This paper presents a geospatial analysis of a FlatGeobuf database composed of six years of geographic data on approximately 41.7 million Mapillary photo shooting locations throughout Japan and geospatial data including road data from OpenStreetMap (OSM). Although Mapillary has a shorter track record than OSM, it is a massive data source and its use as a new resource for volunteered geographic information is expected to attract attention in the future. Therefore, we aim to clarify the geographical distribution of Mapillary users and time-series transitions and attempt to analyze the relationships of these road landscape images with OSM road data and the local geographical distribution characteristics. Although the geographical distribution of Mapillary locations is biased, much information is collected for local roads, which may improve the quality of OSM road data and expand the overall road data., 06 Aug. 2022, XLVIII-4/W1-2022, 403, 410, Scientific journal, 10.5194/isprs-archives-xlviii-4-w1-2022-403-2022

  • Refereed, ISPRS INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GEO-INFORMATION, MDPI, Quality Verification of Volunteered Geographic Information Using OSM Notes Data in a Global Context, Toshikazu Seto; Hiroshi Kanasugi; Yuichiro Nishimura, Although the data obtained from volunteered geographic information (VGI) are inherently different from public surveys, the quantity of the data are vast and the quality of the data are often poor. To improve the quality of VGI data, the positional accuracy and diversity and interaction of the number of users involved in the regional generation of the data are important. This research proposes a new approach for the accumulation of OpenStreetMap (OSM) data by using OSM Notes and attempts to analyze the geographical distribution and the characteristics of the contents of the contributions, quantitatively and qualitatively. Subsequently, the results demonstrated regional differences in OSM Notes, but it provided users with an understanding of the new features of quality management in OSM, even in regions where OSM activities are not necessarily active. In addition, it was also possible to discover new factors such as the time transition required for the correction and contribution of anonymous users. These results are expected to serve as a tool for users to communicate with each other to resolve data bugs that exist in OSM and provide future researchers with examples of user interaction in global OSM activities., Jun. 2020, 9, 6, 372, 372, Scientific journal, 10.3390/ijgi9060372
  • Refereed, International Journal of Cartography, Informa {UK} Limited, VGI contributors’ awareness of geographic information quality and its effect on data quality: a case study from Japan, Jun Yamashita; Toshikazu Seto; Yuichiro Nishimura; Nobusuke Iwasaki, In many countries, geospatial data are typically provided by public institutions. Cities have been mapped using such public data. On the other hand, the demand for geospatial data has been diversifying, given the requirements for mapping cities. To respond to demands for new geospatial data, creation of citizen-generated open data and volunteered geographic information (VGI) have recently become popular. However, the quality of such open data and VGI are not always guaranteed. The number of studies on quality assessments of VGI have increased in recent years. The present study aimed to identify OpenStreetMap (OSM), one type of VGI, as well as contributors' awareness of data quality, and the relationships between their awareness and the positional accuracy of the OSM data contributed by them. The results showed that awareness or lack of the positional accuracy did not affect the quality of the OSM data created by the contributors. These findings suggest that the crowdsourcing approach might not guarantee the data quality of VGI., 04 May 2019, 5, 2-3, 214, 224, Scientific journal, 10.1080/23729333.2019.1613086

F6 (Safety Problem), Japan Society of Civil Engineers, SURVEY REGARDING AWARENESS OF LARGE SCALE PRE-STORM EVACUATION IN TIMES OF APPROACHING SUPER TYPHOONS, IMAI Yutaro; KOIKE Norimitsu; NISHIMURA Yuichiro,  The Tokai Nederland Storm Surge- Big Flood Regional Authority was established to scrutinise large scale pre-storm evacuation for super typhoons with regard to the downstream Kiso-Sansen and Ise Bay lowland areas. Therefore, six public elementary schools were chosen from Nakagawa, Minato and Minami wards within Nagoya city, which had been damaged during the Ise Bay typhoon. Parents of fifth and sixth year students were asked to participate in a survey. The results of the survey raised several concerns. We cannot anticipate smooth evacuation due to limited awareness of large scale pre-storm evacuation itself. Traffic congestion and parking counter-measures must be considered as we predict most families will end up travelling by car to nearby shelters which are in danger of flooding. Furthermore, the timing of the announcement is important, as the start time of the evacuation may differ due to the typhoon landing time., 2012, 68, 2, I_66, I_73, 10.2208/jscejsp.68.I_66

  • Refereed, Geographical Review of Japan, The Association of Japanese Geographers, Notes on the Issues of "GIS and Society": Critical GIS as an Alternative Geographic Information Science, 若林 芳樹; 西村 雄一郎, With the dissemination of GIS and geospatial technologies, the influence of them on not only geographical research but also society has been discussed in English-speaking countries since 1990s. Further, in Japan, as the production of geospatial data and diffusion of GIS have remarkably progressed, geospatial technologies are penetrating into business and daily life. The aim of this paper is to summarize the argument about the issues of GIS and society in English-speaking countries and consider their implications for the GIS studies in Japan. To begin with, we examined the tone and background of the argument about the issues of GIS and society before 2000 mainly on the basis of the work of Schuurman who called this subject "Critical GIS" dividing the progress of the argument into three periods. As a result, it was found that the controversy between GIS scholars and social theorists in the early 1990s changed to cooperation between two groups around the mid 1990s owing to the dialog meeting held by NCGIA in the USA. This movement led to the establishment of Geographic Information Science that embraces the issues of GIS and society as a research subject. Then, we traced the development of the argument since 2000, especially in North America, and found that the following themes concerning GIS and society have been discussed: the practice of PPGIS, qualitative GIS raised by feminist geographers, social construction of GIS based on the perspective of STS (Science, Technology, and Society), and ethical or legal issues of surveillance and privacy. While these arguments are suggestive of GIS studies in Japan, Japanese scholars do not fully understand the point of the argument. This seems to be reflected in the partial understanding of PPGIS that has been led on the initiative of the Japanese government. Recently, however, interest in the social impact of the sophistication of geospatial technologies has grown in Japan because of the increasing popularity of LBS (Location-Based Services) provided using mobile phones and the Internet. In addition, it is expected that enactment of Japanese NSDI (National Spatial Data Infrastructure) Law in 2007 will promote the prevalence of geospatial information and related technologies. Hence, Japanese scholars are now coming to grips with the issues related to GIS and society. While tackling these issues, we ought to grasp the meaning of critical GIS accurately, considering the characteristics of the technological development and institutional/social context of GIS in Japan., 2010, 83, 1, 60, 79, 10.4157/grj.83.60
  • Refereed, Japanese Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University, Time-geographic Analysis on Natural Resource Use in a Village of the Vientiane Plain, Nishimura Yuichiro; Okamoto Kohei; Boulidam Somkhit, This study aims to describe the spatio-temporal aspects of rural daily lives based on natural resource use. We developed new research methodologies using GPS and GIS to collect person-trip data in regions where it is difficult to use questionnaires. By applying the methodology to research conducted in the Vientiane plain, Laos, we have found that this new methodology makes it possible to obtain detailed information about people's daily activities, specifically: what activities were carried out, at what time, where, and with whom. The research site was Dongkhuwaai Village, Xaithany District, located about 30 km by road from Vientiane. The villagers live traditionally, depending on rice crops in the rainy season and use various natural resources. We analyzed their daily activities both in the rainy season and in the dry season. As a result, we found that the daily activities of the villagers had nature-related constraints. They spent all their time in the settlements and there were no modern forms of time discipline (synchronized activity by household members).
We also investigated the influence of urbanization on rural lives. In recent years, a growing number of foreign companies have begun investing in Vientiane and the vicinity, hoping to take advantage of low labor costs. Commuting to such factories has started from Dongkhuwaai Village. However, the number of commuters is not increasing because villagers already have other sources of income from selling natural resources such as aquatic products, mushroom, bamboo shoots, insects, firewood and so on., 2010, 47, 4, 426, 450, 10.20495/tak.47.4_426
  • Refereed, Journal of Geography (Chigaku Zasshi), Tokyo Geographical Society, Daily Activity Survey in Lao Suburban Village Using GPS and GIS, NISHIMURA Yuichiro; OKAMOTO Kohei; BOULIDAM Somkhit,  Many time-allocation studies have adopted questionnaires (activity diaries) or direct observation of informants. However, it is difficult to use questionnaires in rural areas of developing countries due to problems such as illiteracy, the fact that few people possess a watch, and the lack of place names in many rural and wild areas. Direct observation also has limitations because it is not possible to obtain information from many informants simultaneously. We developed a new survey method combining interviews with the use of GPS and GIS. The procedures are as follows. (1) Each informant is asked to carry a wristband GPS receiver for an entire day. The GPS unit records information related to the spatio-temporal aspects of the informant's activities. (2) After 24 hours of GPS, recording is completed; then the data are stored and represented visually using GIS software (ArcView 9.1). The investigator works out the shape of the spatio-temporal path of each informant by mapping tracking points with time information. (3) Subsequently, as GPS data reveals almost nothing about the content of activities, the investigator interviews each informant to clarify details of activities: what activity was carried out, at what time, where, and with whom.
We conducted the survey in Dongkhuwaai Village, which is located about 30km from Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The daily activities of villagers consist mainly of a combination of subsistence agriculture, fishing, hunting, and gathering. By carrying out this survey, in which 138 villagers participated, it was verified that the new survey method has the following merits. (1) Using GPS improves the accuracy of spatio-temporal data. (2) GPS data can be easily correlated with satellite images and map data, which enables us to consider people's daily activities in combination with various geographical phenomena. (3) Investigators can obtain information outlining an informant's activities from GPS data before conducting interviews, thereby improving the efficiency of interviews., 25 Apr. 2008, 117, 2, 568, 581, 10.5026/jgeography.117.568

Nowadays, Chinese daily lives are changing by the effects of open economic structure. The author argues these changes by reviewing the some of recent studies and analyzing the time-budget data from activity diary survey of several Chinese cities. In the construction of socialistic China, the state intended to make the equal position of female and male in the family. By modernizing the family form, women could work outside of home, and they supplied the need for the industrial and agricultural workforces. The danwei (work unit) is the basic unit of daily activities, in the building the socialistic Chinese cities. The workplace, accommodation units, shopping stores, schools and hospitals in the same danwei are closely located. The danwei operates the facilities like nursery home, living support station or day-care center for socialization of the domestic work. The workplace and the home is not spatially isolated, women's role are not fixed in the private sphere. Though most of household matters have remained on the female role and occupational segregation by sex has existed, separation of gender role has not clear than that of the capitalist society. However, recent economic change to open policies affects the position of female labor. Equal pay between both sexes is declined and many firms avoid the female working in terms of cost inefficiency because they need additional welfare supports in their maternity or child rearing. Some service facilities for supporting women working are restructured. The gender gap in the workplace can enlarge. Next, I analyzed the time-budget data from activity diary survey of several Chinese cities (Tianjin, Dalian, Shenzhen) to realize the relation between everyday working life and domestic life. Allocations of time for classified daily activities (work, household matter, shopping, other private matter, sleep, leisure) are measured, and I discussed the gender division in household by using these data. Allocation of time is varied by these three cities. Working time of Shenzhen 's husband is longer than that of Tianjin's and Dalian's. Because difference of wives'working time by these three cities is relatively short, large gender difference would be seen in Shenzhen's household. Sleeping time in these cities is longer than that of Japanese. Gender difference of sleeping time is very small, which is unlike Japanese household (in Japanese household, wives'sleeping time is shorter than husbands'sleeping time). Sleeping time has areal difference between three cities. Sleeping time of Shenzhen is longer than that of Dalian (about one hour), because natural time could affect to sleeping time. Shenzhen's husbands have shortest time for household matter. In Shenzhen, wives practice most of household matters. This gender division is not so much marked in other two cities. The gender role, which locate male to workplace and female to home is well observed in Shenzhen household. By the analysis of relation between occupational status of husband/wife and time for household matter, the difference in occupational status between husband and wife affects the balance of household matter between husband and wife. If the wife has high occupational status (like management position), husband would tend to do a household matter as compared with other household type. By this analysis, gender role in household could be seen in Chinese household. I would like to point out the gender difference in home and workplace will accelerate as the capitalistic system expanded., 01 Oct. 2003, 16, 16, 105, 119

  • Refereed, Geographical Review of Japan, The Association of Japanese Geographers, Geography of Gender in the Workplace:Toward a More Comprehensive Approach to Gender Studies in Japan, NISHIMURA Yuichiro, This paper reviews the geographic perspectives on gender and the workplace in Japan and discusses these developments in a Japanese geographic context. Although some geographic studies have been conducted in Japan on the gendered workplace, they have taken a limited viewpoint of gender perspectives. The author critically examines several papers on the spatial division of labor and time-geography, because these studies neglected gender relations in the workplace.
Reviewing studies by feminist geographers on the new gender order emerging with post-Fordism (McDowell 1991) and the microgeographies of the workplace constructed based on gender relations, this paper attempts to recognize the changing gender order and everyday gender relations in workplaces in Japan. In the Toyotism period (since the 1970s-80s), it was likely that occupational segregation and gender division of labor were different from these in Western countries. However, the situation changed in the 1990s. Restructuring in the 1990s affected gender relations in the workplace, but it also affected the boundary between the home and the workplace. A new space, where boundaries between the home and workplace are unclear, is emerging.
When examining how the new gender order in Japan is constructed, microgeographies in the workplace, economic/social/cultural/political factors, and networks must all be taken into account., 2002, 75, 9, 571, 590, 10.4157/grj.75.571

  • Refereed, Japanese Journal of Human Geography, The Human Geographical Society of Japan, The Time-Space Transformation of Automobile Manufacturing Workers:An Analysis Based on the Concepts of Production Project and Family Project, NISHIMURA Yuichiro, In this article, I discuss how the family activities of automobile manufacturing workers from Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) are influenced by the transformation of production projects. Because of the poor economic situation of the 1990s in Japan, the automobile manufacturing section at Toyota put a system of time management into force as a part of its restructuring programme. After the time management system had been enforced, the family activities and gender divisions in households of the manufacturing workers in this section changed to a certain extent. Here, for the methodology, I use the project concept from‘time geography’based on time-space budgeted data, and try to examine the relations between the production project and family projects.
In the second section of this paper, I explain the production project by Toyota and its transformation. The production project strongly influences the activities of the workers. During working hours, the workers are constrained by severe coupling with the production line. Moreover, the daily paths of the workers are determined by the persistence of holiday working, shift changes, and overtime work as an aspect of human resource flexibility within the Toyota production system. During the period of Japanese high-growth, Toyota centrally determined the workers day and night shift system (day shift 8:00∼17:00, night shift 21:00∼6:00) and overtime work. In recent years, the need for cost reduction and improvements in employment efficiency were required due to the change of economic trends in the international market and to changes in Japanese society. This situation caused the appearance of another working pattern, such as the sequential two shift system (1st shift 6:30∼15:15, 2nd shift 16:15∼1:00).
In the third section of this paper, I clarify the sharing activities of the workers in the family project. For the sharing activities, I chose the meal activities and going-out activities of family members. The activity patterns of wife and husband match in the day shift and reverses in the night shift. This pattern changes week by week. It is thought of as continuous activity, most of the worker's families take their meal together in the evening despite this weekly cycle. It remains, however, that the going-out activities are rarely done by them together. It seems that the production project is a significant factor of constraint for the husband doing any activities other than working. Because of the transformation to the sequential two shift system, the activity patterns of wife and husband do not match anymore and so they have a difficulty even in sharing the meal together. However, the husbands have joined shopping activities with their families.
In the fourth section of this article, I discuss the division of household activities of the workers in the family project. For instance, I chose some pickup and send-off activities for their children and I tried to explain the change of gender division of household activities. When the day and night shift system was in place it was impossible the for wife and husband to share the household activities and childcare. Therefore, the wife had to do all the household activities. However, after the sequential two shift system was introduced, husbands began to do household activities such as pickup and send-off activities for their children. Thus, the changes of gender division of household activities became evident. As a consequence, the flexibility of the production project was weakened in daily scale but that of the family project was increased., 1998, 50, 3, 232, 255, 10.4200/jjhg1948.50.232

  • NISHIMURA Yuichiro, Proceedings of the General Meeting of the Association of Japanese Geographers, Counter-mapping and the participation, 2013, 1.

The open data means that the data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control. The open data is now to be the important issues among developed countries. On the other hand, the counter-mapping activities (the mapping by ordinary people against authority mapping) has been apparent in Japan after 2011 great east japan earthquake situation partly because there were no detailed disaster information and the doubt about the information from the authorities. We investigated the counter-mapping plactices from the aspect of data collecting, sharing method of maps, and quality of maps. We analyzed the progress and limit of counter-mapping activities in Japanese society and effects to counter-mapping activities from Japanese open data movement by national/local government or citizens., Competitive research funding, url
  • Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), 01 Apr. 2014 - 31 Mar. 2018, 26300007, Comparative study on geography education at the secondary level in Asian countries, TAKADA Masashi; OBITANI HIROAKI, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Nara Women's University, 13650000, 10500000, 3150000, In this study we surveyed the present status of geography education at the secondary level (grade 7 - 12) in several Asian countries. Some countries do not have a stand-alone geography subject at the secondary level and stand-alone subjects of geography in many countries are not usually compulsory but elective at the higher secondary level (grade 11 - 12).
The characteristics in contents of geography education at the secondary level in the Asian countries are emphasizing of physical part of geography. In physical geography, terms of landform and climate are so much dealt but terms of soils and vegetation are not so much done in those countries without Singapore and Bhutan. In human geography the relationship between the phenomenon and own place (own country) are regarded as important., url

As villager's subsistence strategy in this unstable natural environment, they depend on rain-fed cultivation, collection, and sale of various animals-and-plants resources, such as rice, wild plant, fish, shellfish and various a kind of insect. Economically, this complex resource use guarantees food security, and can be evaluated as a continuous lifestyle which is in the opposite poles of the large monochrome culture-agriculture of an environmental impact ecologically. In recent years, phenomena had strong influence of manufacturing industry, population growth, an increase in household off-farm job opportunities. The aim of this joint study is to analyze complex animals-and-plants resources use and their mode of change. These resources comply a various kind of rice, other crops, wild plant, fresh water fish and shellfish, insect, which are cultivated, domesticated, collected, or sold. Main study sites are 1) a rain-fed village on Korat plateau, Northeast Thailand, 2) a rain-fed village in Vientiane plain which occupies bush/forest partly, Laos. We try to clarify and examine the common feature of these two areas and its sustainability under the influence of the global market economy by cooperation with interdisciplinary academic research teams.
