  • Number distribution of emitted electrons by MeV H+ impact on carbon

    The statistical distributions of the number of the forward- and backward-emitted secondary electrons (SE's) from a thin carbon foil have been measured in coincidence with foil-transmitted H+ ions of 0.5-3.0 MeV in every 0.5 MeV step. The measured SE energy spectra were fitted by assuming a Polya distribution for the simultaneous n-SE emission probabilities. For our previous data with a couple of the carbon foils with different thicknesses, a similar analysis has been carried out. As a result, it was found that the measured spectra could be reproduced as well as by an analysis without placing any restriction on the emission probabilities both for the forward and backward SE emission. The obtained b-parameter of the Polya distribution, which is a measure of the deviation from a Poisson distribution due to the cascade multiplication by high energy internal SE's, increases monotonically with the incident energy of proton beams. On the other hand, a clear foil-thickness dependence is not observed for the b-parameter. A theoretical model which could reproduced the magnitude of the b-parameter for the SE energy spectra obtained with thick Au, Cu and Al targets is found to overestimates our values for thin carbon foils significantly.   • MeV ion beam extraction into air with a glass capillary filled with He

    In order to obtain an intense ion beam, we have newly developed He-capillary optics, which is a tapered glass capillary filled with low pressure He gas to extract ion beam into atmospheric air. We have measured the energy spectra of an ion beam extracted from the He-capillary as a function of He gas pressure. We have observed that the intensity of the extracted ion beam is enhanced by using the He-capillary with He gas, although peak energy is shifted to a lower energy. Furthermore, in order to evaluate the performance of the He-capillary in detail, we have measured the intensity distribution of the ion beam via the He-capillary by using a 25 μm pinhole slit and have found that the He-capillary optics provides an intense ion beam without further spread of the extracted ion beam.   • Forward–backward correlated secondary electron emission depending on the emergence angle of 1 MeV/u light ions

    The statistical distributions of the number of forward- and backward-emitted secondary electrons (SE's) from a thin carbon foil have been measured simultaneously in coincidence with foil-transmitted H-1(+), He-4(2+) and Li-6(3+) at a fixed velocity of 1 MeV/u. The emergence angles of the projectiles, theta(em), were varied from 0 to 2 [mrad] for H+ and from 0 to 1 [mrad] for He2+ and Li3+ ions. Irrespective of ion species, measured total SE yields, that is, the average number of simultaneous emitted electrons per projectile, increase with increasing theta(em) both in the forward and backward directions. This trend is consistent with the calculated theta(em)-dependent energy losses of protons penetrating a thin carbon foil. As for the forward-or backward-emitted SE yields, we have obtained a negative forward-backward(F-B) correlation, except for the theta(em) = 0.0 [mrad] emergence of H+ projectiles where a positive correlation has been observed. The negative F-B correlation becomes prominent with increasing the atomic number of the projectile, Z(p). In addition, this correlation appears to become slightly stronger with increasing theta(em). The observed F-B correlation and its Z(p) - and theta(em)-dependences are interpreted from the point of view of production of high energy internal SE's. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.   • Measurements of an ion beam diameter extracted into air through a large-bore metal capillary

    To extract an ion beam into air, the technique using a single macro-capillary has been paid attention. We have expanded the bore of the metal capillary up to 500 mu m circle divide inlet diameter to increase the beam intensity and have measured the intensity distributions of the extracted 3 MeV proton beam. Furthermore, we have tilted the capillary angle and measured the intensity distributions of the ion beam.   • Energy distribution of an ion beam extracted into air with a large bore metal capillary

    In order to clarify the transmission properties of an ion beam extracted with a large bore metal capillary into air, we measured the energy distributions of extracted 4.0 MeV alpha particles using a pinhole slit. The metal capillary we used is a conventional injection needle with 500 mu m inner diameter. As a result, we obtained two-dimensional intensity distributions of the ion beam extracted into air with this large bore metal capillary and the energy spectra at each position. We discuss the result of two-dimensional intensity distributions and report the difference of the energy spectra at the center part and at the edge. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.   • Forward-backward correlated secondary-electron emission depending on the angle of emergence of protons transmitted through a thin carbon foil

    The statistical distributions of the secondary electrons (SEs) emitted forward and backward from a thin carbon foil have been measured simultaneously, in coincidence with foil-transmitted protons of 1.0 and 2.5 MeV, as a function of the angle of emergence, theta(em), of the protons. Irrespective of the incident energy, the measured SE yields increase with increasing angle of emergence in both the forward and the backward directions. As for the forward-backward correlation of the SE emission, the forward-and backward-emitted SE yields induced by 2.5 MeV protons increase gradually with increasing number of SEs emitted in the opposite directions. This positive correlation becomes slightly more pronounced with increasing angle of emergence.   • Measurements of an ion beam diameter extracted into air through a glass capillary

    To establish techniques for in-air materials analysis using a glass capillary, we studied the beam distribution extracted in air as a function of the distance between the exit of the capillary and the target. We measured three-dimensional intensity distributions of the extracted beams, and compared the observed results with the model calculation.   • Secondary electron emission from a thin carbon foil induced by H+, He2+ and Li3+ at fixed velocity of 1 MeV/u

    The statistical distributions of the number of forward- and backward-emitted secondary electrons (SE's) from a thin carbon foil have been measured simultaneously in coincidence with foil-transmitted H+, He2+ and Li3+ ions of 1 MeV/u in order to examine the forward-backward correlation of the SE emission (refer to as 'FB correlation' hereafter). With these projectiles, we have also measured the energy spectrum of SEs emitted from another carbon foil of similar thickness in the direction around 0 degrees with respect to the incident beams. From the emission statistics data, it is found that both of the inclusive forward and backward SE yields divided by the square of the projectile atomic number (Z(p)) decrease with increasing Z(p). This trend is qualitatively consistent with previous works by other authors. On the other hand, it has been certified from the energy spectra that the yields of binary electron scale well with Z(p)(2). As for the FB correlation, the forward- or backward-emitted SE yield decreases gradually with increasing the number of SEs emitted in the opposite directions. This so-called 'negative FB correlation' appears to be pronounced for He2+ and Li3+ ions compared with that for H+ ions. Since low energy internal SEs do not contribute to the FB correlation, the observed Z(p)-dependent FB correlation seems to be consistent with the well Z(p)(2)-scaled production of high energy internal SEs and the decrease of the inclusive forward and backward SE yields with respect to this scaling.   • Effective air thickness in a glass capillary for the in-air material analysis

  • Correlated forward-backward electron emission from a thin carbon foil induced by frozen-charged and charge-changed hydrogen penetration

    Using 2.5-3.5 MeV H-0 and H+ beams penetrating a thin carbon foil, the two-dimensional probabilities of the secondary electron (SE) emission have been investigated as a function of the number of SEs emitted simultaneously in the forward and backward directions. Depending on the charge state of the projectiles in the foil, these probabilities exhibit quite different distributions. The observed difference between the H-0 and H+ penetration can be reproduced quite well by a Monte Carlo simulation assuming the frozen charge state of the projectiles in the foil.   • Development of 4 pi detector to clarify fragmentation dynamics of molecule in collisions with highly charged ions in ultra low energy region

  • Role of loss electrons on forward-backward correlation in electron emission from a thin carbon foil by hydrogen irradiation

    The number distributions of simultaneously emitted secondary electrons (SEs) from a thin carbon foil have been measured for the incidence of neutral hydrogen beams of 0.5-3.5 MeV together with foil-transmitted protons in order to examine the contribution of the loss electrons to the correlation between the forward and backward SE emission. The forward (backward) SE yields gamma(F) (gamma(B)), that is, the mean numbers of the forward-emitted (backward-emitted) electrons per projectile have been evaluated as a function of the number of backward-emitted (forward-emitted) SEs, n(B) (n(F)). At 1.0-2.5 MeV, gamma(F) (gamma(B)) decreases with increasing n(B) (n(F)). On the other hand, the dependence of gamma(F) (gamma(B)) on n(B) (n(F)) becomes slightly complicated at 3.0 and 3.5 MeV.   • Transmission properties of glass capillaries for MeV proton and alpha particles

    In order to clarify the transmission properties of an ion beam extracted with glass capillaries into air, we measured the energy distributions of extracted protons and alpha particles using two kinds of glass capillaries.   • Development of two-dimensional mapping technique by in-air-PIXE with metal capillary

    We have developed the two-dimensional mapping technique with in-air-PIXE (2D-PIXE) using a metal capillary as a guide to extract ion beam to air. The metal capillary is the conventional injection needle with a 2001 mu m inside diameter. For the target which is the character made of the copper wires on aluminum basement, 2D-PIXE measurements were performed by irradiating 3 MeV proton beam. As a result, the character was tend to be restored clearly by this method. We discuss about the result of the two-dimensional map from a viewpoint of the signal-to-noise ratio and the resolution. This technique is expected to be applicable to various fields such as biology, nano-technology, archeology and so on. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V.   • Development of an in-air RBS technique using a metal capillary

    We have developed a simple Rutherford backscattering spectroscopic (RBS) method to analyze sample depth profiles in air. To avoid excessive energy loss of projectile ions in air, we have used a 3 MeV proton beam extracted into air with a metal capillary. Using this capillary, we were able to extract a sufficiently large proton beam current to perform in-air RBS and in-air PIXE without requiring any window, such as a thin film, between a vacuum chamber and air. We have validated our technique by analyzing the depth profiles for Au foils of various thicknesses, 0.25, 0.75, and 2.5 mu m. A comparison of the experimental results with a simple theoretical calculation indicates that this technique is useful for analyzing the depth profile of any specimen in air. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.   • Secondary electron emission from a thin carbon foil induced by equi-velocity protons and electrons of 0.5-3.5 MeV/u

    The statistical distributions of the number of simultaneously forward-emitted secondary electrons (SEs) from a thin carbon foil have been measured with H-0 and H+ projectiles of 0.5-3.5 MeV in coincidence with the foil-transmitted protons, irrespective of projectile incident charge state. From these results, the probabilities of the simultaneous emission of n electrons and the SE yields by loss electrons have been evaluated. At energies of 2.5-3.5 MeV, the obtained emission probabilities and the SE yields induced by loss electrons are larger than the corresponding ones by protons of the same velocity. Furthermore, the material parameter is found to be almost constant and is slightly larger than that for the protons. On the other hand, the forward SE yields by loss electrons is decreasing to zero with decreasing the incident energy. This behavior is consistent with the range-energy relation of electrons in carbon. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V.   • Forward-backward correlation and its incident energy dependence in secondary-electron emission from a thin carbon foil upon proton penetration

    The statistical distributions of the number of simultaneously emitted secondary electrons (SEs) from a carbon foil have been measured with proton beams of 0.5-3.5 MeV. In this experiment, the forward- and backward-emitted SEs have been measured simultaneously with foil-transmitted protons using a digitizer. As a method to examine how the forward and backward SE emissions correlate to each other, the forward (backward) SE yields gamma F (gamma B), that is, the mean number of the forward-emitted (backward-emitted) electrons per projectile, have been evaluated as a function of the number of the backward-emitted (forward-emitted) SEs, n(B) (n(F)). At higher incident energies, gamma F (gamma B) increases with increasing n(B) (n(F)). With decreasing incident energy, this so-called positive correlation becomes weaker and then changes to negative at the lowest incident energy. Although measurements using a slightly thicker foil exhibit just the same trend, the correlation changes from positive to negative at the higher incident energy. For a given foil thickness, the range of the produced binary electron and hence the incident proton energy seems to determine the sign of the correlation. A simple Monte Carlo simulation for the forward and backward SE emission in the present experimental condition can qualitatively reproduce the observed incident-energy dependence of the positive correlation but cannot reproduce the negative one observed at the lower incident energies., 2010年07月, PHYSICAL REVIEW A, 82 (1), 012902, doi;web_of_science

  • Recoil Momentum of Target Ions in Collisions of Ar6++CO2 at Energies Below 300 eV/u

    The collision dynamics and fragmentation process of molecule by highly charged ion impact for single electron capture processes at the low energies below 1 keV/u were studied. The collision energy dependence of the recoil momentum was obtained experimentally and compared it with those calculated by a theoretical model using a deflection function with polarization potential. A fairly good agreement between the measured and calculated results was reached.   • Molecular fragmentation in collisions of Multiply Charged Ion with diatomic molecule at energies below 1 keV/u

    To clarify collision dynamics of the molecular fragmentation involving the charge-asymmetry effects in collisions of slow Multiply Charged Ions (MCIs) with molecules, we have measured the recoil momentum of non-dissociated molecular ions and the branching ratio of molecular fragmentation for single- and multiple-electron capture collisions of MCIs with the diatomic molecule at collision energies below 1 keV/u. The experimental energy dependence of the recoil momentum of molecular ions was in good agreement with the theoretical dependence obtained using the polarization potential at energies below 100 eV/u.   • Forward-backward correlation in secondary electron emission from a thin carbon foil by frozen-charged H+ and H-0 penetration

    The statistical distributions of the number of simultaneously emitted secondary electrons (SE's) from a thin carbon foil have been measured with frozen-charged H-0 and H+ projectiles of 2.5-3.5 MeV. In this experiment, the forward- and backward-emitted electrons have been measured simultaneously together with foil-transmitted particles using a list-mode data taking system in order to investigate their correlation. From the two-dimensional spectra of the emitted SE's, we have derived the probability distributions of the SE emission, P(n(f), n(b)), where n(f) and n(b) represent the number of SE's emitted simultaneously in the forward and backward directions, respectively. Compared with those for the H+ penetration, the emission probabilities for the H-0 penetration exhibit quite different n(f)- and n(b)-dependence. Firstly, P(n(f) = 0; n(b) = 0) takes a remarkably large value. Secondly, among P(n(f), n(b))'s with n(f) + n(b) = (constant), P(n(f) not equal 0, n(b) = 0) and P(n(f) = 0, n(b) not equal 0) become the largest and the second largest probabilities. In contrast, such events that SE's are emitted in both of the forward and backward directions happen with significantly smaller probabilities. These trends are common to all projectile energies measured and seem to be explained by the predominance of the high energy internal SE production for the H-0 penetration due to the screening effect of its bound electron.     To elucidate the collision energy dependence of the recoil momentum of molecular ions after electron transfer, we measure the recoil momentum of non-dissociated molecular ions for single electron capture collisions of Ar6+ with N-2 at collision energies from 7.5 to 240 eV/u. The measured collision energy dependence of the recoil momentum is compared with those obtained by a theoretical calculation using a deflection function with polarization potential.   • Dependence of secondary-electron emission on the emergent angle of frozen-charged H-0 and H+ projectiles penetrating a thin carbon foil

    The statistical distributions of the number of secondary electrons (SEs) emitted per projectile from a thin carbon foil under irradiation with the frozen-charged H-0 and H+ projectiles of 2.5-3.5 MeV have been measured as a function of the emergent angle of projectiles in the range from 0.0 to 2.0 mrad in every 0.5 mrad step. The measurement of SEs was carried out in the forward and the backward directions of the incident beam independently. From 0.0 mrad to similar to 1.0 mrad, the SE yields, that is, the mean number of emitted electrons per incident ion, increase with increasing emergent angle and tend to be saturated at larger angles. This is a common trend, regardless of incident energies and charge states of a projectile and also of emitted directions of SEs. Quantitatively, the saturated SE yields at larger angles for the H+ penetration are about 40-50 % larger than those at 0.0 mrad. On the other hand, the corresponding relative increase for the H-0 penetration reaches as high as similar to 100% or more.   • Observation of transient lattice vacancies produced during high-energy ion irradiation of Ni foils

    Real- time positron annihilation spectroscopy has been applied for the first time for the investigation of lattice vacancies produced during ion irradiation. Measurements were performed for thin nickel foils irradiated with 2.5 MeV C ions. Doppler broadenings of positron annihilation. gamma-rays were measured alternately during beam- on and beam- off conditions. It was found that the Doppler broadening line- shape parameter measured during irradiation is larger than those obtained before and after irradiation. This evidently implies that transient or non- survivable vacancy defects are produced during ion irradiation.   • Dependence of secondary electron emission on the emergent angle of 1 MeV/u H+, He2+ and Li3+ penetrating a thin carbon foil

    With 1 MeV/u H+, He2+ and Li3+ beams incident on a carbon foil of 2.2 mu g/cm(2) in thickness, the statistical distributions of the number of simultaneously emitted secondary electrons (SE's) have been measured as a function of the emergent angle of foil-transmitted ions in the range from 0.0 mrad to 4.0 mrad for every 0.5 mrad step. The measurement of SE's was carried out in the forward and backward directions of the incident beam independently. The SE yields, that is, the mean number of emitted electrons per incident ion, increase with increasing the emergent angle and saturate at larger angles. This trend is common to the projectiles used and also to the forward and backward directions. As a result of a Monte Carlo simulation taking account of the impact parameter dependent energy loss in a single collision of a proton with a carbon atom, it is found that the calculated energy losses exhibit an emergent angular dependence quite similar to that of the measured SE yields. However the measured SE yields divided by the square of the projectile atomic number, Z(p), becomes smaller with increasing Z(p), especially for the backward emission. A similar observation has been reported by other authors and this trend seems to originate from the preferencial fast internal SE production by heavier projectiles followed by their escape from a thin target foil.   • Gas-solid difference in charge-changing cross sections for bare and H-like nickel ions at 200 MeV/u

    It is well known that the density of the target can have a crucial impact on charge-changing collisions of partially ionized heavy ions. However, the basic understanding of this experimental observation is hampered by the difficulty in knowing the charge-state evolution of projectiles inside solids. Therefore, the present experiments with 200 MeV/u bare and H-like nickel ions were performed to study charge-changing cross sections in different monatomic and compound gases and solids. The experimental results clearly demonstrate that the electron-loss cross sections in solids increase by about 40% compared to gases. The results support the Bohr-Lindhard model which predicts this gas-solid difference originating from enhanced ionization of excited ions.   • Energy gain spectroscopy of multiply charged light ions in collisions with hydrogen at 50 eV/u

    We have measured energy gain spectra for single-electron capture collisions of He-like C, N and O ions with H-2 at 50 eV/u. Energy gain spectra were examined with energy gain functions calculated from a classical over barrier model, and we obtained fairly good agreement between experimental and calculated results.   • Mean excitation energies for the stopping power of atoms and molecules evaluated from oscillator-strength spectra

    The mean excitation energy for the stopping power of matter, usually expressed by symbol I, is the only nontrivial material property in Bethe's [Ann. Phys. 5, 325 (1930)] asymptotic stopping-power formula. It is therefore a crucial input for the evaluation of stopping power for swift charged particles. To calculate the I value of a material from its definition, it is necessary to know the oscillator-strength spectrum of the material in question over the entire range of the excitation energy. We evaluate the mean excitation energies of 32 atoms and molecules from the oscillator-strength spectra that were published by Berkowitz in 2002 [Atomic and Molecular Photoabsorption: Absolute Total Cross Sections (Academic, San Diego, 2002)]. We find that most of the present I values are consistent with those given in the literature. The I values of NO2, O-3, and C-60 in particular are evaluated in the present work. For buckminsterfullerene C-60, an estimation of the I value is made also using the local-plasma approximation, in an attempt at understanding differences in the I values of carbon in a free atom, a C-60 molecule, and graphite. Systematic trends of I values obtained in the present calculation are discussed, in the context of the Thomas-Fermi model.   • Elemental depth profiling of a-Si1-xGex : H films by elastic recoil detection analysis and secondary ion mass spectrometry

    The hydrogen content in a-Si1-xGex:H thin films is an important factor deciding the density and the optical band gap. We measured the elemental depth profiles of hydrogen together with Si and Ge by elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) combined with Rutherford backscattering (RBS) using MeV He2+ ions. In order to determine the hydrogen depth profiles precisely, the energy- and angle-dependent recoil cross-sections were measured in advance for the standard sample of a CH(3)(+-)implanted Si substrate. The cross-sections obtained here are reproduced well by a simple expression based on the partial wave analysis assuming a square well potential (width: r(0) = 2.67 x 10(-13) cm, depth: V-0 = - 36.9 MeV) within 1%. For the aSi(1-x)Ge(x):H films whose elemental compositions were determined by ERDA/RBS, we measured the secondary ions yields of HCS2+, SiCs2+, H-, Si- and Ge- as a function of Ge concentration x. As a result, it is found that the useful yield ratios of HC2+/SiCs2+, H-/Si- and G(-)/Si- are almost constant and thus the elemental depth profiles of the a-Si1-xGex:H films can be also determined by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) within 10% free from a matrix effect.   • Gas-solid effect in mean charge and slowing down of uranium ions at 60.2 and 200 MeV/u

    Charge-state distributions and energy-loss measurements of uranium ions in gases and solids at incident energies of 60.2 and 200 MeV/u were performed with the magnetic spectrometer FRS at GSI Darmstadt. The charge distribution was investigated in various gases and solids. We observed a gas-solid effect in ionization and mean charge. This effect arises from the shorter collision time in solids comparable with the lifetimes of the excited states of the projectile.   • Thermo-elastic deformation of a titanium foil by ion irradiation

    Experimental results were presented for elastic deformation of a titanium foil by MeV ion irradiation. In situ observations of the deformation have been performed by using a laser displacement meter. In order to Study time-evolution of the deformation, the foils were irradiated with short-pulsed ion beams. We found that the deformation occurs by piling Lip of small deformation generated by one bunch of pulsed beams. We also investigated the magnitude of deformation as a function of beam flux.   • Radiative and non-radiative electron capture from carbon atoms by relativistic helium ions

    Interaction of radiation with helium atoms and/or ions is of interest in various astrophysical applications. The reverse reactions of fast 150 MeV/amu (3)He(++) ions with solid C targets have been studied at the isochronous cyclotron of the RCNP in Osaka. The singly ionized helium ions resulting from capture of the target electrons to the projectile were observed with the use of large magnetic spectrograph, Grand Raiden, set at theta = 0 degrees with respect to the beam. The yield ratios of singly-to-doubly ionized helium ions emerging from thin carbon foils, He(+)/He(++), have been measured as a function of the foil thickness. Extrapolating the results to zero target thickness permits to determine the cross section values separately for electron stripping from (3)He(+) ions and for electron capture to (3)He(++) ions. The radiative and non-radiative contributions to the capture cross section were determined in a separate experiment in which the 84 keV (C.M.) photons were observed in coincidence with the He(+) ejectiles. The results are compared with theoretical predictions.   • Charge exchange processes for semi-relativistic helium ions (beta=0.51) in solid gold

    Interactions of 150 MeV/amu He-3(++) projectiles with solid gold targets have been studied at the isochronous cyclotron of the RCNP in Osaka. The He-3(+) ions resulting from capture of the target electrons to the projectile were observed with the use of large magnetic spectrograph, Grand Raiden, set at theta = 0 degrees with respect to the beam. The yield ratio of singly to doubly ionized helium ions emerging from thin gold foils, He+/He++, has been measured as a function of the foil thickness. Extrapolating the results to zero Au target thickness permits to determine the cross section values for electron stripping from He-3(+) ions, sigma(STRIP) = 1.05 x 10(-17) cm(2), and for electron capture to He-3(++) ions, sigma(CAP) = 1.12 x 10(-25) cm(2). The results obtained extend significantly the existing systematics for both processes to high (semi-relativistic) velocities. The collision strength deduced from the stripping cross sections deviates strongly from the theoretical predictions of Gillespie in absolute values as well as in the velocity dependence. It can, however, be well approximated by the simple Bohr formula for mid Z atoms. Also the capture data indicate the need to improve the theoretical approximations. A more detailed treatment of electrons captured from different shells in a high Z target is presumably needed. The astrophysical interest in the data of this kind for very light ions (hydrogen, helium) is indicated. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.   • In situ observation of reversible deformation of Al foils during irradiation with MeV-energy ions

    Ion-irradiation-induced reversible deformation of Al foils has been studied using various MeV energy projectile ions of H+, C2+, C3+, O2+, O3+, Si3+, and Si4+. To find the source causing this foil-deformation, we performed systematic investigations from various aspects. It was found that the electronic energy deposition is the dominant driving force of deformation, and the deformation occurs at temperatures much below the recrystallization temperature of 200degreesC. Experimental results were analyzed in terms of conventional thermal models.   • Energy losses and straggling of 10 MeV/amu C-5+,C-4+ ions in charge state non-equilibrium region

    It was found that the energy loss straggling of 10 MeV/amu He-3(1+) and Li-6(2+) ions transmitted through thin carbon foils exhibits a bump structure at the foil-thickness region where the charge-changed H-like component becomes comparable to the frozen-charged one. This characteristic behavior could be reproduced well by a Monte Carlo simulation taking account of the electron loss and capture processes. An abrupt increase of the straggling values were also observed for C-12(5+) and C-12(4+). In order to improve a quantitative understanding, not only the attenuation of H-like and He-like beams as a function of the foil thickness but also the electron-captured fractions for the incidence of bare and H-like beams have been measured and charge changing cross sections among the bare, H-like and He-like charge states are evaluated. A computer simulation taking account of charge exchanges can reproduce quite well the measured energy losses and straggling of partially clothed C ions in the thicker foils. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V.   • Dependence of secondary electron emission on the emergent angle of 2.5-MeV protons penetrating a thin carbon foil

    With 2.5-MeV proton beams incident on a carbon foil of 1.8 mug/cm(2) in thickness, the statistical distributions of the number of simultaneously emitted secondary electrons (SEs) have been measured as a function of the emergent angle of ions penetrating the foil in the range from 0.0 mrad to 2.0 mrad for every 0.5-mrad step. The measurement of SEs was carried out at the forward and backward directions of the incident beam separately. For all of the measured angles, the probability of simultaneous n electron emission per projectile, W-n, exhibits roughly an exponential decrease with increasing n. Up to similar to1 mrad, however, the decreasing rate becomes smaller with an increase in the emergent angle. On the other hand, W-n reaches saturation at larger angles. This behavior is common to the forward and backward SE emission. In terms of this angular dependence, the average SE yields per projectile at the forward direction, gamma(F), and at the backward direction, gamma(B), increase as high as about 50% at 1.0 mrad compared with corresponding ones at 0.0 mrad and saturate at larger angles.   • Energy losses and straggling of light ions transmitted through thin carbon foils

    The energy losses of 10 MeV/amu He-3(2+,1+), Li-6(3+,2+), C-12(6+,5+,4+) and O-16(8+,7+,6+,5+) ions passing through carbon foils of 5-110 mug/cm(2) in thickness were measured with a high resolution magnetic spectrograph. The measurement was carried out for ions emerging from foils in the same charge state as the incident beam. The measured fixed-charge stopping powers have been reported in our previous papers. In this paper, the energy loss straggling of partially clothed ions in the charge-state nonequilibrium region is reported for the first time. A double peak structure in energy loss spectra of He-3(1+) and Li-6(2+) ions transmitted through carbon foils of 40-50 mug/cm(2), which is due to charge changing contributions, was also described before. The present study shows that these contributions also bring about a characteristic behavior in the foil thickness dependence of the straggling values. For partially clothed C and O ions, a linear relation between the foil thickness and the straggling does not hold in the thicker foil region and the straggling exhibits an abrupt increase, although the double peak structure did not appear in the energy loss spectra. A Monte Carlo simulation taking account of the charge exchange can well reproduce the energy loss straggling of He-3(1+) and Li-6(2+) emerging from thicker foils. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.   • Angular distribution of 2.5-MeV H-0 atoms transmitted through a thin carbon foil in frozen charge state

    With 2.5-MeV H-0 beams incident on a carbon foil of 3.0 mug/cm(2) in thickness, the ratios of the emergent to the incident H-0 atoms have been measured in the angular range from 0 to 4 mrad every 0.5 mrad step. Evaluating from charge changing cross-sections involved, more than 98% of the emergent Ho atoms are those suffering no charge changing collisions in the foil. The frozen-charged H-0 gives a slightly narrower angular distribution compared with that measured with H+ beams of the same energy. A Monte Carlo simulation can reproduce very well the experimental results.   • Secondary-electron emission from thin carbon foils by H-0 and H+ in frozen-charge states

    The statistical distributions of the number of simultaneously emitted secondary electrons (SE's) from a thin carbon foil induced by the frozen-charged H-0 and H+ projectiles of 2.5-3.5 MeV have been measured by using the coincidence technique with the foil-transmitted particles. The measurement was carried out at the forward and backward directions of the incident beam separately. For frozen-charged H-0, the average SE yields per projectile at the forward direction, gamma(F), and at the backward direction, gamma(B), are significantly smaller than the corresponding ones for H+ due to the screening effect of its bound electron. In addition to the suppression of low-energy electron production for H-0, the preferential forward emission of high-energy electrons makes the proton-hydrogen difference in the ratio of gamma(B) to the stopping power more striking. Although the probability of simultaneous n electron emission per unit projectile, W-n, for H-0 is significantly smaller than that for H+ at small n, their difference decreases with increasing n both at the forward and backward directions. This behavior of W-n also suggests that there is not a large proton-hydrogen difference in the production of high-energy electrons. As a result of a simple model calculation, the difference between the emission statistics by H+ and H-0 can be well reproduced by a Poisson distribution with a mean equal to the difference of their gamma(F) or gamma(B) values and the validity of the above-mentioned interpretation on the proton-hydrogen difference of the SE emission is quantitatively confirmed., 2002年05月, PHYSICAL REVIEW A, 65 (5), 052902, doi;web_of_science

  • Direct measurement of a beam force exerted to a foil with a laser displacement meter

    The interaction of a beam with a target foil is studied using a torsion balance. The change in equilibrium angle of the target frame due to momentum transfer of the projectile was measured by a laser displacement meter. The thick foil result can be interpreted in a straightforward way. The deformation was measured systematically using a laser displacement meter with accuracy of 0.1 mum, as a function of the incident beam current ranging from 1 to 200 nA for two different foil thickness of 2 and 5 Lm foils. Protrusive deformation profile was observed only within the beam spot size. The deformation was found to be completely elastic without hysteresis and was independent of the beam current. The deformation was increases linearly as the beam current increases up to 10 nA, above which it increases more rapidly. The surface expansion for a given foil is saturated at some beam current.   • Electron loss and capture cross-sections of 1.0-3.5 MeV H-0 and H+ in carbon foils

    The attenuation of H-0 beam transmitted thin carbon foils of 2-20 mu g/cm(2) in thickness was measured in the incident energy range from 1.0 to 3.5 MeV. Considering two components of H-0 in the ground state and HI, the electron loss cross-sections of Ho and the electron capture cross-sections of H+ were derived from the measured foil-thickness dependence of the transmitted H-0 yields. Both the present electron loss and electron capture cross-sections are larger than those obtained below 2.4 MeV with quite similar experimental methods by Gaillard et al. The present results are also slightly larger than the values below 2.5 MeV derived by applying an additivity rule to the measured charge changing cross-sections with various carbon-containing gas targets by Toburen et al. The theoretical prediction based on the Born approximation by Gillespie is found to give an excellent agreement with our electron loss cross-sections. As for the electron capture cross-section, although the OBK approximation gives slightly larger values, it can well reproduce the obtained incident energy dependence. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.   • Stopping powers of Ti for protons from 0.2 to 13.5 MeV: Correction for the actual path length due to multiple scattering

    Stopping powers of Ti were measured for protons from 0.2 to 13.5 MeV. The uncertainty of the present results was estimated to be +/-0.40%. Although the present results agreed well with our previous result measured at 6.5 MeV, they were 1-2% smaller than those measured by Andersen et al. and 0.5-4% smaller than compilation values of ICRU Report 49. Analyzing the present results with the Bethe-Bloch formula with corrections, we could obtain the information on the lowest energy; beyond that we could not apply the formula to describe stopping powers. In order to obtain precise experimental values at low energies, we paid special attention to the effect of the enlargement of an actual path length over a target thickness. We measured angular distributions due to multiple scattering for 26 kinds of target thickness and incident energy combinations. In these cases energy losses of protons ranged from 1.3 to 62% of their initial energies. We found that angular distributions were excellently reproduced by both Moliere's theory and the theory of Sigmund and Winterbon. Therefore, we could conclude that these theories gave a reliable evaluation of the correction for the actual path length. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.   • Emergent-angle-dependent charge-state distributions of 2-MeV He-4 transmitted through a thin carbon foil

    The emergent-angle-dependent charge-state fractions of 2-MeV He-4 transmitted in a carbon foil of 2.5 mu g/cm(2) in thickness have been measured in the range from 0 to 8 mrad. The angular distribution due to multiple scattering has been also obtained for each outgoing charge state. Up to the angle of similar to 4 mrad, both the neutral and singly charged fractions increase with increasing the emergent angle. This trend is more remarkable in the neutral fraction. At the larger angles, these fractions reach saturated values. The observed behavior can be explained qualitatively by the impact parameter dependence of the charge-exchange probabilities.   • Stopping powers of Al and Mo for protons from 0.3 to 3.0 MeV

    Stopping powers of Al and Mo have been measured for protons in the respective energy ranges of 0.3-3.0 and 0.4- 3.0 MeV with a surface barrier silicon detector. The uncertainty of the present results is +/-0.35%. Above 0.8 MeV the present results for Al agree well with the Aarhus data of Anderson et al. [Phys. Rev. A 16 (1977) 1929] and the tabulated values of ICRU Report 49 (Stopping Powers and Ranges for Protons and Alpha Particles (International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements, 1993)) (ICRU values). Below 0.8 MeV, however, ratios of the present data for Al to ICRU values show a slight decrease with decreasing proton energy. The decrease amounts to similar to 1% at 0.3 MeV. In the case of Mo the ratios also decrease with decreasing proton energy below 2.0 MeV. The decrease reaches similar to 8% at around the lowest energy, 0.4 MeV. Because the Bethe-Bloch formula is known to well reproduce stopping powers for protons above similar to 1 MeV, the mean excitation energies, the I values, of Al and Mo have been extracted from the results for 1-3 MeV protons.   • Equilibrium charge distributions of lithium ions emerging from a carbon foil

    Equilibrium charge distributions of lithium ions passing through a carbon foil have been measured in the energy range 1-6 MeV. Average equilibrium charges (q) over bar are found to connect smoothly with previous high energy data above 6 MeV. It was found that the present results of both charge fractions and (q) over bar can be well reproduced by the empirical calculations based on the independent electron model. We also found that available semiempirical formulae for (q) over bar cannot reproduce the present experimental data at all.   • Stopping powers of N-2 and O-2 for protons from 4.0 to 13.0 MeV

    Stopping powers of N-2 and O-2 for protons from 4.0 to 13.0 MeV were measured with an accuracy of +/-0.8% using a surface barrier silicon detector set inside a sealed gas cell. Energy loss in the gases was obtained from the peak shift of the proton pulse heights measured separately with and without gas filling. One-half of the experimental data obtained for molecules N-2 and O-2 was compared with that of experimental data for 4.4 MeV protons reported by Brolley and Ribe [Phys. Rev. 98 (1955)1112], the calculated values given in ICRU Report 49 [Stopping Powers and Ranges for Protons and Alpha Particles (International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements, 1993)], and the values calculated by Andersen and Ziegler's formula [Hydrogen Stopping Powers and Ranges in All Elements (Pergamon, New York, 1977)] for atoms N and O. By analyzing the experimental results with the modified Bethe-Bloch formula that includes the Parkas correction term, we extracted the mean excitation energies, the I values, for N and O.   • Electron loss cross sections of high velocity H-like ions in carbon

    The attenuation of hydrogen atoms and H-like He, Li, C and O ions of about 10-MeV/amu due to the electron loss collisions in thin carbon foils was measured as a function of foil thickness. At the thinner foil region, the incident beams attenuated exponentially as the foil thickness increased. From the attenuation rates, we have determined the electron loss cross sections of the ground slate H-like ions. The obtained cross sections are larger than the theoretical predictions based on the Born approximation, especially for projectiles of higher atomic number. They can be well explained quantitatively taking account of the contribution from the projectile excitation which leads to the ionization by the subsequent collision in the foils.   • Stopping powers of havar for protons from 0.45 to 3.0 MeV

    Stopping powers of havar (a cobalt based alloy) for protons from 0.45 to 3.0 MeV have been measured with an uncertainty of +/-0.35% using the accelerator at Nara Women's University. The results agree fairly well with experimental data reported by Duder et al. [J.C. Duder, J.F. Glare, H. Naylor, Nucl. Instr, and Meth. 123 (1975) 89] within the uncertainties. The results also have been compared with the calculated stopping power values obtained by Bragg's additivity rule using the stopping power values for constituent elements calculated by Janni [J.F. Janni, At. Data Nucl. Data Tables 27 (1982) 147] and by Andersen and Ziegler's formula [H.H. Andersen, J.F. Ziegler, Hydrogen Stopping Powers and Ranges in All Elements, Pergamon Press, New York, 1977]. Applying the modified Bethe-Bloch formula for the stopping power of compounds assuming the validity of Bragg's additivity rule, we extracted an effective mean excitation energy, I value, for havar from the stopping power data.   • Stopping powers of titanium for He-4 ions from 1.0 to 20.5 MeV

    Stopping powers of titanium have been measured for He-4 ions from 1.0 to 20.5 MeV. The accuracy of the results is estimated to be +/-0.35%. Measured stopping powers are analyzed with the Bethe-Bloch formula which contains the shell and the Barkas corrections. The shell corrections are calculated with Bonderup's theory. In the higher energy region He-4 ions are fully stripped of their electrons, whereas in the lower energy region the existence of partially stripped ions should be considered. The I-value of titanium is determined so that the Bethe-Bloch formula can best reproduce stopping powers measured at above 15 MeV where He-4 ions are safely assumed to bring no electron. Effective charges of He-4 ions are extracted on the basis of the I-value. The present I-value is compared with those of other authors. The effective charge of He-4 ions obtained is also discussed.   • Energy loss of 10 MeV/amu atomic helium in carbon

    Mean energy losses of 31.8 MeV neutral 3He atoms penetrating through thin carbon foils of 1.6-7.2 μg/cm2 were measured using a high-resolution magnetic spectrograph. The measured particles are those entered into the carbon foil as 3He0 and emerged from it as 3He0. From the attenuation measurement of 3He0 in the foils, we can regard the measured energy losses as those of 3He0 in a frozen charge state. The measured stopping power of carbon for 31.8 MeV 3He0 is 58.2 ± 4.9 eV/μg/cm2.   • Stopping powers of mylar for protons from 0.40 to 3.25 MeV

    Stopping powers of mylar have been measured for protons of 0.40 to 3.25 MeV from the accelerator at Nara Women's University. The experimental setup and procedure are quite similar to those of the previous experiments [e.g., Nucl. Instr. and Meth. B 103 (1995) 225; Nucl. Instr, and Meth. B 47 (1990) 111]. The results agree well with the calculated values of the ICRU Report 49 for protons above 1.50 MeV. For protons under 1.50 MeV, however, our results are higher as the energies decrease. The mean excitation energy, viz., the I-value, for mylar has been extracted from the measured stopping power data. The I-values extracted with Bonderup's [K. Dan. Vidensk. Selsk. Mat. Fys. Medd. 35 (1967) no. 17] and Bichsel's [UCRL Report No. 17538 (1967); ICRU Report 37 (1984)] shell corrections are 81.7 and 80.8 eV, respectively, and agree well within their uncertainties. They are also in good agreement with the previous I-values of 80.8 and 80.2 eV [Nucl. Instr. and Meth. B 103 (1995) 255] obtained from measurements at 4.0-11.5 MeV with the respective shell corrections and also with the value recommended in ICRU Reports 37 and 49, 78.7 eV, the uncertainty of which is stated to be 5-10%.   • Measurements of energy losses of 10-MeV neutral hydrogen atoms in carbon foils

    Mean energy losses of 10.4-MeV neutral hydrogen atoms penetrated through thin carbon foils of 3.7-13.4 mu g/cm(2) were measured using a high-resolution magnetic spectrograph. The measured particles are those entered into the carbon foil as H-0 and emerged from it as H-0. From the attenuation measurement of H-0 in the foils, we can regard the energy losses as those of H-0 in a frozen charge state. The measured stopping power of carbon for 10.4-MeV H-0 is 21.3+/-1.8 eV/(mu g/cm(2)) and is about one-half that for H+ at the same speed.     Stopping powers of havar have been measured with an uncertainty of +/-0.35% for protons from 4.0 to 13.0 MeV. Experimental results have been compared with calculated stopping powers obtained by Bragg's additivity rule [W.H. Bragg and R.K. Kleeman, Philos. Mag. 10 (1905) 318] using the stopping-power values for constituent elements calculated by Andersen and Ziegler's formula [Hydrogen Stopping Powers and Ranges in All Elements (Pergamon, New York, 1977)]. The calculated values agree with the experimental results within the stated uncertainty. Applying the modified Bethe-Bloch formula including the Barkas term for the stopping power of compounds, the mean excitation energy, viz., the I-value, for havar has been extracted from the experimental results. In this analysis, we used the theory of Ashley et al. [Phys. Rev. B 5 (1972) 2393; Phys. Rev. A 8 (1973) 2402] to estimate the Barkas correction and Bonderup's [K. Dan. Vidensk. Selsk. Mat. Fys. Medd. 35 (1967) no.17] and Bichsel's [UCRL Report No. 17538 (1967);ICRU Report 37 (1984)] shell corrections. With Bonderup's shell correction, the I-value is 292.4 +/- 6.7 eV; with Bichsel's shell correction 296.9 +/- 7.5 eV.   • Stopping powers of Ta and Mo for MeV protons

    The stopping powers of Ta and Mo were measured respectively for protons of 4.5-20.0 MeV and 4.0-12.5 MeV, with an accuracy of +/-0.3%. The results for Mo agree very well with the calculated values in ICRU Report 49. By analyzing the experimental results using the modified Bethe-Bloch formula including the Barkas correction, we deduced the mean excitation energy, the I value. In this analysis, we used the Barkas correction of Ashley, Ritchie and Brandt and Bonderup's and Bichsel's shell corrections for the shell correction. The I values, respectively obtained with the Bonderup and Bichsel shell corrections, were 685.1 +/- 30.2 eV and 743.1 +/- 24.8 eV for Ta and 420.3 +/- 14.8 eV and 426.9 +/- 13.4 eV for Mo. These two I values for Ta differ and the Bonderup shell correction does not fit the experimental data well.     Stopping powers of carbon (graphite) have been measured for 4-13 MeV protons. The accuracy of the results is estimated to be +/-0.35%. Analyzing the present stopping powers with the usual Bethe-Bloch formula, we have extracted the mean excitation energy, I, of carbon atoms. To estimate the shell correction we used both Bichsel's method and Bonderup's theory. The Barkas correction was evaluated by the theory of Ashley, Ritchie and Brandt. The I-values obtained are 79.6 eV for Bichsel's shell correction and 80.1 eV for Bonderup's shell correction.   • STOPPING POWERS OF MYLAR FOR PROTONS FROM 4 TO 11.5 MEV

    The stopping powers of Mylar for 4-11.5 MeV protons have been measured with an uncertainty of +/-0.35%. The present results have been compared with experimental values obtained by Rauhala and Raisanen [Nucl. Instr. and Meth. B 35 (1988) 130] and with calculated values of the ICRU Report 49 and Janni [At. Data Nucl. Data Tables 27 (1982) 147]. These values agree well with each other within stated uncertainties. Requiring that experimental stopping powers are best reproduced by the Bethe-Bloch formula, we have extracted the mean excitation energy, I-value, for Mylar from the present results. In this analysis, we used the theory of Ashley et al. [Phys. Rev. B 5 (1972) 2393; Phys. Rev. A 8 (1973) 2402] for the estimation of the Parkas correction and regarded the I-value as an adjustable parameter. The I-values obtained are 80.2 eV if we adopted Bichsel's shell correction [UCRL Report No. 17538 (1967)] and 80.8 eV when we used Bonderup's shell correction [K. Dan. Vidensk. Selsk. Mat. Fys. Medd. 35 (1967) no. 17]. Considering the accuracy of theories this discrepancy is not physically significant. The present I-values agree well with the recommended value of 78.7 eV in the ICRU Reports 37 and 49 but disagree with the value of 75.3+/-1.1 eV which Hiraoka et al. [Med.   • GEOMETRICAL EFFECT ON THE MEASUREMENT OF STOPPING POWER - ANGLE-DEPENDENT ENERGY-LOSS 5 MEV PROTONS IN CU

    The angle-dependent energy loss of 5 MeV protons has been measured for a Cu target which has good thickness uniformity. In order to examine the effect of target texture, measurements were performed for three different target angles. Energy loss was found to show substantially the same angular dependence regardless of target tilt angles. The present results are hence proved to be free from serious influence of target texture. Energy loss increased by up to about 1.5% with increasing emergence angle and seemed to be saturated at angles larger than 2.5-degrees. The effect of thickness nonuniformity was too small to reproduce the observed angle-dependent energy loss. The relation between angle-dependent energy losses due to thickness nonuniformity and the true geometrical effect is discussed.   • PRODUCTION OF CONVOY ELECTRONS BY FOIL-EXCITED HE IONS

    Convoy electrons are studied, which are produced by the transmission of 50 MeV He-3(2+) ions through two thin foils of carbon, where the downstream foil is exposed to the beam transmitted through the upstream foil. By eliminating the convoy electrons emitted from the upstream foil by applying an electric field, the convoy electrons produced at the downstream foil are studied. The yields of convoy electrons produced at the downstream foil, which has a thickness of less than the mean free path for convoy electrons (approximately 3-mu-g/cm2), are about twice as large as those emitted from a single foil of the same thickness.     The energy loss of 32-MeV He-3 ions passing through carbon foils of 2-100-mu-g/cm2 thickness was measured with use of a high-resolution magnetic spectrograph. The measurement was made for ions emerging in the same charge state as the incident beam. Energy-loss spectra of He-3(1+) for thinner foils showed a single peak, while for thicker foils two peaks appeared. From energy-loss spectra with a single peak, the fixed-charge stopping power of carbon for He-3(1+) at 20.7-upsilon-0 a.u. was deduced.
