Although the average propagation rate of chemical wave v was 3.56 mm min-1 in the gels without nanosheets, the propagation was retarded in the gels with 1 wt % of nanosheets: v = 1.89 mm min-1 and v = 1.33 mm min-1 along the direction parallel and perpendicular to the nanosheet planes, respectively. Thus, the wave propagation is anisotropic with the anisotropy ratio v-/v = 1.42 in these gels and the periodic patterns formed by the BZ reaction were concentric ellipses, different from circles seen in isotropic gels. Furthermore, the propagation rate and degree of anisotropy were controllable by nanosheet concentration. These phenomena can be explained that the diffusion of molecules inside the gel is effectively hindered along the direction perpendicular to the nanosheet planes due to the very large aspect ratio of the aligned nanosheets. Multilayer organic electroluminescent (EL) devices using the new polymers as the hole-transport layer and quinacridone-doped tn's(8-quinolinolato)aluminum as the emitting layer exhibited high performance. One of the hole-transporting polymers functioned well as a hole injection buffer layer in organic EL devices. New green- and orange-emitting pendant polymers with high Tgs and desired ambipolar character were also designed and synthesized. Organic EL devices using these emitting polymers also exhibited good performance. Refereed, Langmuir, AMER CHEMICAL SOC, Surface friction of hydrogels with well-defined polyelectrolyte brushes, Yutaka Ohsedo; Rikiya Takashina; Jian Ping Gong; Yoshihito Osada, Hydrogels of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) with well-defined polyelectrolyte brushes of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PNaSS) of various molecular weights were synthesized, keeping the distance between the polymer brushes constant at ca. 20 nm. The effect of polyelectrolyte brush length on the sliding friction against a glass plate, an electrorepulsive solid substrate, was investigated in water in a velocity range of 7.5 x 10(-5) to 7.5 x 10(-2) m/s. It is found that the presence of polymer brush can dramatically reduce the friction when the polymer brushes are short. With an increase in the length of the polymer brush, this drag reduction effect only works at a low sliding velocity, and the gel with long polymer brushes even shows a higher friction than that of a normal network gel at a high sliding velocity. The anodic oxidation of these polymers in the presence of tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate as a supporting electrolyte produced radical-cation salts of pendant oligothiophenes with ClO4- as a dopant. The electrochemically oxidized polymers had partially crosslinked structures resulting from the coupling reaction of pendant oligothiophene radical cations, the extent of crosslinking significantly decreasing with the increasing conjugation length of the pendant oligothiophenes. Comparative spectroelectrochemical studies of the monomers in solution and the polymers as solid films showed that π-dimer formation of oligothiophene radical cations took place more readily for the polymer films than for the monomers in solution. These new vinyl polymers form smooth amorphous films with high glass-transition temperatures of ca. 200 degreesC. PVBAB and PVFAB possess electron-donating properties, and PVPhAMB-1T possesses bipolar character with both electron-donating and accepting properties, exhibiting strong fluorescence in solution and as films. Organic electroluminescent devices using PVBAB or PVFAB as a hole-transport layer and N,N'-dimethylquinacridone-doped tris(8-quinolinolato)aluminum as an emitting layer were thermally stable and exhibited very high performance. The gel swells in high pH solution, which is associated with the dissociation and, hence, electrostatic repulsion of the AA units and the pH value at which the swelling starts increases with increasing AA3T composition. The dissociation of the gels is suppressed, presumably due to the incorporation of the hydrophobic AA3T unit, and, once started, the dissociation could be promoted by AA3T in the low pH region. Poly(AA3T-co-AA) copolymers and gels can be easily electrochemically and chemically doped. Refereed, Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics, WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH, Crystalline structure and thermal behavior of water-soluble copolymers with pendant terthiophenes, Li Chen; Tatsuo Kaneko; Jian Ping Gong; Yoshihito Osada; Yutaka Ohsedo; Yasuhiko Shirota, The water-soluble copolymers having pendant terthiophene, poly(AA3T-co-AA), were synthesized by radical copolymerization of [(2,2': 5', 2"-terthiophen-5-yl)methyl acrylate] (AA3T) and acrylic acid (AA), and their molecular structures and thermal behaviors were studied, X-ray diffraction study showed that the copolymers containing a certain amount of AA3T can form the crystals with monolayer structure, while incorporation of too many AA units into the copolymers disrupted this structure. A polymer-gel electrolyte composed of poly(methylmethacrylate), lithium perchlorate, and propylene carbonate was sandwiched between two indium-tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrates, on one of which a film of poly(MA3T-co-MAEO) was coated. The device was found to undergo a color change from yellowish-orange to pale green and vice versa on electrochemical oxidation and reduction. The response times for green coloration and decoloration of a poly(MA3Tco-MAEO) 60/40 film in the presence of the polymer-gel electrolyte were estimated to be 5.3 and 5.5 s, respectively. The electrochemically-doped polymers, which were obtained as deeply-colored, lustrous films on the surface of the working electrode, were identified as radical-cation salts of pendant oligothiophenes with ClO4- as a dopant, having a partially-cross-linked structure due to the coupling reaction of the radical cation of the pendant oligothiophene moiety. The electrical conductivity of these electrochemically-doped polymers increased with increasing conjugation length of the pendant oligothiophenes; the polymer containing the pendant sexithiophene group exhibited a room-temperature conductivity of ca. 10(-4) S cm(-1) with an activation energy of 0.25 eV. Refereed, Gels, MDPI AG, Polymeric Hydrogelator-Based Molecular Gels Containing Polyaniline/Phosphoric Acid Systems, Yutaka Ohsedo; Mayumi Sasaki, To expand the range of applications of hydrogels, researchers are interested in developing novel molecular hydrogel materials that have affinities for the living body and the ability to mediate electrical signals. In this study, a simple mixing method for creating a novel composite molecular gel is employed, which combines a hydrophilic conductive polymer, a polyaniline/phosphoric acid complex, and a polymer hydrogelator as a matrix. The composite hydrogel showed an improved gel-forming ability; more effective mechanical properties, with an increased strain value at the sol–gel transition point compared to the single system, which may be sufficient for paintable gel; and a better electrochemical response, due to the electrically conducting polyaniline component.
