  • Frontiers in Built Environment, Frontiers Media SA, Investigation of microtremors observed at historic masonry townhouse buildings after Nepal earthquake, Yoichi Mukai; Hayato Hoshino; Naohiko Yamamoto; Masaya Masui; Anri Miyauchi; Ram Prasad Suwal, The Gorkha earthquake in 2015 was a recent large-scale earthquake that caused severe damage to many historic masonry buildings in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. The authors conducted a visual inspection survey of seismically damaged buildings after the earthquake in the historic town district of Bhaktapur in the Kathmandu Valley. The first part of this paper reports the distribution of the historic masonry buildings for each damage level in the surveyed area. A concentrating zone of severely-damaged buildings was explicitly found in the damage-level distribution map. Almost half of all the surveyed buildings were severely damaged during the earthquake, and most of these were historic masonry townhouse buildings. In the second part, the ambient vibration characteristics of the conventional historic masonry buildings in Bhaktapur are investigated. Typical dwelling houses in a historic town district in Nepal, which generally formed terraced houses built around a courtyard, were targeted for the measurement. Thus, the influence of adjacent buildings, which makes it difficult to identify the predominant natural frequencies from building vibration measurements, was also observed. Microtremor measurements using two accelerometers were conducted at 11 historic masonry buildings to investigate the discrimination degree for identifying the predominant natural frequency of conventional townhouse buildings. The estimated primary natural frequencies of these buildings were compared with the results of the screening model analysis. The advantages of using the proposed screening model analysis to improve the uncertainty of the first natural frequency identification by the microtremor measurement are discussed. Additional measurements of the microtremors at 4 of the 11 measured buildings were conducted using a different location combination of the two acceleration sensors. The sensors were placed between two different floors, and the transfer functions of each floor were investigated to observe the predominant vibration components on the floors in the entire building. Moreover, the coherence values observing the in-plane correlation of the floor responses were also analyzed for the dataset measured at two points separated on the same floor. Finally, an effective method for measuring the microtremors is discussed to improve the assessment of the vibration characteristics of conventional historic masonry buildings in Nepal., 31 Aug. 2022, 8, Scientific journal, 10.3389/fbuil.2022.918960
  • Refereed, Journal of Architecture and Planning (Transactions of AIJ), Architectural Institute of Japan, TYPOLOGY ON EXTERIOR DESIGN OF TOWNHOUSES IN A WORLD CULTURAL HERITAGE SITE OF A NEPALI CITY:The case study on an urban block in the eastern part of Bhaktapur, HAMAOKA Asuka; YAMAMOTO Naohiko; YOSHIDA Tetsuya; MIYAUCHI Anri; MASUI Masaya; MUKAI Yoichi,  The paper deals with the exterior design of townhouses in an urban block of the eastern part of Bhaktapur in Kathmandu Valley registered as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1979. The paper consists of following five steps.
     1) First and the most important purpose is to provide analysis method to determine typical combination among exterior design elements of Nepali townhouses. By adopting the Multiple Correspondence Analysis (or Mathematical Quantification Theory Category III is equivalent also) and Cluster Analysis, 118 samples are grouped into 13 clusters.
     2) Secondly, in the preceding paper, authors proposed the idea called "eaves types". It was meant to discern the developing process of Nepali townhouses between extension of storeys and total reconstruction. Although we showed the pitched eaves types and flat eaves experience different development, we had not yet reached to describe the concrete facade classification of eaves types. The paper tries to present variation of exterior design of eaves types.
     3) Several clusters derived from analysis show different characteristics of facade though sometimes they belong to the same eaves type. For 3F, 4F pitched eaves type and 3F, 4F flat eaves type, the analysis results in finding both traditional sophisticated design and contemporary one. What's more, cluster 8 regarded as one with the most traditional style contains both typical old townhouses and newly rebuilt guesthouse-like ones. This may suggest that recent exterior design of guesthouses are similar to that of traditional townhouses
     4) Every cluster properly corresponds to the structure excluded from item-category type data. Clusters with flat eaves correspond chiefly to confined masonry followed by mixed structure with masonry and RCC slabs. As for affected condition by 2015 earthquake, all the three clusters within 3F no eaves type came under the category "partially destroyed".
     5) Finally after clustering, all samples were put into the original plots on the map. Facades of townhouses along streets tend to maintain traditional exterior design elements as opposed to the facades inside courtyards, which would normally take on modest external appearance. There are also several variations of facades ranging somewhere between traditional and simple modern exterior design. Townhouses with such marginal designs are scattered along streets, in alleys and inside courtyards.
In this way, most of clusters can be related to certain locations in correspondence with their exterior designs. This would help a designer/ planner to reflect how they should compose a proper facade once they get involved in reconstruction works of townhouses after the earthquake., Feb. 2019, 756, 425, 435, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.84.425
  • Refereed, Journal of the City Planning Institute of Japan, The City Planning Institute of Japan, The study on vertical division with inheritance of traditional townhouses' façade in a Nepali historic city.:A case of the historic area of t the WCH city, Bhaktapur, Nepal, Funahashi Tomomi; Masui Masaya; Yamamoto Naohiko; Mukai Yoichi; Pant Mohan,

In Nepali historic cities, it is commonly seen that a façade of townhouse is vertically divided at the time of inheritance, which causes damages on traditional façade corruption as well as structural vulnerability. While it has been inside the framework of traditional transition, the cases of new construction of divided parts have been accelerated in the process of reconstruction after the 2015 earthquake and results the rapid transition of townscapes. This paper discus the challenges of this issue based on the survey of specific area in Bhaktapur and reveals that styles of façade design have been influenced by division system; façade division is closely related to interior one: the on-going building regulation does not manage this issue and requested to compile this issue.

  • Refereed, Journal of Architecture and Planning (Transactions of AIJ), Architectural Institute of Japan, EXTERIOR DESIGN OF TOWN HOUSES AND THEIR EXTENSION/RECONSTRUCTION PROCESS WITH REGARD TO EAVES TYPES IN A WORLD CULTURAL HERITAGE SITE OF A NEPALI CITY:The case study on inside and outside monument zone in the eastern part of Bhaktapur, YAMAMOTO Naohiko; TAKAHASHI Kayo; MASUI Masaya; MIYAUCHI Anri; MUKAI Yoichi,  The paper deals with the exterior design of town houses both inside and outside monument zone of the eastern part of Bhaktapur in Kathmandu Valley registered as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1979. This paper consists of following four steps.
     1) Firstly, authors composed the original format of survey sheet for Nepali town houses. The categories of this sheet are grouped into four items, which are frame, silhouette, part and element, each of which contains more detailed categories. The survey sheet was completely made from scratch with reference to the several important existing researches. The number of samples are 104 buildings inside Monument Zone (core + buffer zone) of World Cultural Heritage and 73 buildings outside Monument Zone. More than 90 % of the total sample buildings are classified as townhouses.
     2) Secondly, the paper tries to submit a hypothesis on that either a town house experienced the extension of the upper floors or totally reconstructed during the course of time. Authors propose ‘eaves types’ as the key idea in this hypothesis. Eaves types are classified into 8 types depending on which floor level eaves are attached to. Eaves types are classified into three upper level groupings, i.e. pitched eaves group, flat eaves group and without eaves group. As for structure, pitched eaves group are basically masonry construction as opposed to the RCC construction (confined masonry) or mixed structure (masonry wall + RCC beams, masonry + RCC rooftop) for flat eaves group. In addition, three-storey buildings of without eaves group turned out to be masonry construction and four-storey buildings of the same group chiefly consist of RCC construction. The former eaves type shows similar characteristic to pitched eaves group. So does the latter to flat eaves group.
Regarding the relations among eaves types, the paper made an attempt to establish a diagram that explains the transition among important eaves types whether an eaves type is reconstructed or just upper floors are extended.
     3) Result of the exterior design survey is primarily compared between inside and outside Monument zone of world cultural heritage. Further analysis is conducted by two levels as needed, i.e. comparison among eaves group and that among eaves types. The items to be examined here are frontage, roof shapes, roofing materials, finishing on the first floor wall, openings on the first floor as well as on the third floor, wood carving, window lattice and cornice between the second and the third floor. The result turned out show distinct characteristics among eaves types or eaves groups that led authors to provisional proof of the hypothesis with eaves types.
     4) Eaves types are finally confirmed with the construction period and upper floor extension period. In Nepal, for the past one century, prior to Nepal-Gorkha earthquake in April 2015 earthquake, two devastating earthquakes happened. They are Bihal-Nepal Earthquake in January 1934 and India-Nepal border region earthquake in August 1988. These years are applied to separation of periods for recovery from the disaster was the chances to reconstruct the affected buildings. The result of the comparison of reconstruction/extension periods with eaves types again very well explained the characteristics of each eaves type., Feb. 2018, 83, 744, 263, 273, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.83.263
  • Refereed, Journal of Architecture and Planning (Transactions of AIJ), Architectural Institute of Japan, PLANNING TYPOLOGY OF URBAN DWELLINGS AND THEIR DEVELOPMENT PROCESS FOUND WITHIN A VOTARY AREA TO THE HOUSE GUARDIAN DEITY AND DISTRIBUTION OF INHABITANTS' SURNAME:A study on the socio-spatial structure and urban tissue in Bhaktapur, Nepal Part2, MIYAUCHI Anri; YAMAMOTO Naohiko; MASUI Masaya; PANT Mohan; MUKAI Yoichi,  This paper aims to discuss fundamental units forming urban settlement blocks and their development process which demarcate urban fabric with respect to the combination arrangement of urban dwellings types. Bhaktapur is known as one of the historic cities of the World Heritage Site in Kathmandu Valley. The analysis focuses on the house distributions that have common votary areas of the house guardian deity called chetrapatra and the aerial extent of the same surname (thar). Considering these into account, the authors classified urban dwellings into 9 types. We try to submit a hypothesis on the development process of planning type clusters of urban dwellings as fundamental units forming urban settlement blocks.
chetrapatra is an iconic ritual artifact made of stone slab carved in a form of eight-pealed lotus, and it is placed in front of a house entrance or in a courtyard. People worship this stone when they go out to the street from their house or a lane. There are also cases when this type of chetrapatra is common to inhabitants who go in and out at the lane. We classify chetrapatras into 7 types based on ownership and locations. The areal extent for worship to chetrapatra is sub-divisions in the areal extent for worship to Ganesh shrine. But they must be owned respectively on either side of the street.
The Newar population may be classified into various social status according to the traditional profession, caste, or other form of socio-religious associations. In Bhaktapur, their social status are divided into 3 categories. These are the Macrostatus system, thar and phuki. as proposed by Levy (1990). We conducted survey on the distribution of thar for our analysis to have information of kinship. We found five areal extent of a same thar in the case-study area. They all spread the both side of street but have the different plot depth perpendicular to the street.
Next we classify urban dwellings into 9 types whether they have a common chetrapatrs or individual one and their locations, which we call ‘Planning Types of Urban Dwellings’. It should be noted that ‘Courtyard Dwelling Units’ is relatively old compared to the other types of urban dwelling units. In addition, this type has one common chetrapatra shared by all the residences surrounding the same courtyard. chetrapatra is placed in front of the entrance of a ‘Courtyard Dwelling Units’. On the other hand, ‘Detached houses facing the street’ tend to have their own chetrapatra.
Finally, we analyze the distribution of ‘Planning Type Clusters of Urban Dwellings’ in the case-study area. The analysis indicated dominant arrangement patterns which are the one that include ‘Courtyard Dwelling Units’ on one side of the street and ‘Detached houses facing the street on the other side. Taking that into account, we found the particular arrangement patterns of ‘Planning Type clusters of Urban Dwellings’ developed across the street. Another important arrangement pattern is the one that ‘Incomplete Courtyard Dwelling Units’ often found on the plot backside of ‘Detached houses facing the street’. We regard them as two important typical cluster types of urban dwelling units. We suggest that the development process of such cluster types underwent 3 stages, giving great influence to the urban development in the earlier period., Nov. 2017, 82, 741, 2843, 2853, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.82.2843
  • Refereed, Journal of Architecture and Planning (Transactions of AIJ), Architectural Institute of Japan, COMPARISON OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF HOUSEHOLDS WITH REGARD TO WORSHIPPING THE SAME SHRINES OR CROSSINGS, AND THEIR CORRESPONDENCE TO THE AREAL EXTENT OF TOL:A study on the socio-spatial structure and urban tissue in Bhaktapur, Nepal Part1, MIYAUCHI Anri; YAMAMOTO Naohiko; MASUI Masaya; TANAKA Mari; PANT Mohan; HAMAOKA Asuka; MUKAI Yoichi,  This paper aims to discuss the areal extent and spatial structure of neighborhood, called tol, which possibly demarcate urban fabric with respect to worship and funeral procedure. Bhaktapur is known as one of the historic cities of the World Heritage Site in Kathmandu Valley. The analysis focuses on the house distributions that have the common votary area of the guardian deities' shrine and the use of the same crossing for funeral procedure.
A tol is one of the traditional neighborhood units. But it is not clear how tols are structured and what tols have in common. First, we take a look into the existing studies on origin and outline of a tol, and pay special attention to the following two studies. A research done by Pant (2001) has taken the approach that the key to consider a tol is the areal extent of worship to the guardian deities, ganesh. Another research done by Gutschow (1975) has claimed that the clue to determine tol boundaries is the ways of the Dead to crematories. It consider a tol as equivalent to the areal extent of use of the same chwasa which is a stone found often at the crossings on the way to crematories from the diseased houses.
Ganesh is often considered as a guardian deity at various neighborhood levels. That of a tol is called Tol Ganesh. A Tol Ganesh is normally placed on the main square in a tol, except when there is a presence of a more prominent deity of wider importance in the main square. People in the same tol usually worship the same Tol Ganesh. We find out that those living urban dwellings in located on both sides of a street worship to the same Tol Ganesh, but the depth of its areal extent on one side of a street seems shallow than the other side.
Chwasa is an aniconic ritual artifact made of a single stone placed on the crossing. Various articles left by the diseased are disposed on the stone as a part of the funeral procedures, for example clothes, umbilical cord or inauspicious belongings of the dead. We found 7 chwasas in the case-study area to the east of Dattatraya square. However the inhabitants in the peripheral part of the old city do not use these chwasas but use the temples or the crematories outside the city area. People living in the midst of the city area after disposing articles of the dead on chvasa also use the temples afterwards.
Next we compare the areal extent of worship to Tol Ganesh with that of use of chwasa. Whether or not a ganesh shrine and chwasa are closely placed will determines overlapping extent of both votary areas. However it became clear that the areal extent of use of chwasa have the same character with that of worship to Tol Ganesh in terms of Ryogawa-cho structure explained below and the difference in horizontal depth perpendicular to the street.
Finally, our suevey located tol boundaries in the eastern part of Bhaktapur. It turned out that there were 2 types of tol boundaries. i.e. the more common type whose boundaries lying on the backside of houses (Ryogawa-cho type), and the other one with boundaries lying on the street (Katagawa-cho type). Compering these three boundaries, (Tol Ganesh, chwasa and tol), Katagawa-cho type tol boundaries seem to be an exception. But we will try to find particular meaning in them in the next paper on historic urban formation., Jan. 2017, 82, 731, 93, 93, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.82.93
  • Refereed, Journal of Architecture and Planning (Transactions of AIJ), Architectural Institute of Japan, BUILDING LAYOUT INSIDE RURAL HOUSE COMPOUNDS IN SPECIAL PRESERVATION AREAS FOR HISTORIC LANDSCAPE:The case of six village sections such as Okuyama, Asuka, Kawahara, Noguchi, Oka and Shimasho in Asuka village, YAMAMOTO Naohiko; HIRAO Kazuhiro; MIYAUCHI Anri,  Asuka village in Nara prefecture is designated as one of the special preservation areas for historic landscape since 1960's and is well-known for its richness in historic remains originated from Asuka period. This paper focuses on rural house compounds from six different village sections. Village sections located within the plain area are classified into three groups in terms of village layout, i.e. group 1: clustered village (Okuyama, Kawahara and Noguchi), group 2: linear village along the street with east-west axis (Asuka), group 3: linear village along the street with north-south axis (Oka and Shimasho). Composition of rural house compounds in Asuka village and Nara basin consists of main building, directly attached to the main building (tsunoya) and further attached buildings (huzokuya, hanare). We firstly set up the hypothetical model for the building layout development pattern of house compounds which includes every possible extendable pattern of main and attached buildings. The model was examined by the result of our field research which revealed the fact that dominant development patterns follow the basic rule of traditional Japanese idea of the divination of the auspices of a house from its position and orientation., Mar. 2016, 81, 721, 675, 675, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.81.675

Our research was first done by questionnaire survey to all the permanent houses followed by the detailed interview survey to a particular community unit. The paper focuses on Tzu Chi Resettlement in Kelurahan Panteriek in BNA and China Charity Federation Resettlement in Aceh Besar. According to the result of questionnaire survey, most residents from both resettlement sites turned out to live in BNA before, especially in the coastal Kecamatans. However many residents in Tzu Chi Resettlement were former house/land owners who moved in with various reasons. Contrary to that, those in Chinese Resettlement were mostly former tenants who rented houses in BNA. Examination on the livelihood rehabilitation chiefly focuses on occupation, formation of community and intention to reside permanently in the resettlement., Mar. 2014, 79, 697, 597, 597, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.79.597

The paper focuses on two different case study areas there, namely Deah Glumpang in the suburban area and Peulanggahan in the central area. In both areas UN-Habitat was a main donor in terms of permanent housing supply. It adopted community based approach to manage construction process of permanent houses. UN-Habitat had to face and deal with different demands and problems between the two areas. On the other hand, in both areas, one thirds of the households were renters who moved into the sites after the disaster. It is notable that the market for permanent housing had been already formed in the central area.
In August 2007, not a few permanent houses were modified by extending spaces, especially in the central part. Kitchen placed open-air to keep necessary space inside the house caused problem for many households. There were four patterns of space utilization for kitchen inside a house as opposed to more or less uniform space usage pattern concerning other daily activities such as sleeping, dining, prayer and reception of guests limited by the minimal specification of standard housing., 2012, 77, 675, 959, 968, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.77.959

The basic process of the rehabilitation of urban settlements consists of the following four steps. i) confirmation of the survivors, ii) confirmation of the boundary between plots and making of maps (PS), iii) land consolidation (LC) and iv) supply of permanent houses. There were two organizations active in the rehabilitation process. UN-Habitat adopted a community-based approach. ADB adopted a comprehensive approach to rehabilitate the settlement by drawing up a master plan to reconstruct the infrastructure and surrounding environment prior to housing supply. The initial permanent housing model led to a mismatch between the proposal and the actual needs, especially in the inner-city situations where people were hoping to obtain houses with better conditions., May 2007, 6, 1, 103, 110, Scientific journal, 10.3130/jaabe.6.103

On the other hand, the topics in group meeting (GM) were mainly on the presentation of self idea and general matters. This data means that the members were using the variety of meeting (PM&GM) properly. The highly evaluated proposals using PM learn some kind of ideas from the sketches and meeting topics of the different pair group, and that fact was mainly mentioned in PM. In conclusion, designing environment using PM leads the Inter-depending structure in the group work., 2007, 72, 612, 27, 34, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.72.27
  • Refereed, Journal of Architecture and Planning (Transactions of AIJ), Architectural Institute of Japan, A COMPARISON OF PRODUCT DESIGN PROCESSES BASED ON THE MANIPULATION OF REFERENTIAL INFORMATION, HIRAO Kazuhiro; YAMAMOTO Naohiko; KATO Tadashi; MIZUTANI Yoshimi, This paper aims at developing a helpful method for producing creative designs by manipulating referential information in the initial stage of the design process. The exercise is carried out for a product design (lightings) by two groups, each of which is intentionally provided with different levels of referential information: one on buildings (Group-A) and the other on products (Group-B). The main findings derived from the analysis are summarized as follows: 1) Four different design process patterns were found according to the 'Concreteness vs. Target-domain Matrix' adopted in the paper. What we've called the 'Dynamic developing pattern' using a wide range of the Matrix domain scored the highest points. This pattern is particular to Group-A members. 2) The quantity of sketches drawn by Group-A was twice the amount of Group-B. This tendency was apparent especially in the initial stage when gathering ideas from the given referential information. 3) The analysis on the contents of the sketches reveals that Group-A members tried to extract abstract relations within the referential information in the initial stage. They then started sketching the concrete material aspects towards the final design. The final proposals following this sketching process generally earned higher scores., 2007, 72, 612, 35, 42, Scientific journal, 10.3130/aija.72.35

Jaipur City, designed by Jai Singh II is thought to have been constructed according to Hindu cosmology. This paper discusses the planning theory in terms of measurement systems employed in the widths and lengths of streets, division of the urban blocks (chowkri) and the distribution of the dwelling units through the analysis of 43 sheets of the City Map (1925–28). The reason why we chose Jaipur is to compare it with Cakranegara (Lombok, Indonesia), which was founded as a colonial city of the Balinese Hindu kingdom in the same period of the early 18th century. This paper makes clear that in reality the sizes of the urban blocks are different place by place while simple measurement systems were introduced in the beginning. It also shows the process of city development with respect to changes in the form of the street pattern. The latter part of the paper focuses on the form of neighbourhood structures and, on types of residential buildings that are the cellular units of the residential quarters. © 2002, Architectural Institute of Japan. It is a characteristic of kampung settlements that various house types exist in the same kampung. But on the other hand, we can find the same house types in many kampungs. This paper investigates kampung houses in Surabaya city and shows their typical types, and then reveals the transformation process of kampung houses through the analysis of the relationship between various house types. Major findings in this paper consist of following points. 1. Examination into the kampongverbetering implemented in Dutch East Indies reveals that postcolonial improvement known as KIP apparently owes its basic ideas to its predecessor. 2. Accomplishments of kampongverbetering supervised by the central government show close resemblance to the items prescribed by detailplan, which was the forthcoming driving force of the contemporary city-planning act. 3. Kampong Sidodadi, one of the first kampongs improved in Surabaya in 1929,turns out to be still inhabited by Madurese as it was in the colonial period despite constant change of the residents. 4. Observance of building lines in Sidodadi had been closely related to the drainage gutters installed both in colonial and post colonial period., 2002, 67, 556, 265, 272, 10.3130/aija.67.265_1

Examining available primary sources such as aerial photographs and cadastral maps, this paper investigates how the expansion of the native urban settlement, i.e. kampungs, took place in and around the former walled town of Surabaya during the course of the 20th century. By the end of 1920's the downtown area of the city experienced two major infrastructure developments, namely the construction of the new harbor and restructuring of existing national railways. These improvements and growth of the urban structure, nevertheless, did not directly prompt the expansion of the new kampungs because of the possible control over its irregular growth. However the areal extent of kampongs grew extensively wide within the first two decades after the independence. It is quite significant to point out that in this development, many of the kampongs occupied the territories abandoned by colonial authorities at the time of Indonesian independence, or by the private enterprises of the day when the colonial properties were requisitioned in the following decade., 2002, 67, 558, 235, 241, 10.3130/aija.67.235_3

Jaipur City designed by Jai Singh II (1688-1743) is thought to have been constructed based on the Hindu idea of town, about which many scholars are still discussing. The cityscape has been very uniquely regulated by using the prototype of urban house called haveli (courtyard house) and bazaar building system along the main street. But the population increase is so rapid that living quarter is drastically changing. This paper firstly clarifies the differences between the forms of dwellings we can identify by the City Map (1925-28) made by Survey of India and those we identified based on the field survey in 1996 and discusses the transformation for these about 70 years. The major structure of the city was already constructed in the middle of 18c. Vertical extensions in order to absorb the population are seen all over the city and the society is mobilized especially by the influx of scheduled caste. This paper discusses the trend of transformation of the city block by focusing on the changes of house form., 2001, 66, 539, 119, 126, 10.3130/aija.66.119_1

We selected Cakranegara city in Lombok island, Indonesia, as a case study. Cakranegara was built as a colonial city of Karanngasem Kingdom in Bali in 18th century. We guess Cakranegara was constructed based on the idea of Bali Hindu City. This study clarifies the space organization of the city by discussing streets pattern, land division, formation of living quarter, distribution of temples, community organization, distribution of the cast and etc. Pura Meru, the central biggest and impressive Hindu temple, dedicated to Brahumana, Vishunu and Siva, was built in 1720 by the king of Karangasem, Agung Made Ngurah, to unite all the Balinese small kingdoms in Lombok. Enclosing three towers, there stand 33 small shrines. The name of each small shrine is derived from the name of karang (neighborhood unit) which has been maintaining the building. We can consider that the distribution of temples (puras) show the original area of the city. In Indonesia, many settlements of Proto-Malay tribes like Batak, Toraja are formed as parallel disposition pattern. Madurese settlements also follow the same pattern. Compared to the settlements of other tribes, Madurese settlements are significant as a prototype because they realize that pattern in the smallest scale. It is also pointed out that Javanese and Balinese settlements in pre-Hindu period followed the same pattern. The analysis on Madurese settlements might reveal the basic rules of space formation of the settlements in Indonesia. This paper firstly tries to grasp the settlement patterns in rural regions in Madura Island. After looking at all the regions in Madura Island, Sanggra Agung is chosen to be surveyed more specifically. Judging from the result of the survey, it is concluded that Islamic influence has played an important role to keep indigenous space formation system of Madurese settlements particularly in western Madura., 1998, 63, 504, 103, 110, 10.3130/aija.63.103_1

This paper consists of following steps. First, the authors compose the original format of the survey sheet for Nepali townhouses. Second, the paper hypothesizes that a townhouse either experienced an extension of the upper floors or was totally reconstructed in the course of time. The authors propose “eaves types” as the key idea in this hypothesis. The result of the exterior design survey is primarily compared between inside and outside the Historic Monument Zone of the World Cultural Heritage site. Further comparison among eaves group or eaves types is done. Finally, eaves types are confirmed with the floor extension/reconstruction period demarcated by past devastating earthquakes. Even though Balinese towns and villages have common house compounds as a fundamental unit, the structure of the settlements make several significant differences between towns and villages. In contrast with the linear composition of villages, urban structure of Gianyar rather has its focus in the center of the town. The analysis on caste distribution also illustrates the importance of the center. The emergence of urban blocks in Gianyar brought about several plot division patterns as opposed to the simple back-to-back plot division in the villages. However the analysis has revealed that the variety of plot division patterns in Gianyar is regulated by the sole principle i.e. the avoidance of building the gate for each house compound toward the north direction. The well-known Balinese cosmological concept of Nawasanga not only influences the planning of the house compound but also the urban formation., 2005, 70, 592, 171, 178, 10.3130/aija.70.171_2

The areal extent of distribution of townhouses as units forming an urban block is judged by the votary area of Hindu gods and occupational surnames. Based on measurement survey of townhouses within this extent, historic development of the urban block is analyzed with regard to the historic difference of townhouses’ floor planning. This also leads to the findings that townhouses have different facades between opposite sides of a street/lane. The historic urban landscape of Nepali cities is formed in such a way that closely relates with the development process of urban blocks., kaken;rm:published_papers;rm:published_papers;rm:published_papers;rm:published_papers;rm:published_papers;rm:misc;rm:misc;rm:misc;rm:misc;rm:misc;rm:misc;rm:misc

Our research was first done by questionnaire survey to all the permanent houses followed by the detailed interview survey to a particular community unit. The paper focuses on one resettlement in BNA and another in its outskirts. Many residents in the former were former house/land owners. Contrary to that, those in suburban one were mostly former tenants who rented houses in BNA. Examination on the livelihood rehabilitation chiefly focuses on occupation, development of community and intention to reside permanently in the resettlement. The paper concludes that locations of workplace as well as stability of the occupation (informal/formal) would have significant effect on the decision whether or not residents continue to live in the permanent houses provided in the suburban resettlement., kaken;rm:published_papers

Those who extend their support to another culture with different social structure need to correctly evaluate the social capitals and values, and then make use of them in the reconstruction process. The understanding of local knowledge and value will contribute to reduce vulnerability and to enhance resilience of a society. To achieve success in building a less vulnerable and more resilient society, collaboration of many sectors; academics from various disciplines, residents, governments, NGO/NPO etc. are indispensable not only in developing countries but also developed countries. The three-dimensional gap was defined as volume where a sphere of radius r cannot sweep through on a three-dimensional building location map. The diameter of the sphere stands for the width of a gap. To extract the gap-volume operations in image-processing method called erosion and dilation were applied and developed. That is, after digital imaging of a three-dimensional building location map, building volume were dilated in terms of a digital figure corresponding to a sphere of rand then eroded. This procedure is equivalent to a dosing operation in morphology and enabled the extracting gaps. We call this method "Sphere Sweeping Method". The following results were obtained by applying this method to the building location of Kyoto city. 1) The ratio of gap projected to horizontal area (gross area ratios) at three different widths of gap is 0.4% at 1.5m width, 1.2% at 2.5m, and 2.2% at 3.5m. 2) The gap ratios and index of density (building density, perimeter-ratio, building coverage) are con-elated. 3) The ratio of three-dimensional gap to the whole volume of buildings at three different widths of gap is 1.5% at 1.5m width, 4.1% at 2.5m, and 7.0% at 3.5m. Therefore the quantity of gap cannot be neglected in urban area., kaken
, kaken

The objectives of this research are; to measure indoor and outdoor thermal environment and analyze the indoor environment in order to investigate the influences of the local climate conditions and the effect of the introduced passive methods, and to make an integrated evaluation on thermal aspect, regarding an experimental house built in Surabaya, Indonesia and a colonial style guest house in Penang, Malaysia. Furthermore, by making use of these results, strategy for improving passive methods is searched, and a new technique which makes use of the local climates and a new environmentally friendly house are proposed. The measured results on the experimental house in Surabaya and the colonial style guest house in Penang were analyzed. That is, the indoor temperature and humidity, radiation heat transfer including solar radiation and the air flow in and around the house were analyzed. By comparing the calculated and measured results, the validity of the simulation model was confirmed. By making use of this simulation program, the influences of the incident and reflected solar radiations on the indoor thermal environment, the effect of the shading on the shading and ventilation efficiencies, and the influence of the ambient environmental conditions on indoor thermal environment were examined. The cooling effect by the circulation of the cooled floor water was evaluated considering the open or close of the openings, and the optimum control of the openings was determined. Along with these studies, the indoor thermal environment of the existing detached and apartment residential houses in Surabaya were measured and analyzed. The usage of the air-conditioners was surveyed., kaken

  • Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 2004, 2005, 16560558, A diachronic study of the characteristics of precincts of shrines and temples in urban area from viewpoint of form, function and cognition, OIKAWA Kiyoaki; FUJII Akira; HIRAO Kazuhiro; YAMAMOTO Naohiko; HASHIMOTO Kenichiro, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Ritsumeikan University, 2600000, 2600000, The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics of precincts of shrines and temples distributed in urban area from viewpoint of form, function and cognition. We investigated the history of precincts of shrines and temples from Edo period to now, then elucidated the types of behaviors and the length of stay in shrines and temples analyzing the results of the survey in Tokyo. We also examined the difference of cognition between shrines and temples. We analyzed spatial pattern of precincts of shrines and temples to clarify their role as green open space. Original polygon data is made based on digitalized ANSEI 3rd(1856) Map and digital map of cities. Based on these data, area size, distribution pattern and morphological characteristics of precincts are compared among Edo, the present Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. The possibility of present precincts as green open spaces was examined. The results show : (1)Temples maintain cluster-type distribution from Edo to the present Tokyo, also in Osaka and Kyoto ; (2)Both shrines and temples have higher green coverage ratios than average ratio of Tokyo 23 wards area ; and (3)Although each size of shrines and temples is smaller than an ordinary park, scattered precincts make green open spaces closer for urban residents., kaken
