As the length-controllable rod, stiff biopolymer microtubule is used, which was successfully polymerized/depolymerized from tubulin proteins through a biochemical process even in the presence of the nanosheets.   • Refereed, JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY B, American Chemical Society, Anisotropic Self-Oscillating Reaction in Liquid Crystalline Nanosheet Hydrogels, Morio Shintate; Takumi Inadomi; Shinya Yamamoto; Yusuke Kuboyama; Yutaka Ohsedo; Takashi Arimura; Tomoka Nakazumi; Yusuke Hara; Nobuyoshi Miyamoto, Anisotropic chemical wave propagation of self-oscillating Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction was demonstrated in the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gel films embedded with macroscopically aligned liquid crystalline inorganic nanosheets. Although the average propagation rate of chemical wave v was 3.56 mm min-1 in the gels without nanosheets, the propagation was retarded in the gels with 1 wt % of nanosheets: v = 1.89 mm min-1 and v = 1.33 mm min-1 along the direction parallel and perpendicular to the nanosheet planes, respectively. Thus, the wave propagation is anisotropic with the anisotropy ratio v-/v = 1.42 in these gels and the periodic patterns formed by the BZ reaction were concentric ellipses, different from circles seen in isotropic gels. Furthermore, the propagation rate and degree of anisotropy were controllable by nanosheet concentration. These phenomena can be explained that the diffusion of molecules inside the gel is effectively hindered along the direction perpendicular to the nanosheet planes due to the very large aspect ratio of the aligned nanosheets.   • Refereed, ROYAL SOCIETY OPEN SCIENCE, ROYAL SOC, New composite thixotropic hydrogel composed of a polymer hydrogelator and a nanosheet, Yutaka Ohsedo; Masashi Oono; Kowichiro Saruhashi; Hisayuki Watanabe; Nobuyoshi Miyamoto, A composite gel composed of a water-soluble aromatic polyamide hydrogelator and the nanosheet Laponite (R), a synthetic layered silicate, was produced and found to exhibit thixotropic behaviour. Whereas the composite gel contains the gelator at the same concentration as the molecular gel made by the gelator only, the composite gel becomes a softer thixotropic gel compared to the molecular gel made by the gelator only.   • Refereed, Dyes and Pigments, ELSEVIER SCI LTD, A new family of light-emissive symmetric squarylium dyes in the solid state, Yutaka Ohsedo; Kowichiro Saruhashi; Hisayuki Watanabe, High-intensity light emission was observed from symmetric squarylium dyes bearing diaryl amine moieties in the solid state unlike typical squarylium analogues. The enhanced light emission in the solid state may be ascribed to the propeller-like dye architectures, which sterically hinder the intermolecular pi-pi interactions rather than the intramolecular charge transfer. Furthermore, oil gels derived from mixtures of BAm and EAm exhibited thixotropic properties although the same property was absent in the oil gels prepared separately using each alkylamide. The thixotropic behaviour of a two-component mixed gel was evaluated using a rheometer quantitatively. We also found that the obtained two-component oil gel can be formulated for use as a vehicle for sustained drug release. We found that both squarylium monoalkylamides and dialkylamides formed organogels in DMF. With a three-component alkylamide system, the transparency and mechanical properties (toughness and stimulus-responsiveness) of the resulting organogels were enhanced.   • Refereed, Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, SPIE-INT SOC OPTICAL ENGINEERING, Hole-transporting and emitting pendant polymers for organic electroluminescent devices, Hiroshi Kageyama; Daisuke Mutaguchi; Keisuke Hashimoto; Daisuke Nagamatsu; Masatake Tanaka; Kenji Okumoto; Yutaka Ohsedo; Yasuhiko Shirota, New hole-transporting pendant polymers with high glass-transition temperatures (Tgs) above 200 degrees C were designed and synthesized. Multilayer organic electroluminescent (EL) devices using the new polymers as the hole-transport layer and quinacridone-doped tn's(8-quinolinolato)aluminum as the emitting layer exhibited high performance. One of the hole-transporting polymers functioned well as a hole injection buffer layer in organic EL devices. New green- and orange-emitting pendant polymers with high Tgs and desired ambipolar character were also designed and synthesized. Organic EL devices using these emitting polymers also exhibited good performance.   • Refereed, Langmuir, AMER CHEMICAL SOC, Surface friction of hydrogels with well-defined polyelectrolyte brushes, Yutaka Ohsedo; Rikiya Takashina; Jian Ping Gong; Yoshihito Osada, Hydrogels of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) with well-defined polyelectrolyte brushes of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PNaSS) of various molecular weights were synthesized, keeping the distance between the polymer brushes constant at ca. 20 nm. The effect of polyelectrolyte brush length on the sliding friction against a glass plate, an electrorepulsive solid substrate, was investigated in water in a velocity range of 7.5 x 10(-5) to 7.5 x 10(-2) m/s. It is found that the presence of polymer brush can dramatically reduce the friction when the polymer brushes are short. With an increase in the length of the polymer brush, this drag reduction effect only works at a low sliding velocity, and the gel with long polymer brushes even shows a higher friction than that of a normal network gel at a high sliding velocity.   • Refereed, Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics, WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH, Study on Doping Behaviors of Vinyl Hydrogels with Pendant Terthiophenes, Li Chen; Jian Ping Gong; Yutaka Ohsedo; Yoshihito Osada, The water-swollen poly(AA3T-co-NaSS) and poly(AA3T-co-PEG) gels were synthesized by radical copolymerization of the monomer, [(2,2:5',2"-terthiophen-5-yl)methyl acrylate] (AA3T), containing pendant terthiophenes as an electron-conducting material with a soluble monomer, sodium p-styrenesulfonate (NaSS), or oligo(ethylene glycol) (PEG); their swelling, spectral, and doping behaviors were investigated. The degree of swelling of the poly(AA3T-co-PEG) gel was independent of the pH, whereas that of poly(AA3T-co-NaSS) gel increases abruptly below pH 3, which suggests self-doping between the AA3T and NaSS groups. The self-doping is not suppressed by cross-linking.   • Refereed, Journal of Polymer Science, Part B: Polymer Physics, Synthesis and electrochromic properties of a new family of methacrylate polymers containing pendant oligothiophenes, Yutaka Ohsedo; Ichiro Imae; Yasuhiko Shirota, A new family of methacrylate polymers containing pendant terthiophene, quaterthiophene, quinquethiophene, and sexithiophene was synthesized by the radical polymerization of the corresponding methacrylate monomers, and the electrochemical and electrochromic properties were investigated. The anodic oxidation of these polymers in the presence of tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate as a supporting electrolyte produced radical-cation salts of pendant oligothiophenes with ClO4- as a dopant. The electrochemically oxidized polymers had partially crosslinked structures resulting from the coupling reaction of pendant oligothiophene radical cations, the extent of crosslinking significantly decreasing with the increasing conjugation length of the pendant oligothiophenes. Comparative spectroelectrochemical studies of the monomers in solution and the polymers as solid films showed that π-dimer formation of oligothiophene radical cations took place more readily for the polymer films than for the monomers in solution. These new vinyl polymers form smooth amorphous films with high glass-transition temperatures of ca. 200 degreesC. PVBAB and PVFAB possess electron-donating properties, and PVPhAMB-1T possesses bipolar character with both electron-donating and accepting properties, exhibiting strong fluorescence in solution and as films. Organic electroluminescent devices using PVBAB or PVFAB as a hole-transport layer and N,N'-dimethylquinacridone-doped tris(8-quinolinolato)aluminum as an emitting layer were thermally stable and exhibited very high performance. The gel swells in high pH solution, which is associated with the dissociation and, hence, electrostatic repulsion of the AA units and the pH value at which the swelling starts increases with increasing AA3T composition. The dissociation of the gels is suppressed, presumably due to the incorporation of the hydrophobic AA3T unit, and, once started, the dissociation could be promoted by AA3T in the low pH region. Poly(AA3T-co-AA) copolymers and gels can be easily electrochemically and chemically doped. A polymer-gel electrolyte composed of poly(methylmethacrylate), lithium perchlorate, and propylene carbonate was sandwiched between two indium-tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrates, on one of which a film of poly(MA3T-co-MAEO) was coated. The device was found to undergo a color change from yellowish-orange to pale green and vice versa on electrochemical oxidation and reduction.   • Refereed, Polymers for Advanced Technologies, WILEY, Low-molecular-weight organogelators as functional materials for oil spill remediation, Yutaka Ohsedo, Oil spills from tankers are one of the major types of man-made disasters that impact the marine environment, and they have been shown to have long-lasting effects. On prevention of the spread of oil through rapid cleanup of spills, low-molecular-weight organogelators have received much attention because of their ability to tune their properties through rational design. In this mini-review, I present a brief summary of studies focused on the remediation of oil spills via a chemical method, which involves the use of low-molecular-weight organogelators that form organogels with fuel oils or organic solvents. Moreover, recent attempts to create new improved molecular organogels composed of commercially available simple organogelators via a mixing induced enhancement method for solidifying oil are also discussed. In addition, polymer organogelators for oil spills are discussed in relation to low-molecular weight gelators.
