  • Refereed, E3S Web of Conferences, EDP Sciences, Optimal Design Method for Surface Shape of Exterior Material to Improve Thermal Environment in Streets, Kako Futaoka; Shinji Yoshida, Retro-reflective materials have garnered attention as a countermeasure against heat island phenomena. However, the existing materials are inadequate for improving the thermal environment of outdoor spaces because these have been developed for traffic signs. Hence, in this study, an optimal design method for near-infrared rays retro-reflective materials to be installed on the exterior surfaces of buildings is proposed. It consists of a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) coupled with numerical analysis based on a ray tracing method. First, the outline of the method is shown. Next, the investigation of optimized surface shapes is presented. The results show that in individuals with high summer reflective performance, most of solar radiation hits a surface element only once and reflects upward in summer. In the investigation, the elevation angles of surface elements were approximately 70° and 60° for the installations in the south and west, respectively. It is predicted that the normal of the surface element where solar radiation reaches first is one of the determinants of the summer reflective performance. In addition, the effect of installation city or direction on the optimal design is analyzed. The results show that the direction does not significantly affect, the city suggests to affect the optimal design., 16 Jun. 2023, 396, 05004, 05004, International conference proceedings, 10.1051/e3sconf/202339605004
  • Refereed, E3S Web of Conferences, EDP Sciences, Evaluation on present situations of safety on thermal environment in residential houses in Japanese winter season using BEST-H program, Shinji Yoshida, In this paper, the present situations on the safety of thermal environment in residential houses in winter season were evaluated by using the BEST-H program, a computation tool for analysing the thermal load in residential houses. In this analysis, the climate conditions for each primary division area in Japan were imposed to the input conditions for the thermal load computations. We also evaluated the safety of thermal environment with the hazard rate for both the cardiac and the brain diseases from the combination between the computational results using the BEST-H program and the several statistical data. Through the investigations, the following two findings were obtained: (1) the proposed method was validated for the evaluation of the safety on the thermal environment in the residential houses in winter season by comparing the computational results with the statistical data from the Population Survey Report in Japan.: (2) More houses with suitable insulation performance should be established in the western area and northern part of the Kanto area in Japan. The near future direction of our study is to evaluate variable countermeasures, such as one-room insulation., 16 Jun. 2023, 396, 01026, 01026, International conference proceedings, 10.1051/e3sconf/202339601026

The numerical analysis was conducted under the meteorological conditions of a particular hot summer in Tokyo using a computational method proposed by the present authors. The computational method was based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis coupled with radiant computation, unsteady heat conduct computation, and human thermoregulation computation for pedestrians. Two different types of windows installed in the western building surface were compared: (1) single float glass with a heat ray retro-reflective film, and (2) single float glass with heat shading film. Through comparison, it was clarified that adopting the heat ray retro-reflective film on the building surface improved the radiant and the outdoor thermal environment during the summer. Following the estimation of the angle factors between the surrounding walls and the human body parts using the projected area factors in the previous paper, this paper describes a calculation procedure for the radiative heat fluxes to the body parts from the surrounding walls. In addition, it is shown that this numerical method can be extended to the estimation of the total radiative heat transfer to the targeted body parts, including the radiative heat fluxes from other body parts. Through a case study of a nonuniform radiative field in an indoor space, the effect of the proposed methodology, which includes the introduction of the projected area factors, consideration of obstacles, etc., on the evaluation results of the radiative heat flux to each part of the human body is discussed. Furthermore, an example evaluation of asymmetric radiative environments of an indoor space is carried out by arranging a number of human models with different postures, sizes, and directions on the floor. The results demonstrate that detailed discussions concerning radiative fields and thermal effects on human body parts anywhere in the room can be made by using the proposed analysis method., 2015, 40, 214, 9, 17, 10.18948/shase.40.214_9
  • Refereed, Transactions of the Society of Heating,Air-conditioning and Sanitary Engineers of Japan, The Society of Heating, Air-Conditioning & Sanitary Engineers of Japan, Evaluation of Radiative Heat Transfer to Human Body in Indoor Space using Projected Area Factors for Each Part of Human Body : Part 1-Estimation of Projected Area Factors using Human Shape Model and Evaluation of Angle Factors for Closely Located Walls, SATO Taiki; OGURO Masayuki; YOSHIDA Shinji, The planning of living spaces under conditions of non-uniform thermal radiant fields requires a detailed analysis of radiative heat transfer to each part of the human body. However, at the same time, it is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of the thermal radiation environment for the entire space. This evaluation requires the computation of heat transfer to the entire body to provide an accurate distribution. Thus, an analysis method that is not computationally demanding has to be developed. The parallel projected area factor has been used as an analysis method of the angle factor between the whole human body and the surrounding walls. Compared with direct calculations of the angle factor of the differential areas of the body surface, this method significantly reduces computational effort. In this study, this method based on the projected area factor is extended to each part of the body by subdividing the whole body into 17 parts. This extension provides the evaluation of each part of the human body at a reduced computational load. However, this method needs a large number of photographs to develop a database of the projected area factors, and the angle factor may not be sufficiently accurate when the distance between the body and a wall is very small when the angle factor is calculated for the whole human body at once. In the present work, the databases are quickly developed using a 3D model of the human body. Moreover, it is confirmed that this subdividing method can be applied to closely located walls, for e.g., 0.5 m apart., 2014, 39, 202, 1, 9, 10.18948/shase.39.202_1

  • Refereed, Visualization in Engineering, A Heatstroke Prediction and Prevention System for Outdoor Construction Workers, Nobuyoshi Yabuki; Takuya Onoue; Tomohiro Fukuda; Shinji Yoshida, © 2013, Yabuki et al.; licensee Springer. Background: Recently, the number of heatstroke cases is increasing among construction workers. To prevent heatstroke at construction sites, it is necessary to accurately predict both the thermal environment of construction sites and the physiological condition of workers, which is presently difficult to achieve. Methods: We have therefore developed the Construction Workers’ Heatstroke Prevention (CWHP) system specifically for outdoor construction workers. The CWHP system consists of the Thermal Environment Prediction (TEP) system, which predicts changes in the thermal environment based on forecast values obtained from the Japan Meteorological Agency and results of computational fluid dynamics and solar insolation simulations, and the Core Body Temperature Prediction (CBTP) system, which predicts changes in worker core body temperature based on the TEP system results. The CWHP’s heatstroke risk notification system indicates the risk of worker heatstroke considering the work site and schedule, so that construction managers can appropriately schedule work or install appropriate facilities such as tents, electric fans, and cold water tanks before work starts. The system is flexible enough to accommodate situations differing from meteorological agency forecasts. Results: In summer 2011 the CWHP system was applied at Osaka University campus under hypothetical situations using the Virtual Reality Avatar Thermal Environment (VRATE) system, previously developed by the authors. Conclusions: The system accurately predicted the time history of construction worker core body temperatures and informed users of times of heatstroke risk, allowing work sites and worker schedules to be modified such that new plans showed no risk for that day., Oct. 2013, 1, 11, 1, 16, Scientific journal, 10.1186/2213-7459-1-11

  • Refereed, JOURNAL OF WIND ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL AERODYNAMICS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, Analysis of regional characteristics of the atmospheric heat balance in the Tokyo metropolitan area in summer, Taiki Sato; Shuzo Murakami; Ryozo Ooka; Shinji Yoshida, The heat island phenomenon in the Tokyo metropolitan area has spread ever more widely, and it is now too wide to treat as a single regional phenomenon. In this paper, the authors have analyzed the climate on an urban scale in summer, and compared the regional characteristics of the atmospheric heat balance at the center of Tokyo, an inland satellite city, and a satellite city on the other side of Tokyo Bay, using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. From the results of the analysis, the authors quantitatively demonstrate the mechanism of diurnal change in air temperature and absolute humidity in these areas, focusing on the heat balance. While the sea breeze prevents the air temperature from increasing in the center of Tokyo, it is less effective as a heat sink in leeward areas, such as the inland satellite city. At the satellite city on the other side of Tokyo Bay, the horizontal wind has some influence on the climate. Additionally, the authors tried to classify the regional characteristic of air temperatures by average air temperature and diurnal range. This paper describes a method to evaluate the shading effect of street tree on solar radiation based on field observation. In former part of this paper, the method to estimate parameters for evaluating the shading effect of tree crown on solar radiation is described. Using data from field observations of the amount of global solar radiation, solar radiant transmittance of tree crown, and sky view factor, we estimate leaf area density, optical length, and 'ak', that is the product of leaf area density and extinction coefficient, in this study. In the latter part of this paper, the authors evaluate the 'ak' of street trees in Fukui city, and examine the disposition of leaves in tree crown by the data from field observations of azimuth of leaves, inclination of leaves, and tree height. By these examinations, it is clarified that 'ak' is affected by tree species and growth of street tree., 2006, 71, 605, 103, 110, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aije.71.103_2
  • Refereed, Journal of Environmental Engineering (Transactions of AIJ), Architectural Institute of Japan, STUDY ON URBAN CLIMATE ANALYSIS BASED ON MESO-SCALE CLIMATE MODEL INCORPORATED WITH THE URBAN CANOPY MODEL, HARAYAMA Kazuya; OOKA Ryozo; MURAKAMI Shuzo; YOSHIDA Shinji; SETOJIMA Masahiro; KONDO Hiroaki, Three-dimensional meteorological meso-scale model is often used to solve the mechanism of urban heat island. On the meso-scale analysis, one-dimensional heat balance model is used mainly as ground boundary conditions. However it is necessary to include the effects of building canopy exactly in order to analyze thermal environment at pedestrian level in urban area. On the other hand, one-dimensional urban canopy model is also used commonly to analyze urban climate. This model can predict thermal environment at pedestrian level easily. However it is impossible to analyze three-dimensional property of climate including effects of advection and diffusion by this model due to the assumption of horizontally homogeneous flow and temperature field. In this paper, meteorological meso-scale model is incorporated with the urban canopy model as the boundary conditions. The 3D detailed digital map information is utilized for representing the building canopy model. The urban thermal environment in Tokyo metropolitan area is analyzed by means of this new method proposed here and the structure of urban heat island is clarified., 2005, 592, 75-82, 75, 82, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aije.70.75_3

The samples were collected with gravitational settlement method and also with an 8stage-type Andersen sampler. During March through the beginning of April, the concentration of cedar pollen was 1.5〜0.5 grains/m^3 in 2003, and 0.4〜0.3 grains/m^3 in 2004. The allergen Cry j1 concentration was 8.0〜1.8pg/m^3 in 2003, and bellow 1.6pg/m^3 in 2004. From the comparison of the particulate count of cedar pollen and cedar pollen allergen level in each height of gravitational settle plate position, we reached the conclusion that there existed allergen particles with much smaller in size and different in shape in the air besides the ordinary cedar pollen. The calculation shows that each ordinary indoor cedar pollen particle has 6pg of Cry j1 respectively., 2005, 594, 39-44, 39, 43, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aije.70.39

In order to evaluate the effects of countermeasures, it is necessary to make clear the impacts of these countermeasures in each season. In this paper, the authors have simulated the urban scale climate in summer and winter. The structure of thermal environment in each season was analyzed based on an "Urban Heat-Balance Model". In this analysis, the mechanism of diurnal changes of air temperature and absolute humidity was examined. Furthermore, the environmental influence by greening and high albedo surface was analyzed in each season. In the summer season, these countermeasures have great impact on urban thermal environment. On the other hand, although high albedo surface reduces temperature, there are less impact in the winter season., 2004, 577, 577, 55, 62, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aije.69.55_1

Among them, replanting at the urbanized area such as roof planting is the most popular measure used, and major cities have actually introduced programs to promote the urban tree planting. The method of tree planting surely decreases air temperature, but an increase in air humidity has subsequently occurred. Thus, these two aspects should be considered simultaneously in order to evaluate the effects of urban planting. A new concept for evaluating the countermeasure for heat island, which considers the generation and transports of sensible heat and latent heat within urban region, is proposed as "Urban Thermal Metabolism model" in this paper. The impact of urban tree planting on urban climate in Tokyo is quantitatively evaluated based on this model., 2004, 69, 579, 73, 80, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aije.69.73_2

Spatial distributions of wind velocity, temperature, humidity and radiation are measured within courtyard canyon space around apartment complex located in Tokyo. The values of physical parameters which affect outdoor thermal environment, such as albedo, convective heat transfer. moisture availability, leaf area density and so on, are estimated from the results of this measurement. It is also clarified that the effects of tree planting on outdoor thermal and wind climates., 2002, 67, 552, 69, 76, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.67.69_2

In order to clarify the characteristics of the overall regional climate, the method of using and compensating the calculation result and the observation result together is examined. Since the nesting technique is used, in the target area, the calculation result and the observation result are adjusted. By considering the distribution of air temperature and wind vector obtained by the calculation and by the observation, the recommendation to urban and building planning can be proposed., 2002, 67, 556, 63, 68, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.67.63_4
  • Refereed, Journal of Architecture and Planning (Transactions of AIJ), Architectural Institute of Japan, NUMERICAL STUDY BASED ON UNSTEADY RADIATION AND CONDUCTION ANALYSIS : Prediction of outdoor environment with unsteady coupled simulation of convection, radiation and conduction Part 1, HARAYAMA Kazuya; YOSHIDA Shinji; OOKA Ryozo; MOCHIDA Akashi; MURAKAMI Shuzo, The purpose of this research is to develop a prediction method of outdoor thermal environment based on unsteady coupled simulation of convection, radiation and conduction. The prediction method of outdoor thermal environment has been already Proposed by the authors based on the steady coupled simulation. However the method based on steady state simulation is obviously insufficient for predicting thermal environment since the heat storage effect of solid material cannot be considered. This paper consists of two parts. In the first part, the unsteady radiation and conduction analysis method is introduced and the heat storage effect of solid material is numerically investigated for simple building model using this method. In the latter part, accuracy of the prediction method developed here is examined by comparing its results with the field measurement data., 2002, 67, 556, 99, 106, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.67.99_4

  • Refereed, Journal of Architecture and Planning (Transactions of AIJ), Architectural Institute of Japan, NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF SCATTER OF FIRE BRAND WITHIN URBAN FIRE SPREAD, SHIRAISHI Yasuyuki; KATO Shinsuke; YOSHIDA Shinji; MURAKAMI Shuzo, The main driving forces for the propagation of urban fires are the thermal radiation from the fire and the leaping flames due to the drifting firebrands. In the present work, drifting firebrands in an urban fire are numerically simulated by means of CFD with a turbulence model. Firebrands are treated as airborne particles subject to sedimentation due to the gravity. Characteristics of brand drifting are investigated under various wind conditions, sedimentation speed and locations of a brand source. 1) When the approaching flow is relatively slow, the vertical thermal plume is raised by the fire and reaches up to around 100m height. In comparison, when the approaching flow is fast, the incoming flow acts to suppress the thermal plume. 2) The sedimentation fluxes over the downstream building roofs increase under high wind conditions, so the risk of the fire spreading increases on the leeward side of the fire. 3) Drifting patterns measured with the sedimentation fluxes over the downstream building roofs and so on, depend much on the effective diameter of brands. 4) When the upward plane of the building catches fire, the circulation flow in front of the burning surface suppresses thermal diffusion in the horizontal direction. In contrast, when the leeward plane of the building catches fire, the leeward circulation behind the building promotes horizontal thermal diffusion. The latter flow results in the reduction in the velocity of thermal plume. 5) When the roof or the leeward plane of the building catches fire, it developed into hot ascending flow patterns which promote the drifting of the firebrand., 2001, 66, 546, 187, 192, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.66.187_3

The model for the plant canopy developed here considers the following effects : (1) drag force of the planted trees, (2) shading effects on shortwave and longwave radiations, (3) production of latent heat from the plant canopy. Three cases were carried out here in order to evaluate the relaxation effect of plants on the outdoor thermal environment. In easel, green area ratio of ground surface was assumed 10%, while the green area ratio of ground surface was changed to 100% in case2. Furthermore plant canopies were set on the ground surface of case2 in case3. By comparing the distributions of scalar wind velocity, ground surface temperature, MRT (Mean Radiant Temperature) and SET (Standard Effective Temperature) in these three cases, effects of the plant canopy were clarified., Oct. 2000, 65, 536, 87, 94, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.65.87_4

Research Projects

  • Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Apr. 2017, Mar. 2020, 17K06672, Principal investigator, Investigation of effects of thermal and optical stimulations on phyisology, psychorology, and dynamic adaptation for pedestrians in outdoor space, Yoshida Shinji, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Nara Women's University, 4810000, 3700000, 1110000, In this study, the relationships between the adaptive behavior of pedestrians to thermal environment in outdoor spaces in summer season and environmental conditions were analyzed by using experiment, field observation, and numerical analysis. By the results derived from both the experiment and the field observation, it was found that the adaptive behaviors of the pedestrians were deeply affected by the optical stimulation when the staying time of pedestrians is relatively short, such as about 15 minutes. In this study, we also proposed a computational method that enables evaluation considering the obtained knowledge from the experiment and the field observation. In the future, it is expected that the basic analysis model proposed here will be further improved and that it will be applied to the environmental design of the actual walking space., kaken

Moreover, urban warming is caused by both global warming and urban heat islands (UHIs). This study proposed a system to assess the effects of countermeasures used to mitigate global warming, mitigate UHIs, and adapt to urban warming simultaneously. Moreover, an evaluation method for outdoor health risk in the extremely hot days was developed. In this study, to distinguish between hazards that cannot be controlled by humans and those that can be controlled by modification of urban structures, “natural hazard” and “actual hazard” were defined, respectively. Using the assessment systems, the effects of countermeasures were evaluated. Finally, the priority of measures for appropriate design of outdoor urban environment under future climate conditions was concluded., kaken

This method is based on an outdoor CFD analysis model coupled with radiant computation, a human thermoregulation model, and an adapting model for activities of a pedestrian. At the beginning of this study, we carried out a field observation in order to obtain a relationship between a thermal environment and adapting walking route or activity for a pedestrian in outdoor space in summer season. A prototype model was developed by incorporating the knowledge from the measurement results into an existing model for adapting activities with functional comfort. The proposed method enables us to consider both a functional or psychological comfort and a thermal or physiological comfort for a pedestrian., kaken
