  • Refereed, Japanese Sociological Review, The Japan Sociological Society, Life Course as Medium: Reconstruction of Niklas Luhmann’s Educational System Theory, YASUDA Takashi, The objective of this paper is to examine the modification of Niklas Luhmann's education system theory and to take the first step toward its reconstruction. Luhmann once considered the "child" to be the medium of the education system, but late in his life he abandoned this view and substituted "life course" as the medium. By this redefinition he meant the following : in an age where mass media greatly increased the comparability of life course, "life course" as a medium conveys the significance of knowledge imparted to the individual in the education system, thereby fulfilling its function as, literally, a medium of communication.
On reflection, Luhmann's previous formulation that the medium of the education system is the "child" and that it does not possess a binary code should also be reconsidered. Luhmann thought that binary code exists in the selection process of the education system, but that it does not apply to the medium of education, that is, the "child" itself. However, not only is this idea not in accordance with the fact that it is impossible to educate without selection in Luhmann's sense, namely, evaluation in general, it also logically contradicts his general social system theory. Therefore, it is more appropriate to say that "life course" is the medium of the education system, and like the media of other functional systems, it also possesses a binary code, that is, a "promotive/preventive" code in the formation of the life course of the educated., Sep. 2002, 53, 2, 2-18, 163, 10.4057/jsr.53.2_2
  • Refereed, Soshioroji (Sociology), SHAKAIGAKU KENKYUKAI, Typological Analysis on the Culture of Elite Middle Schools in Japan, YASUDA Takashi; Yoshikazu INOUE; Takashi YASUDA, The purpose of this paper is to analyze the process of, and condition for, the creation of cultural types in elite middle schools in Japan. We approached the problem by constructing an artificial "space" of elite middle schools from many samples collected by the questionnaires given to Kyoto University freshman in 2000, and then analyzed the data mainly by three types of school: public, private-inside-promotion ( I ) and private-halfway-admission ( U ). What has been demonstrated in this analysis is that the cultural gap between private schools is greater than that between public and private. By comparison with students in private group II , private type I students have parents that are better educated and take more active interest in cultural activities such as reading and hobbies. As success-minded newcomers, students of private type II devote themselves to preparing for the entrance examination. On the other hand, the members of public group are more social-minded and have more attachment to their own school than those of the private school groups. Based on these results, we can define a new conceptualization of three types of culture : "superior" (yutosei), "versatile" (shumijin) and "grinder" (jukensei). This provides us with a valid framework for both static-structural and historical-dynamic analyses, as follows. In the Showa 40s (1965-74) of popularized competition, high-ranking schools were spotlighted and added to prestige. They maintained a comparatively culturalminded tendency that had already been declining in college. During this period, we can find two historical prototypes for cultural typology. The envelopment-model is the form of the old era, where virtually all members were of the idealized versatile type.Differentiation-model is the first form of the new era, where all the versatile differentiated themselves from the emergent realistic grinder. But they share certain similarities in the tacit pressure of ignoring any competition for entrance examination. This envelopment / differentiation mechanism is likely to operate at the present six year private schools. It is the reason why there are many versatile students but they have ambivalent attitudes toward their own school., May 2002, 47, 1, 73-89, 89, 10.14959/soshioroji.47.1_73

  • Refereed, JAPANESE JOURNAL OF PSYCHOLOGY, JAPAN PSYCHOL ASSOC, INSTANTIATION EFFECT IN SINGLE SENTENCE COMPREHENSION, T YASUDA, This study aimed at investigating whether or not any instances are instantiated (or inferred) from the category in a single sentence when the sentence was comprehended. One hundred and twelve students read 75 pairs of sentences, where the first sentence included a category term and the second sentence included a term of its instance. The comprehension times for the second sentences were measured. It was found that the context of the first sentences, which had instantiating information, affected the comprehension times on the condition where the first sentence and the second were in anaphoric relation, but such context effect was not observed on the condition where the second sentence was independent of the first. This result showed that neither instantiation nor inference of instances occurred in comprehending single sentences and that the context effect could be explained by the degree of difficulty in integrating the information of both sentences at the time of comprehending the second sentences., Aug. 1993, 64, 3, 206, 214, Scientific journal

On foreign countries (Public School in Britain, Preparatory Classes to Grands Ecoles in France, Gymnasium in Germany, Prep Schools in America), we tried field surveys to make clear the whole situation of the elite middle schools in each social structure and education system, and to analyze the actual circumstances of educational practice and selection process. 2. On Elite Middle Schools in Japan, we tried three approaches to prewar old-style middle schools and postwar new-style high schools. (1) Analyzing the circumstances of entrance and dropout, and the factors of course differentiation Kobe secondary school in Meiji later period, by using school register, report card and school magazine. (2) Making clear the creation process of local-public "Tradition Schools" (a prestige paradigm), by surveying admission to prewar First High School and postwar Tokyo University ("Ichi-ko, To-dai"). (3) Giving a questionnaire to Kyoto University first year students, analyzing the cultural types of elite middle school, presenting a frame for analyzing cultural change after latter 1960s in Japan., kaken
