  • Refereed, 奈良女子大学スポーツ科学研究, 奈良女子大学スポーツ健康科学コース, The relationship between continuous bilateral hop and basic exercise ability among young children, 室采音; 高徳希; 大高千明; 藤原素子; 中田大貴, Continuous bilateral hop has been used to evaluate a person's agility by focusing on the movement time. In the present study, we examined the movement time as well as hopping pattern score on continuous bilateral hop, and investigated the relationship between continuous bilateral hop and basic motor ability (25-m sprint, tennis ball throwing and standing long jumping) among 131 young children aged 4 to 5 years. The movement time was significantly shorter in 5- than in 4-year-old children, but the hopping pattern score did not change with increasing age. The score was significantly higher in girls than in boys, while the movement time was significantly shorter in boys than in girls. Moreover, a significant correlation was observed between the movement time and basic motor ability (25-m sprint and standing long jumping), the score and basic motor ability (25-m sprint, tennis ball throwing and standing long jumping). These data suggest that continuous bilateral hop can be used as indexes for agility as well motor coordination in young children., 2020, 22, 1, 12, 21, Research institution

  • Refereed, Perceptual and Motor Skills, SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC, Relative Age Effect in Physical Fitness Among Elementary and Junior High School Students, Nakata H; Akido M; Naruse K; Fujiwara M, The present study investigated characteristics of the relative age effect (RAE) among a general sample of Japanese elementary and junior high school students. Japan applies a unique annual age-grouping by birthdates between April 1 and March 31 of the following year for sport and education. Anthropometric and physical fitness data were obtained from 3,610 Japanese students, including height, weight, the 50-m sprint, standing long jump, grip strength, bent-leg sit-ups, sit and reach, side steps, 20-m shuttle run, and ball throw. We examined RAE-related differences in these data using a one-way analysis of variance by comparing students with birthdates in the first (April-September) versus second (October-March of the following year) semesters. We observed a significant RAE for boys aged 7 to 15 years on both anthropometric and fitness data, but a significant RAE for girls was only evident for physical fitness tests among elementary school and not junior high school students. Thus, a significant RAE in anthropometry and physical fitness was evident in a general sample of school children, and there were RAE gender differences among adolescents., Oct. 2017, 124, 5, 900, 911, Scientific journal, 10.1177/0031512517722284
  • Refereed, Perceptual and Motor Skills, SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC, Control Strategies for Accurate Force Generation and Relaxation, Ohtaka C; Fujiwara M, Characteristics and motor strategies for force generation and force relaxation were examined using graded tasks during isometric force control. Ten female college students (M age=20.2 yr., SD=1.1) were instructed to accurately control the force of isometric elbow flexion using their right arm to match a target force level as quickly as possible. They performed: (1) a generation task, wherein they increased their force from 0% maximum voluntary force to 20% maximum voluntary force (0%-20%), 40% maximum voluntary force (0%-40%), or 60% maximum voluntary force (0%-60%) and (2) and a relaxation task, in which they decreased their force from 60% maximum voluntary force to 40% maximum voluntary force (60%-40%), 20% maximum voluntary force (60%-20%), or to 0% maximum voluntary force (60%-0%). Produced force parameters of point of accuracy (force level, error), quickness (reaction time, adjustment time, rate of force development), and strategy (force wave, rate of force development) were analyzed. Errors of force relaxation were all greater, and reaction times shorter, than those of force generation. Adjustment time depended on the magnitude of force and peak rates of force development and force relaxation differed. Controlled relaxation of force is more difficult with low magnitude of force control., Oct. 2016, 123, 2, 489, 507, Scientific journal, Control Strategies for Accurate Force Generation and Relaxation(PMS 2016).pdf, False, 10.1177/0031512516664778
  • Refereed, Taiikugaku kenkyu (Japan Journal of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences), Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences, Effect of switching the control direction on force control using isometric leg extension, Otaka Chiaki; Fujiwara Motoko, In this study, we investigated the effects of differing control processes on the duration of zero-velocity in force control and force level control accuracy and quickness using isometric leg contraction tasks. Eleven participants were instructed to adjust the target force from 20% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC: 20% task) or from 60%MVC (60% task) to 20%, 40%, or 60%MVC after relaxing completely. The participants were instructed to control their force as quickly and as accurately as possible on receiving a visual stimulus, and the force produced by the participants was recorded. We investigated the differences in the task (20% or 60%MVC) and target (20%, 40%, or 60%MVC) force levels. We found that the target force level in the 20% task was higher than during the other target force levels for both tasks. The duration of zero-velocity was longer during the 60% task than in the 20% task for all target force levels. Before and after the period of zero-velocity, relaxation and re-adjustment time were longer during the 60% task than during the 20% task for all target force levels. Furthermore, the re-adjustment time was longer in the 60% task than in the 20% task for all target force levels; re-adjustment time was also found increase successively for the 20%, 40% and 60% MVC target force levels. Therefore, our findings suggest that during control the slight magnitude, accurate control of the force was difficult, irrespective of the magnitude of the force before relaxing completely. Moreover, the duration of zero-velocity became longer with greater magnitudes of force before relaxing completely, which affected the quickness at which force control was achieved after switching the control direction.

  • Refereed, JJSP, Japanese Society of Sport Psychology, Diversity of the Role of Positive Thinking According to Individual Characteristics:A Triaxial Analysis of Objects of Attention, Tsutsui Kaori; Fujiwara Motoko, This research clarified the concrete contents of positive thinking and explored how positive thinking differs according to individual characteristics. Levels of trait anxiety and concerns about evaluation from others and the coaching environment, were defined as individual characteristics. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) for measuring trait anxiety was administered to a university male baseball team. Subsequently, one baseball player with high trait anxiety and one baseball player with low trait anxiety were interviewed. Semi-structured interviews focused on their thoughts during their baseball games and their individual characteristics. Interview data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed qualitatively. Positive thinking was classified according to eight patterns associated with the objects of attention, on 3 axes (emotional expression, body consciousness, and external concern), and the relationship between individual characteristics and positive thinking was considered. Greater trait anxiety and concern about evaluation from others seemed to indicate that self-control thinking contributed to performance. In contrast, when trait anxiety and concern about evaluation from others was lower, self-encouragement thinking was more likely to contribute to performance., 2014, 41, 2, 115, 130, 個人特性によるポジティブシンキングの役割の多様性(スポーツ心理学研究 2014).pdf, False, 10.4146/jjspopsy.2014-1404
  • Not Refereed, Journal of Motor Behavior, ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, Control of Arm Movements for Quick Change of Movement Direction, Nozomi Takatoku; Motoko Fujiwara, The authors investigated the control strategy for changing movement direction during arm movements by analyzing the changes in a triphasic electromyographic pattern. Subjects performed a 40 degrees flexion (basic) and a 40 degrees flexion-extension to return to the start position (return) under two conditions: performing a predetermined task (SF) and performing each task in response to a signal (ST). The results revealed the agonist burst for the return task under the ST condition resembled that of the basic task under the SF condition, and the antagonist burst increased after presenting the modification signal. In conclusion, the strategy for quick change of movement direction was to increase the antagonist burst by an additional command from the central nervous system without cancelling the planned movement., Jan. 2014, 46, 1, 25, 32, Scientific journal, 10.1080/00222895.2013.840554
  • Refereed, Perceptual and Motor Skills, Postural control during pushing movement with risk of forward perturbation, Rika Okai; Motoko Fujiwara, The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a forward bilateral pushing movement on postural control in a situation where known, unknown, and unpredictable perturbations may be induced. Participants stood upright and voluntarily pushed a handle with both hands. In the first task, the handle was free to be moved by the participant (perturbation movable task) and in the second task, the handle was locked (stationary task). For each task, body displacement and observed applied force were recorded. Anticipatory postural control adjustment plays a vital role in body stability however, in contrast to its role in maintaining stability, adjustment can generate a restricted voluntary movement because motor programming selects a postural control that gives priority to body stability over the target movement. © Perceptual & Motor Skills 2013., Jun. 2013, 116, 3, 969, 979, Scientific journal, 10.2466/26.22.PMS.116.3.969-979

  • Refereed, JOURNAL OF ELECTROMYOGRAPHY AND KINESIOLOGY, ELSEVIER SCI LTD, Muscle activity patterns during quick increase of movement amplitude in rapid elbow extensions, Nozomi Takatoku; Motoko Fujiwara, In this study, we investigated a motor strategy for increasing the amplitude of movement in rapid extensions at the elbow joint. This study focused on the changes in a triphasic electromyographic (EMG) pattern, i.e., the first agonist burst (AG1), the second agonist burst (AG2) and the antagonist burst (ANT), for increasing the amplitude of movement required after the initiation of movement. Subjects performed 40 degrees (Basic task) and 80 degrees of extension (Wide task). These tasks were performed under two conditions; performing a predetermined task (SF condition) and performing a task in response to a visual stimulus immediately after movement commencement (ST condition). Kinematic parameters and EMG activity from the agonist (triceps brachii) and the antagonist (biceps brachii) muscles were recorded. As a result, the onset latency of AG1 and AG2 and the duration of AG1 were longer under the ST condition than the SF condition. No difference was observed between the SF and ST condition with respect to ANT activity. It is concluded that the motor strategy for increasing the amplitude of movement after the initiation of movement was to control the movement velocity and the timing to stop movement by the coactivation duration of AG1 and ANT and to stop the desired position accurately by AG2 activity. • Refereed, Taiikugaku kenkyu (Japan Journal of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences), Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences, Muscle activity patterns during quick change in elbow extensions, Takatoku Nozomi; Fujiwara Motoko, In this study, we investigated a motor strategy for changing the amplitude or direction of movement during rapid extensions of the elbow joint. We focused on changes in the triphasic electromyographic (EMG) pattern, i.e. the first agonist burst (AG1), the second agonist burst (AG2) and the antagonist burst (ANT), in relation to changes in the amplitude and direction of movement required after the initiation of movement. Ten seated subjects extended the elbow 40 degrees in the Basic task and 80 degrees in the Wide task, and then returned to the starting position after reaching for a target in the Basic task (Return task). The tasks were performed under two conditions: while performing a predetermined task (SF condition), and while performing a task in response to a visual stimulus after movement commencement (ST-BW condition—the subject performed either the Basic task or the Wide task; ST-BR condition—the subject performed either the Basic task or the Return task). Kinematic and temporal parameters, and EMG activity from the agonist (triceps brachii) and the antagonist (biceps brachii) muscles were recorded. Comparing the Wide task with the Basic task, the onset latency of AG2 increased, and the duration in all bursts increased. In the ST-BW condition, the onset latency of AG1 and AG2 and the duration of AG1 increased compared with the SF condition. Comparing the Return task with the Basic task, the onset latency of ANT and AG2 increased. The duration of all bursts and the average EMG (a-EMG) of ANT in the Return task increased compared with the Basic task. There was no difference between the SF and ST-BR conditions. It is concluded that the motor strategy for changing the amplitude of initiated movement is to control the duration of AG1 depending on the amplitude of movement in order to change the timing to stop movement, and that the motor strategy for changing the direction of initiated movement is to increase the duration and amplitude of ANT in order to stop at the target and flex continuously., 2009, 54, 2, 293, 306, 10.5432/jjpehss.a540201
  • Refereed, Proceedings of the 7th World Congress of Perinatal Medicine, MEDIMOND PUBLISHING CO, Does general medical knowledge affect prevalence and severity of premenstrual syndrome in young Japanese women?, A Suetake; T Hosono; Y Sugita; M Yanase-Fujiwara; M Takada, It is generally known that the spread of medical knowledge promotes actions to improve health but this has not been well investigated for premenstrual syndrome (PMS). We investigated whether accumulation of general medical knowledge would affect the prevalence of PMS and the severity of physical and mental symptoms of PMS. We carried out questionnaire investigation about PMS with 402 female students. We divided the respondents into two groups; a group with medical knowledge (n=117) and a group without medical knowledge (n=285). Women with medical knowledge had a high prevalence ratio of PMS and severity of PMS symptoms, sought medical advice to relive severe PMS symptoms. Medical knowledge promotes not only the prevalence ratio of PMS and its severity but also the motivation for medical treatment of PMS., 2005, 407, 411, International conference proceedings

First, we measured tail temperature of freely moving rats at ambient temperatures (T-a) between 13 and 31 degreesC. Tail temperature of the low estrogen rats was higher than that of the replaced estrogen rats at T-a between 19 and 25 degreesC, indicating that the low estrogen rats exhibit more skin vasodilation than the replaced estrogen rats. There was no significant difference in oxygen consumption and core temperature between the two groups. Second, we analyzed heat-escape behaviors in a hot chamber where rats could obtain cold air by moving in and out of a reward area. The low estrogen rats kept Ta at a lower level than did the replaced estrogen rats. These results imply that the lack of estrogen facilitates heat dissipation both by skin vasodilation and by heat-escape behavior. • Refereed, Japanese Journal of Physiology, PHYSIOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, Hypothalamic region facilitating shivering in rats "jointly worked", Tanaka, M; Tonouchi, M; Hosono, T; Nagashima, K; Yanase-Fujiwara, M; Kanosue, K, Although the posterior part of the hypothalamus has long been considered important for thermoregulatory shivering, it is unknown whether the neurons there or the passing fibers are implicated in the response. Exposure of urethane-anesthetized rats to cold (15-21°C) elicits shivering. An injection of muscimol (0.5 mM), a GABAA receptor agonist, into the medial part of the hypothalamus, including the dorsomedial and posterior nuclei, suppressed the cold-induced shivering. This result suggests that neurons having an excitatory effect on shivering are in this region of the hypothalamus.

  • Refereed, JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY-LONDON, CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS, Effect of midbrain stimulations on thermoregulatory vasomotor responses in rats, YH Zhang; T Hosono; M YanaseFujiwara; XM Chen; K Kanosue, 1. Efferent projections eliciting vasodilatation when the preoptic area is warmed were investigated by monitoring tail vasomotor responses of ketamine-anaesthetized rats when brain areas mere stimulated electrically (0.2 mA, 200 mu s, 30 Hz) or with the excitatory amino acid D,L-homocysteic acid (1 mM, 0.3 mu l). 2. Both stimulations elicited vasodilatation when applied within a region extending from the most caudal part of the lateral hypothalamus to the ventrolateral periaqueductal grey mat ter (PAG) and the reticular formation ventrolateral to the PAG. 3. Vasodilatation elicited by preoptic warming was suppressed when either stimulation was applied within the rostral part of the ventral tegmental area (VTA). 4. Sustained vasodilatation was elicited by knife cuts caudal to the VTA, and vasodilatation elicited by preoptic warming was suppressed by cuts either rostral to the VTA or in the region including the FAG and the reticular formation ventrolateral to it. 5. These results, together with the results of earlier physiological and histological studies, suggest that warm-sensitive neurones in the preoptic area send excitatory signals to vasodilatative neurones in the caudal part of the lateral hypothalamus, ventrolateral PAG and reticular formation, and send inhibitory signals to vasoconstrictive neurones in the rostral part of the VTA., Aug. 1997, 503, 1, 177, 186, Scientific journal, 10.1111/j.1469-7793.1997.177bi.x
  • Refereed, BRAIN RESEARCH, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, Effect of gonadotropin releasing hormone on thermoregulatory vasomotor activity in ovariectomized female rats, T Hosono; M YanaseFujiwara; YH Zhang; XM Chen; Y Fukuda; Y Asaki; K Yamaji; K Kanosue, To investigate the effect of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) on thermoregulatory skin vasomotion, we injected GnRH into various brain regions in both anesthetized and unanesthetized ovariectomized female rats. Local warming of preoptic area (PO) elicited skin vasodilation in anesthetized rats, Injection of 2 mu g GnRH into the septal area lowered the threshold hypothalamic temperature for skin vasodilation at least for 2 h. Similar injections of 2 mu g GnRH into the lateral ventricle (LV) and PO were ineffective. Although this vasodilative effect was also obtained after the injection of 20 ng GnRH into the septal area, injections of 2 ng GnRH were without effect. Not only injections of 20 ng Antide, a potent GnRH antagonist, but also injections of the mixed solution of 20 ng GnRH and 20 ng Antide were also without effect. In unanesthetized and unrestrained rats at an ambient temperature of 17 degrees C, injections of 20 ng GnRH into the septal area elicited tail vasodilation lasting for 30 minutes, whereas vehicle injections were ineffective. Injections of 20 ng GnRH into LV and PO were also ineffective. These results indicate that GnRH can elicit thermoregulatory skin vasomotion by acting on GnRH receptors in the septal area, This thermoregulatory vasodilative effect of GnRH might be possibly related to the etiology of climacteric hot flush., Apr. 1997, 754, 1-2, 88, 94, Scientific journal, 10.1016/S0006-8993(97)00060-7
  • Refereed, JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY-LONDON, CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS, WARM AND COLD SIGNALS FROM THE PREOPTIC AREA - WHICH CONTRIBUTE MORE TO THE CONTROL OF SHIVERING IN RATS, YH ZHANG; M YANASEFUJIWARA; T HOSONO; K KANOSUE, 1. To find out whether the thermosensitive neurones in the preoptic area that control shivering are predominantly warm or cold sensitive, we tested the effects of injecting the excitatory amino acid L-glutamate at various sites in and adjacent to the preoptic area of anaesthetized rats shivering at ambient temperatures of 15-21 degrees C. 2. L-Glutamate injections (0.2 mM in 0.5-1.0 mu l), as well as preoptic warming and electrical stimulation, suppressed shivering, whereas central saline injections had no effect. Effective sites were restricted to the anterior part of the preoptic area, and a tenfold lower concentration of L-glutamate did not influence shivering. 3. Injections of procaine (0.2 M) into the sites where L-glutamate suppressed shivering did not affect strong shivering activity, but facilitated shivering in three out of seven cases when shivering was weak or absent at higher ambient temperatures (25-30 degrees C). 4. L-Glutamate injections, as well as preoptic warming and electrical stimulation, also elicited vasodilatation of the paw skin and the tail. Procaine elicited vasoconstriction when it was applied during vasodilatation induced by local preoptic warming. 5. These results indicate that the contribution of the preoptic area to the control of shivering and vasomotion is influenced more by signals from warm-sensitive neurones than by signals from cold-sensitive neurones., May 1995, 485, 1, 195, 202, Scientific journal

Hind paw shivering during unilateral POAH thermal stimulation was measured for rats in which the POAH had been midsagittally transected and for rats in which one side of the hypothalamus had been coronally transected just caudal to the POAH. In midsagittally transected rats, unilateral warming on either side of the POAH suppressed shivering equally on both sides of the body. In unilaterally transected rats, POAH warming on the transected side did not affect shivering, but warming the intact side suppressed shivering equally on both sides of the body. When a unilateral transection of only the lateral part of the hypothalamus included the medial forebrain bundle, the effect was the same as that of a unilateral transection of the whole hypothalamus. These results indicate that no information controlling shivering is exchanged between the left and right POAH and that efferent signals from the POAH, descending through the medial forebrain bundle, cross the midline somewhere below the hypothalamus to innervate both sides of the body equally., Jul. 1994, 267, 1, R275, R282, Scientific journal

  • Refereed, AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY, AMER PHYSIOLOGICAL SOC, EFFECTS OF CENTRALLY AND SYSTEMICALLY ADMINISTERED INDOMETHACIN ON BODY-TEMPERATURE IN EXERCISING RATS, H TANAKA; M YANASEFUJIWARA; K KANOSUE, Subcutaneous and intracerebroventricular (icv) injections of indomethacin were used to test whether prostaglandin synthesis is essential for the exercise-induced increase in a rat's body temperature. At an air temperature of 24-degrees-C, male Wistar rats ran on a treadmill at 10-15 m/min 20 min after 300-mug icv injection or 60 min after 15-mg/kg sc injection of indomethacin or of control vehicle. The rectal temperature (T(re)) of control rats in 17 control experiments increased by 1.0-degrees-C during exercise, whereas the T(re) of the rats pretreated with intracerebroventricular indomethacin increased creased by only 0.4-degrees-C. Threshold T(re) for tail vasodilation was significantly lower in rats pretreated with indomethacin than the control rats (38.4 +/- 0.1 vs. 38.9 +/- 0.1-degrees-C), but O2 uptake did not differ between indomethacin-pretreated and control rats. Subcutaneous injection of indomethacin did not affect the body temperature, tail vasomotor activity, or O2 uptake of exercising rats. Intracerebroventricular indomethacin did not affect T(re) or tail vasomotor activity of rats resting at ambient temperatures of 24 and 28-degrees-C. Present results suggest that prostaglandin synthesis is required for the vasoconstrictive effect of exercise on skin blood vessels and thus for the exercise-induced elevation of body temperature., Jul. 1993, 265, 1, R230, R234, Scientific journal

Unilateral POAH warming produced vasodilation on both sides of the body, but vasodilation on the ipsilateral side always either occurred at a lower threshold hypothalamic temperature or was stronger than on the contralateral side. In a cold environment (5-degrees-C), shivering was suppressed simultaneously in both hind legs when one side of the POAH was warmed, and shivering reappeared simultaneously on both sides when POAH warming stopped. These results suggest that different thermoregulatory effectors are regulated in a different way by each side of the POAH. Unilateral thermal stimulation of the abdominal skin, on the other hand, affected vasomotor activity and shivering equally on both sides of the body, as previously reported for its influence on salivary secretion. Skin thermal signals from both sides of the body therefore seem to converge before they act on different thermoregulatory effector systems., Mar. 1991, 260, 3, R486, R493, Scientific journal

At neutral (24-degrees-C) and at hot (40-degrees-C) ambient temperatures (T(a)) salivary secretion from the submandibular gland of freely moving rats was recorded, together with simultaneous observation of saliva-spreading behaviour (grooming). 2. At a T(a) of 24-degrees-C, basal salivary flow was less than 2-mu-l/min. When rats were first placed in the experimental chamber, brief grooming bouts often occurred. Transient secretion at more than 10-mu-l/min was associated with this grooming, and the rate of salivary flow was positively correlated with the duration of grooming activity. 3. At a Ta of 40-degrees-C, grooming appeared frequently and salivary secretion at more than 20-mu-l/min continued even between grooming bouts. Threshold rectal temperatures (T(re)) for thermally induced grooming (38.2 +/- 0.2-degrees-C) and for salivary secretion (38.2 +/- 0.1-degrees-C) were similar, and for eleven of sixteen rats the two thresholds coincided. 4. At the threshold T(re) both the rate of salivary secretion and the duration of grooming increased in a stepwise fashion. Above the threshold, there was no correlation between the duration of grooming and the rate of salivary flow. 5. Thermally induced salivary secretion and grooming behaviour appear to be controlled by independent mechanisms., Jan. 1991, 432, 585, 592, Scientific journal

We compared some parameters in mesenteric and subcutaneous fats between sedentary and exercised rats (treadmill running; 10-20 m/min, 60 min/day, 7 days). Tissue weight and cell volume were decreased in mesenteric fat by the exercise. The exercise reduced activity and mRNA levels of acyl-CoA synthetase (ACS; 67 and 26% of those of the sedentary group, respectively), mRNA levels of lipoprotein lipase (LPL; 49% of those of the sedentary group), and GLUT-4 (38% of those of the sedentary group) in the mesenteric fat. In contrast, all of these parameters did not change significantly in the subcutaneous fat. Gastrocnemius muscle was heavier in exercised rats. ACS activity was elevated in the gastrocnemius muscle of the exercised rats (137% of those of sedentary group), although mRNA levels of ACS, LPL, and GLUT-4 did not change in the muscle by the exercise. These observations suggest that mesenteric fat may contribute to switching of distribution of plasma energy flux, including lipid and glucose, from fat tissue to muscle in physical exercise., Jul. 1993, 265, 1, E44, E50, Scientific journal

The participants were 52 children between 4 and 5 years old. The tasks were to catch a bouncing ball in the following two manners: One was a straight-line task. In this task, an experimenter dropped the ball from a height of about 1.6m from the floor at a point 2m in front of the participant. The other task was parabolic-line task. In this task, an experimenter threw the ball to a height of about 1.6m from the floor toward a drop point 2m in front of the participant. The participant was told to move forward 2m and catch the ball after the first bounce. The participants' catching movement was recorded from the right side by video cameras. As a result, the catching rate increased with age in both tasks. The parabolic-line task had a higher success rate than straight-line task. The catching movement-pattern was classified into six patterns: (1) no movement, (2) the ball bounced once and passed over the head, (3) the ball was caught after two bounces, (4) an attempt was made to catch the ball after one bounce, but the ball could not be touched, (5) an attempt was made to catch the ball after one bounce, but the ball was knocked away, and (6) the ball was caught after one bounce. In both tasks, the movement-pattern of 4 and 5-year-old children were classified into patterns 3 and 5. In the parabolic-line task, the movement-pattern of 5-year-old children were classified into patterns 4-5. Motion-pattern 6 was significantly increased from 4-year-old through 5-year-old children. All these results were compared to the results obtained in the previous study using same task without the distance was 1m between catching point and starting point of participant. Our results suggest that young children's ability to anticipate the track of the ball and estimate their own movements increased with age in both tasks. Foresee-movement is gradually developed along with age even if the pattern of catching movement is classified as failure-pattern., 2016, 18, 1, 12
  • Refereed, 奈良女子大学スポーツ科学研究, 奈良女子大学生活環境学部スポーツ健康科学コース, The motion characteristics of the forehand stroke on ball speed in tennis, 田中千尋; 大高千明; 藤原素子, The present study investigated the motion characteristics of the forehand stroke on ball speed in tennis. Participants were asked to hit a stopped ball straight ahead. We set three conditions: preferred, slow, and fast. In the preferred condition, the participants were instructed to hit the ball at a speed that was easy for the participant. In the slow and fast conditions, participants were instructed to hit the ball at their slowest possible speed and their fastest possible speed, respectively. The motion of each forehand stroke was recorded using three high-speed cameras, and ground reaction forces on the feet were measured separately using two force plates. Regardless of individual proficiency, all participants hit the ball while performing translational motion to the direction of the stroke. High skilled participants also hit the ball while performing rotational motion, whereas low skilled participants did not. Our results suggested that high skilled participants adjusted to the ball speed by changing the angular velocity of the trunk and by utilizing the ground reaction forces with kicking in the direction opposite of the stroke., 2016, 18, 13, 24

  • Not Refereed, Research journal of sport science in Nara Women's University, Nara Women's University, Planter pressrure during quick change of derections at initiation of running, Nozomi Takatoku; Motko Fujiwara, The purpose of this study was to investigate the movement during quick change of directions at initiation of running from plantar pressure of the first step. The subjects were instructed to run to the right (the no-change task) or to turn to the left (the change task) as rapidly as possible after the first stepping on the right foot in the direction of about diagonal 45 to the right. Both tasks performed in two conditions, the self-initiated (SF) condition in which the direction was instructed before the beginning of each trial and the visual stimulus (ST) condition presented the analyzed. The following results were obtained. The pressure of the heel (HL) and the forefoot-left (FF-L) in the change task increased compared to the no-change task. This showed that the subjects changed their running direction to increase the forward braking force in the heel and tha sideward propulsion in FF-L. In ST condition, the pressure of HL and the forefoot-right (FF-R) were greater, on the other side, the pressure of FF-L was smaller. And the duration to apply force on the whole of planta was longer than of SF condition. Moreover, in ST condition, a smaller pressure on the heel and the midfoot, and a longer duration of foot contact on the forefoot were related to quick change of directions. There results suggested how of foot of the first step to take for quick change of directions at initiation of running., 2006, 8, 19, 28

  • 奈良女子大学スポーツ科学研究, 奈良女子大学スポーツ科学教室, Muscle activity patterns during quick change of movement amplitude in rapid elbow flexions, 高徳 希; 高徳 希; 藤原 素子; 藤原 素子, ln this study, we investigated control of muscle activity for changing the amplitude of movement in rapid flexions at the elbow joint. This study focused on the changes in a triphasic electromyographic(EMG) pattern, i.e., the first agonist burst(AG1), the second agonist burst (AG2) and the antagonist burst (ANT), for increasing the amplitude of movement requires after the initiation of movement. Subjects performed 40 degree (Basic task) and 80 degree of flexion (Wide task). These tasks were performed under two conditions; performing a predetermined task (SF condition) and performing a task in response to a visual stimulus immediately after movement commencement (ST condition). Kinematic parameters (movement amplitude, movement velocity and movement time) and EMG activity (onset latency, duration and average EMG) from the agonist(biceps brachii) and the antagonist(triceps brachii) muscles were recorded. As a result, in both tasks, the onset latency of AG1, ANT and AG2 in the ST condition increased compared with those in the SF condition. In addition, the duration of ANT and AG2 and the a-EMG of AG2 increased in the ST condition. It is concluded that the control of muscle activity for changing the amplitude of movement in the ongoing movement was to control the onset and duration of ANT for changing the timing of stop movement and the duration and amplitude of AG2 for stopping the desired position accurately., 31 Mar. 2009, 11, 1, 11

In addition, to investigate the motor skill with muscle fatigue, we examined the interlocking of upper and lower limbs movements. The results of hyperthermia-induced central fatigue showed that the mode of exercise is capable of modulating the central motor command. Also, the peripheral fatigue affects the output of the central motor command, which is brain activity. Finally, "how to relax" due to muscle fatigue was numerically presented., kaken

There is almost no knowledge concerning thermoregulatory "network" , which makes it difficult to link electrophysiological and pharmachological data directly with responses observed in whole animals. Present study was planed to develop a system which analyzes the network by simultaneously recording activities of many neurons from hypothalamic culture preparation. Neurons taken from the preoptic area of new-born rats (three days old) were dissociated and cultrured. Neurons survived for 7-10 days and at around day 7 long processes were observed. In ordere to make optical recordings from single cultured neurons, we tried to find out conditions for making the neurons generate action potentials. No spontaneous activity was observed not only at 37゚Cbut also in a wide temperature range of 34-42゚C.Application of glutamate (1 mM-0.1 M) or K+ (10-100 mM) also failed to generate action potentials. Signal to noise ratio of the plesently-available optical recording system requires voltage change of several tens mV.So without action potentials optical recordings can not be used for analyzing neuronal networks of the hypothalamus., kaken
  • Grant-in-Aid for General Scientific Research (B), 1992, 1994, 04454143, Analysis of hypothalamic network for thermoregulation., KANOSUE Kazuyuki; FUJIWARA Motoko, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Osaka University, 6700000, 6700000, The body temperature is controlled by the central nervous system including the hypothalamus. There is almost no knowledge of thermoregulatory "network" , which makes it difficult to link electrophysiological and pharmachological data directly with thermoregulatory responses observed in whole animals. Present study was pland to answer this question. First, to examine how the control of shivering is shared between the brain's right and left sides, ketamine anesthetized rats had been implanted thermodes on both sides of the preoptic area and received unilateral transection of the hypothalamus just caudal to the anterior hypothalamus, which severed fibers running rosto-caudal diretion. Unilateral preoptic warming on the intact side produced bilateral suppression of cold-induced shivering without predominance of either side of the body but warming on the transected side had no effect on shivering. Therefore, no information seems to be exchanged between the left and right preoptic aera for control of shivering. When a partial transection covered the lateral part of the hypothalamus (the medial forebrain bundle), the transection had the same effect as did unilateral transections of the whole hyporhalamus. Efferent signals for shivering, thus, descend through the medial forebrain bundle. In the second experiment, skin vasodilation occurs bilaterally during unilateral thermal or electrical stimulation of the preoptic area (Kanosue et al., 1991). In rats which had received similar unilateral transection of the hypothalamus as in the shivering experiment, unilateral preoptic warming not only on the intact side but also on the transected side produced bilateral vasodilation on the hind paw. Therefore, information coutrolling thermoregulatory vasomotion--unlike that controlling shivering--crosses the midline within the preoptic area. Efferent fibers for vasomotor control seem to decend through the medial forebrain bundle., kaken

  • Grant-in-Aid for General Scientific Research (C), 1990, 1991, 02670066, Functional conections between right & left hypothalamus in thermcregulation., KANOSUE Kazuyuki; FUJISAWAR Motoko, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Osaka Univerisity, 2300000, 2300000, The present study explored the laterality of central nervous thermoregulatory control in anesthetized rats by measuring paw skin vasomotor activity and cold-induced shivering in hind leg muscles during unilateral POAH warming and electrical stimulation or during unilateral thermal stimulation of abdominal skin. Unilateral POAH warming produced vasodilation on both sides of the body, but vasodilation on the ipsilateral side always either occurred at a lower threshold hypothalamic temperature or was stronger than on the contralateral side. In a cold environment(5゚C), shivering was suppressed simultaneously in both hind legs when one side of the POAH was warmed, and shivering reappeared simultaneously on both sides when POAH warming stopped. These results suggest that different thermoregtilarory effectors are regulated in a different way by each side of the POAH. In the next series of experiments, the possibility of direct exchange of thermoregulatory control information between the left and right sides of the preoptic area and anterior hypothalamus(POAH)was tested by extracellularly recording single unit activity in the POAH of urethane-anaesthetized rats during local temperature changes and electrical stimulation of the contralateral POAH. Twenty-four of 123 neurons were facilitated and 20 inhibited by contralateral stimulation ; none were antidromically activated. Twenty-seven of the 82 of these neurons tested for thermosensitivity were warm-sensitive, and 20 were cold-sensitive : a neuron's thermosensitivity was not significantly correlated with its response to contralateral stimulation. The highest incidence of response to contralateral stimulation(60%)was found when stimulation and recording sites were both in the anterior half of the POAH. These responses were absent after midsagittal transection of the anterior commissure and its rostral area. These results indicate plentiful and predominantly polysynaptic connections between the right and left sides of the anterior POAH., kaken
