender Injustice in Popular Media: AI, Post-Human, and Virtual Imagery in Taiwan, Korea and Japan
Session Abstract
As cyberspace increasingly intertwines with physical space, issues rooted in societal gender injustices and inequalities have proliferated online. In East Asia, challenges such as harassment and discrimination against women and racial or ethnic minorities have gained visibility within digital popular culture. Moreover, AI technology has begun replacing human labor with virtual humans in media production, particularly affecting roles traditionally held by women.
This panel session examines the cases of Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan, providing an analysis of each society’s unique sociocultural context. The first presenter investigates the creation and consumption of virtual idol imagery in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, aiming to understand why these images are idealized and how the “ideal image” associated with virtual idols reinforces societal beauty standards in contemporary culture. The second presenter examines the representation and application of AI-driven humans, focusing on gender, diversity, and human labor implications. This presentation investigates the growing use of AI in fields such as mass media, where AI announcers and news presenters are increasingly substituting human labor.
The third presenter examines gender-based violence (GBV) within digital spaces, focusing on VR and the metaverse. This study analyzes the context in which GBV arises in digital spaces, the types of avatars involved, and the impact on users’ physical and psychological well-being. The "Sunflower Movement" in Taiwan and the "Umbrella Movement" in Hong Kong served as the two case studies.
Through analyzing the communication methods utilized by the participants, the study discovered that the younger generation in Taiwan and Hong Kong brought a fresh perspective to social movements due to their personal experiences and cultural practices. 今年度もパンデミックの影響で海外との渡航が制限されたため、オンラインベースで海外との交流を中心に研究を実施した。今年度の実績の概要は下記のとおりである。
1) 日常活動の支援の研究として、ミュージアムやコンサート、街歩きにおける共同作業の研究をおこない、埼玉大学教養学部
リベラルアーツ叢書(14)『観客と共創する芸術Ⅱ』として出版した。
2) 共同作業の研究として、遠隔買い物の研究やコンサート等における遠隔応援の支援、ロボット車いすを用いた共同作業の支援、ロボットを用いた買い物支援を研究し、国際学会HRIのワークショップ（ACM HRI 2022 workshop of Interdisciplinary Explorations of Processes of Mutual Understanding in Interaction with Assistive Shopping Robots）を組織し、研究発表をおこなった。また、国内の情報系の学会で発表をおこなった。
