  • Refereed, The Japanese Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, The Japanese Group Dynamics Association, Determinants of electricity-saving behaviors after the Great East Japan Earthquake: The effects of descriptive norms, ANDO Kaori; S. Ohnuma,

The present study examined the determinants of electricity-saving behaviors after the Great East Japan Earthquake among university students in 5 areas: Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, and Kansai. After the earthquake, Japan experienced severe electricity shortages, and Japanese citizens were asked to save electricity. Electricity saving in public spaces, such as the use of dimmer lights, was encouraged. Previous studies have shown that descriptive norms, which is the cognition or presence that most others conduct the behavior, can affect environmental behaviors (e.g., Schultz, 1999). In the present study, we examined the hypothesis that observing the electricity-saving behaviors in public spaces serve as descriptive norms. The total number of valid responses was 610. The results showed that experience of electricity saving in public spaces and perceived others' behavior affected the subjects' electricity-saving behavior. The changes in one's values, seriousness perception of energy issues, experience of planned blackouts and the perception of the shortage of electricity supply also affected electricity-saving behaviors. The current study confirmed that descriptive norms impact on electricity-saving behaviors, even when the electricity supply is limited after a disaster. The effectiveness of electricity saving in public spaces on electricity-saving behaviors was discussed.

  • Refereed, ASIAN JOURNAL OF SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, WILEY-BLACKWELL, Transmitting pro-environmental behaviours to the next generation: A comparison between Germany and Japan, Kaori Ando; Kayo Yorifuji; Susumu Ohnuma; Ellen Matthies; Ayumi Kanbara, The present study examined the processes by which children acquire pro-environmental behaviours in different cultures. Our focus was on parental influence. Several studies have been conducted on adults' environmental behaviours; however, we know little about how children's environmental attitudes and behaviours are formed. We conducted a questionnaire survey with elementary school children and one of their parents in Germany and Japan. Two hundred and twenty-one pairs participated in Germany and 365 in Japan. The results of structural equation modelling showed that parents' behaviours affected children's environmental behaviours directly and also via the subjective norm (the children's experienced expectations of their parents). A comparison of the two countries revealed that hypothesized cultural differences between the impact of personal norms and subjective norms were clearer for adults. The results also showed that the effects of subjective norms were stronger for children, indicating that children are more likely to be influenced by expectations of others. The results of the study suggest that for promoting children's environmental behaviours, showing the behaviours in daily life would be most effective., Jun. 2015, 18, 2, 134, 144, Scientific journal, 10.1111/ajsp.12078
  • Refereed, ENVIRONMENT AND BEHAVIOR, SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC, Cross-Cultural Evidence for Spatial Bias in Beliefs About the Severity of Environmental Problems, P. Wesley Schultz; Taciano L. Milfont; Randie C. Chance; Giuseppe Tronu; Silvia Luis; Kaori Ando; Faiz Rasool; Pamela Linera Roose; Charles Adedayo Ogunbode; Juana Castro; Valdiney V. Gouveia, Prior research has shown a tendency for environmental problems to be rated as more severe at the global level than at the local level. The present article reports reanalyses of a large cross-cultural data set (Study 1: k = 22, N = 3,277) and new cross-cultural data (Study 2: k = 8, N = 1,131) examining the prevalence of this spatial bias in the rated severity of environmental problems along with analyses of individual and country-level predictors of this bias. Results from multilevel modeling analyses showed that spatial bias was greater for happier and younger individuals and for those from smaller communities. We interpret these results as evidence for self-serving and "place-serving" biases in which the bias tempers the severity of environmental problems in one's local area. Considering the large cross-cultural evidence, we argue that spatial bias is a plausible candidate of a psychological universal identified by research in environmental psychology., Apr. 2014, 46, 3, 267, 302, Scientific journal, 10.1177/0013916512458579

Bloebaum; A. Matthies; E. & Sugiura, The current study explored the determinants of individual and collective pro-environmental behaviors in Germany and Japan. A self report questionnaire was sent to two random sample respondents by mail in Cologne, Germany (N=996) and Nagoya, Japan (N=531). Hierarchical regression analyses demonstrated an interaction between country of respondent and both individual and collective behaviors. For individual behavior, subjective norms played an important role in Japan where interpersonal relationship is emphasized, whereas perceived behavioral control played an important role in Germany. Social factors, such as the amount of network and subjective norms, affected collective pro-environmental behaviors in both samples. The results highlighted the importance ofsocial factors in studies of collective pro-environmental behaviors., 2010, 38, 5, 21, 32
  • Refereed, EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, JOHN WILEY & SONS LTD, Identification as an organizational anchor: How identification and job satisfaction combine to predict turnover intention, Georgina Randsley De Moura; Dominic Abrams; Carina Retter; Sigridur Gunnarsdottir; Kaori Ando, The article examines the role of organizational identification and job satisfaction in relation to turnover intentions in seven organizations. Two models are proposed in which either job satisfaction or organizational identification was treated as a mediator of the other's relationship with turnover intention. The organizations varied in terms of culture (Japan vs. UK), and institutional domain (academic, business, health, mail, legal). Within each organization, and meta-analytically combined across the seven samples (N=1392), organizational identification, mediated the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intention more than job satisfaction mediated the relationship between organizational identification, and turnover intention. Organizational identification also had the larger overall relationship with turnover intention. This pattern remained true when gender, age, type of organization, culture, and length of tenure were accounted for, although the direct relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intention was stronger in private than public organizations and when the ratio of men was higher. The findings are consistent with a social identity theory (SIT) perspective and with the idea that identification is a more proximal predictor of turnover intention.. Over and above job satisfaction, organizational identification offers a sting psychological anchor that discourages turnover intention ill a range of organizational contexts. • Refereed, ASIAN JOURNAL OF SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, BLACKWELL PUBLISHING, Comparing normative influences as determinants of environmentally conscious behaviours between the USA and Japan, Kaori Ando; Susumu Ohnuma; Edward C. Chang, The present study explored the influences of subjective and descriptive norms on environmentally conscious behaviours between the USA and Japan. It was predicted that subjective norms would have a larger effect on behaviour in Japan than in the USA. Descriptive norms were expected to have a greater influence on behaviour in the USA. The survey was done with 160 American students and 114 Japanese students. The results showed that subjective norms are relevant only in Japan, but the effect was limited. Alternatively, descriptive norms were a powerful determinant in the USA. It was also found that respondents asserted that they commit environmentally conscious behaviours more frequently than others, regardless of their country. The present research suggests that the role of subjective and descriptive norms may vary between cultures, and highlights a necessity for distinguishing between interpersonal and social norms., Sep. 2007, 10, 3, 171, 178, Scientific journal, 10.1111/j.1467-839X.2007.00223.x

A survey of 378 volunteer members was conducted in two cities in which the municipal administrations had introduced a new recycling system. Main results of the survey were the following. The commitment enhanced both individual empowerment and collective empowerment. The effect of commitment to volunteer activities on intention was mediated by the acquired empowerment. Collective empowerment (efficacy to community change) and individual empowerment (solidarity) were the main determinants of their intention to participate in further voluntary activities., 30 Sep. 2004, 15, 5, 398, 407, 10.3985/jswme.15.398

  • Refereed, Asian Journal of Social Psychology, Blackwell Publishing Ltd, Social identification and a solution to social dilemmas, Kaori Ando, The study explored whether cooperation could be promoted by identification with an in-group. A game was used to create two groups independent of each other. Thirty-six Japanese undergraduate students participated in the game, followed by a social dilemma game. Analysis revealed a two-factor structure of social identification: identification with the group and identification with its members. As predicted from social identity theory, subjects showed a significantly higher level of cooperation when the dilemma game was played with in-group members than with out-group members. Furthermore, identification with the group affected both in-group bias and cooperative behavior in the social dilemma game, but this effect was not found for identification with members., 1999, 2, 2, 227, 235, Scientific journal, 10.1111/1467-839X.00036

In both studies and in both countries, the authors expected and found that identification with the organization substantially and significantly predicted turnover intentions. Attitudes predicted intentions only in Study 2, and subjective norms significantly predicted intentions across both studies. The authors hypothesized that subjective norms would be a significantly stronger predictor of turnover intentions in a collectivist setting. This prediction was supported. • Refereed, THE JAPANESE JOURNAL OF EXPERIMENTAL SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, The Japanese Group Dynamics Association, Who hold higher risk perception and anxiety toward COVID-19? Focusing on gender, age and media exposure, Ando Kaori; Takehashi Hiroki; Umegaki Yusuke; Tanaka Rina, The present study examined the determinants of risk perception and anxiety toward COVID-19, which is a new threat for human beings. As determinants, we focused on the effects of gender, age, and media exposure. The present study was conducted online, which obtained 1555 valid responses. The results showed that women consistently perceived higher risk and had higher anxiety toward COVID-19. As for age groups, risk perception was higher in 60s, but there was no difference in anxiety, while estimations of the probability of infection was highest among 60s. Obtaining information from the television and online news was related with risk perception whilst obtaining information from SNS was related with anxiety. An optimism bias was also observed in the present study. The present study found that the risk perception of COVID-19 differs depending on gender and age. The results suggested that we should consider these differences in risk communication of COVID-19., 2022, 62, 1, 12, 24, 10.2130/jjesp.2102

  • Not Refereed, Japanese Journal of Social Psychology, The Japanese Society of Social Psychology, Determinants of turnover and willingness to exert efforts in environmental volunteer groups.(in Japanese), ANDO Kaori, This study focuses on those who participate in the environmental movement and explores factors which are necessary in order for them to stay, or to actively participate within it. The questionnaires were distributed at the annual meeting of an environmental volunteer group, Eco-League, and via mail to those members absent. Factors were categorized as collective benefits, which are related to the achievement of collective goal, and selective incentives, which affect only those who participated. The analysis of 206 questionnaires showed that organizational identification and subjective norm had a significant effect on intention to stay and willingness to exert efforts, while the perceived seriousness of environmental problems and the efficacy of the movement did not. The result indicated that selective incentives, rather than collective benefits had a stronger influence on behavioral intentions. An analysis of social network revealed that concern for environmental issues amongst friends increased participants' commitment to the movement and toward adopting environmentally-conscious behaviors., 1999, 15, 2, 90, 99, 10.14966/jssp.KJ00003724803

Study 1: We conducted international experiments in Japan, China and Germany to examine the effect of messages that recommend energy-saving products. The results revealed that although Japanese participants showed no differences between friend and company conditions, German participants showed higher intention to purchase the products in company condition than in friend condition. Study 2: We conducted the persuasion game in Japan, Hong Kong, and Germany in which participants persuaded others to take eco-friendly actions. The results showed that in all countries the behavioral intentions, descriptive norms, and subjective norms were higher after the game compared to those at the pre-game., kaken

  • Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), 2002, 2004, 14402048, An environmental psychological study of environmentally conscious behaviors in Japan and Germany, HIROSE Yukio; SUGIURA Junkichi; OHNUMA Susumu; ANDO Kaori, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Nagoya University, 11600000, 11600000, The purpose of our studies were to clarify the determinants of environmentally conscious behaviors and to examine the effect of citizen participation on social acceptance of environmental plan in Japan and Germany. We conducted analyses on the survey of environmentally conscious behaviors we conducted in 2003 with citizens in Nagoya and Cologne. The results on 3R behaviors revealed that personal norm affected behaviors in both countries while the effect of subjective norm and shame had relatively stronger effects in Japan. Ecological guilt was more relevant in Germany. The results indicated that Japanese are more likely to be affected by external norm. We also carried out focus group meeting in Japan and Germany as a follow-up study. Citizens in Nagoya and Cologne discussed the hindrances of pro-environmental 3R and transportation behaviors. Furthermore, we conducted a survey with students in Japan, Germany and Sweden on socialization of transportation behaviors. The results of this survey will be used to analyze the influence of parents and society which were not included in the main survey. We also conducted analyses on the survey of social acceptance of environmental plan we conducted 2003 with citizens in Karlsruhe and Tsushima. The results of this survey revealed the citizens in both countries evaluated their city plans of environmental management not only from the aspect of expected outcomes of the plan, but also from the aspect of perceived fairness of the participatory method. The perceived procedural fairness consisted of two factors as information disclosure & access to discourse, and representative participant., kaken
  • Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), 2002, 2003, 14310064, Applied social psychological research on the formation process of volunteer networks in environmental problems, FUJIHARA Takehiro; ANDO Kaori; NONAMI Hiroshi, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Kwansei Gakuin University, 5200000, 5200000, The purpose of this research was to investigate the influence of networks on the systematization of a volunteer group, and to investigate how these networks affect the member's behavior and attitudes. In order to examine the former purpose, leaders and founders of volunteer groups were asked what kinds of network they had used from the stage of group foundation until the present. The interview survey revealed that intimate relationship among individuals was important at the stage of formation. Next, at the stage of development, it was found that existing loose network and new network were used. It became clear that volunteer groups used the various networks depending on each process of the organization. Next, to investigate the relation between networks and the behavior and attitude of the group member, questionnaire survey was conducted for the volunteer groups' members. Consequently, it was revealed that strong ties were an important factor for volunteers' behaviors and attitudes as indicated by the correlations between inter-group strong ties and most sub-items of the volunteers' behavior and attitudes, as well as from the correlations of the inter-group strong ties with expansion behavior. On the other hand, intra or inter-group weak ties were significantly correlated with only a few variables. As mentioned above, it became clear that group members decided their attitudes and behaviors in response to the influence of each networks., kaken
  • Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 2000, 2002, 12680567, An environmental psychological research of networking and empowerment of the environmental volunteers., HIROSE Yukio; HIROSE Yukio, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Nagoya University, 2800000, 2800000, The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of volunteers' networking and empowerment on their participatory intentions of the waste management program. Main results were as follows. We conducted the first survey research for investigating how fair and competent the residents, who had already participated in voluntary recycling activities, evaluated a new collection system of strict separation between recyclable and non-recyclable materials in Nagoya city. Main results were that they evaluated both of the effectiveness and fairness of the new system more positively than the other residents who had not participated in voluntary recycling activities. The second survey focused on volunteer members who had participated in the recycling activities and clarified promoting factors of their commitment to the citizen participation in the waste management program. The results indicate that the friendship network and prior experiences of recycling activities had a significant effect on the volunteer's empowerment. The volunteer's empowerment consists three factors of self-efficacy, solidarity, and social effectiveness. The more they perceived their empowerment, the more they were willing to participate in the waste management program. Our surveys clarified that networking by environmental volunteer group are main determinants of both of volunteer's empowerment and commitment to the environmental activities., kaken

Firstly, we conducted the questionnaire survey at mother’s class at the quantitative phase in order to investigate health service use and selection of the medical institution by age. Secondly, we designed subsequent qualitative study by using the results from the initial quantitative study. We interviewed health professionals to identify the problems associated with advanced maternal age in Japan at the qualitative phase in order to identify the problems of pregnancy and childbirth with advanced maternal age. We observed a clear increasing trend in pregnancy and childbirth among women over 40 years of age in recent decades in Japan. With weakening of community bonds, mothers find childbirth and child-rearing to be a burden., kaken
